Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
Acquaforte, 1656 circa. [Click Below for Full Description]

In it he printed for the first time two essays on Chester written by William Smith and William Webb more than forty years earlier, as well as an essay on the Isle of Man by James Chaloner. CASATI, Paolo.
Very rare first edition of this work on the theory of machines and the nature of gravity by the young Jesuit Paolo Casati. A thesis presented viva voce at the Collegio Romano, the work imaginatively envisions a Latin dialogue, in two parts, between three great physicists of the preceding generation, all recently dead in the 1640s: Galileo; Marin Mersenne, his greatest champion outside of Italy, and Paul Guldin, the leading Jesuit physicist at the Collegio Romano during the same period. The first part is devoted to the comparison between the forces produced by various machines, involving cog wheels, ropes and pulleys. The second is devoted to gravity and the problem of lifting the earth using the machines described in the first part.

That a work sympathetic to Galileo, the arch rival of the Jesuits, should be printed in Rome, the intellectual capital of the Order, suggests that the power of Galileo's condemnation was already waning, and that in areas other than astronomy, public adherence to Galileian views was becoming increasingly acceptable. This work appeared in the same year as the first collected edition of Galileo's Opera (Bologna, Dozza, 1656-55).

The contemporary impact of the work is not known, but according to Thorndike (VIII.179), Casati was read by Robert Boyle. A second edition, adding three further dialogues, was published in 1658.

Casati (1617-1707) is an interesting and understudied figure in Jesuit intellectual life in the generation after Galileo. He is best known as the principal "handler" of Queen Cristina's highly politic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robertson, William, Master of Arts, from the University at Edinburgh, in Scotland and now residing, and teaching Hebrew in London
Printed for the author ; and are to be sold by H. Robinson, A. Cr. L. Fawn, London 1656 - A bi-lingual edition. Hebrew with English transliteration. The Hebrew is vocalized (has the point or vowels). Robertson, William. pp. [viii], 250, 22, [ii]. Trace foxed, slight loss in corner of last page, not affecting text. Modern full calf, gilt extra. 8vo. The author, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, was the leading Hebrew tutor in Cromwellian London, when learning Hebrew was all the rage. In spite of the grammatical error in the title, the book matches the Hebrew text of Psalms and Lamentations with an accurate Romanization, according to standard Sephardic pronunciation. Of special interest here is the author¿s six-page Epistle Dedicatory to his patron, John Sadler, constitutional lawyer, Member of Parliament, and Oliver Cromwell¿s private secretary and confidante. Sadler, John Harvard¿s brother-in-law, was one of the leading ideologues of the philo-Semitic Israelite-identifying party among the English Puritans. Robertson¿s career faded away after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, but finally, in 1680 he was appointed as a Hebrew instructor at Cambridge. SCANS available upon request. SANSON D'ABBEVILLE, Nicholas (1600-1667)
Paris: Pierre Mariette, 1656. NICHOLAS SANSON'S IMPORTANT MAP OF CANADA AND THE GREAT LAKES Paper Size: 17 3/4" x 22 3/4"; plate size: 16" x 21 3/8" Copperplate engraving with original color Nicholas Sanson was born in Abeville, a town in the Picardy region of France, in the year 1600. As a young adult he was a fervent historian, focusing his studies particularly on the ancient world. Many have hypothesized that he turned to cartography simply as a way of illustrating his work on ancient history. Whatever his motivations for pursuing a career in map publication, Nicolas Sanson was undoubtedly the most celebrated French cartographer of his time, even being appointed by Louis XIV as his private geography tutor under the title of Geographe Ordinaire du Roi. Sanson single-handedly sparked a renaissance in French geography which had not been a major player on the international cartographic stage since the great Orontius Finaeus in the 16th century. This caused the center of cartographic innovation to shift from Holland to France. His work set the precedent for modern geography, with its focus on precision and attention to detail, discarding and declaring old trends of excessive decoration as irrelevant. He endowed all his maps with the most recent and up-to-date geographical information, as well as the finest and sharpest engraving of maps of the period. He produced his first map when he was 16 and published his first atlas in 1645. In the span of his career, he published some 300 maps, including two world atlases and a series of four octavo volumes with each devoted to one … [Click Below for Full Description]

[8], 112, 111 - 194 pp. Head- tailpieces. Decorative initial capital letters. 12mo: A - H^12 I^6. 5-3/4" x 3-1/4" Around 1650, Osborne left public service & moved to Oxford, where, for the "last eight years of his life he published a series of historical, political, and moral works, which were read widely during the Restoration and early 18th C. His thinking shows the influence of Hobbes, whose ‘great acquaintance’ he was (Brief Lives, 1.370)." Osborne is best known for his Advice to a Son, which made him somewhat a celebrity, and helped occasion Pepys' "fondly calling the author ‘my father Osborne’ and recording in his Diary that Sir William Petty listed the Advice with Browne's Religio Medici and Butler's Hudibras as the works ‘most esteemed and generally cried up for wit in the world’ (Pepys, Diary, 19 Oct 1661; 27 Jan 1664)." [ODNB]. Here in this work, Osborne reflects on the greatness of the Ottoman Empire, though Madan notes Osborne was taken to task for his section on Machiavel, for it greatly resembled a 1642 pamphlet entitled "The Atheistical Politician, or a Briefe Discourse concerning Ni. Baldassarre Bonifacio
Bruxelles: Johannis Mommartius, 1656 A good copy of the second edition of this extremely rare work. First printed in Venice in 1652. Baldassare Bonifacio was a professor among many other talents and this work is a cabinet of curiosities - gathering a wide range of stories and recollections - including tales from classical antiquity of women who had serpent lovers. In full leather binding with raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine and tooling to the boards. It has had an old leather repair relaying the tooled front board onto plain leather. It is clean, showing wear to top and bottom of spine and edges and with a broken front hinge and weak rear hinge, although the board is still attached. The contents are in superb condition given the age of the book. There is a biographical note written in ink in english on a preliminary and 2-3 signs of previous ownershiip. Some of the ink has run a little. With black and white illustrated title page; page of names - D Carolo Hovyne, Equiti Aurato; dedication from Joannes Mommartius; section about Bonifacio; chapter index; 591 pages of text; final page with motif of mythical beasts; 'Index Rerum, ,approbatio by P de Roeck; and engraved picture at the end headed 'Post tenebras spero lucem'.The pages are slightly browned and there is the odd brown spot but it is otherwise clean and sound. It is an unusual size - 23 cm high by 18.5 cm broad.

VISSCHER, NICOLAS JANSZ
Amsterdam:: Nicolas Jansz Visscher, 1656. Broadsheet (20 1/4 x 23 1/2 in.; 514 x 597). Second state of the map showing t' Fort Kasimier but not Philadelphia, handcolored in outline, cartouche and vignettes of an Indian settlement and animals fully handcolored; light toning, small split at bottom of center fold. LITERATURE AND REFERENCES Burden, The Mapping of America, no. 315; Deak, Picturing America, nos. 38 and 42; Pritchard & Taliaferro, Degrees of Latitude, no. 11 (2nd state); Stokes, Iconography of Manhattan Island, I:119-132, 146-148; Tooley, Mapping of America, p. 284 (2nd state) CATALOGUE NOTE Although this map, originally published in 1655, is largely derived from Jansson's map of 1651, it is extremely important for providing a view of Manhattan island. This is probably the second published view of New York (according to Burden), the first being that of Joost Hartgers in 1651. Stokes places the date of the view in the autumn of 1652 since the building on the far left was not constructed until April 1652. In addition, a wall was constructed for security in 1653 which does not appear in this view. The second state of the map is the earliest available to collectors, as the first state is of extreme rarity, with only three copies known. Improvements on the Jansson map included the addition of the Zuyder Zee below Cape Cod, Chesapeach became Chesapeack, and on Long Island sound Milfort and Ailfort became Strotfort and Milfort respectively. t'kocks Rack is added on the west bank of the Hudson River near Manhattan. The second state of the map was also the sour … [Click Below for Full Description]
