SANSON d'Abbeville, Nicolas (1600-67)
Paris: Chez Pierre Mariette Rue S. Jacque, 1656. Copper-engraved map, period hand colouring in outline. A lovely example of one of the most important and influential maps of Canada ever devised. This very rare map is the most geographically progressive portrayal of Canada made during the mid-17th century, and was not superseded until Guillaume De L'Isle's 1703 map. While it bases many of its features on Sanson's watershed map of the continent, Amerique Septentrionale (1650), it is more advanced than it in key respects. Importantly, it is the first map to depict "L. Erie ou Du Chat" in a recognizable form. This designation was derived from Jean Boisseau, who in 1643 named the body of water after the local native name "Derie," which referred to the panther like qualities of their warriors. Sanson benefited from having received a copy of The Jesuit Relations , published in Paris in 1649, a detailed account by French missionaries who had traveled in the region. Most notably, this included Father Paul Ragueneau's account of his visit to Niagara Falls and Jean Nicollet's discovery of Lake Michigan, "Lac des Puans," in 1634. Down the St. Lawrence River from the lakes, Montréal is named, the settlement having been founded by the Sieur de Maisonneuve in 1642. Elsewhere, to the north, a mysterious strait weaves over "New South Wales" on Hudson's Bay, terminating in the interior of the continent, a blank space labeled as "Mer Glaciale". This alludes to the existence of a much hoped-for Northwest Passage. Also, on the western shore of the same sea is "Nouveau Danemarcq," referring to t … [Click Below for Full Description]

1656 - Incisione in rame. 50 x 60 cm. Acquarellatura probabilmente d'epoca. Proveniente da " 't Nieuw Groot Straets-Boeck, door Anthoni Jacobsz. 't Amstelredam, 1656". Ottime condizioni.Copper engraving. 50 x 60 cm. Watercolored. Come from: 't Nieuw Groot Straets-Boeck, door Anthoni Jacobsz. 't Amstelredam, 1656. JACOBSZ ANTHONIE (THEUNIS) (1606-50). Anthonie Jacobsz founded a printing and publishing business in Amsterdam in which he specialized in the production of pilot books and sea atlases. As he died at a comparatively early age most of the numerous editions of his works appeared after his death published by his sons, Jacob and Caspar, who took the name 'Lootsman' (sea pilot) to distinguish them from another printer of the name Jacobsz. Following Blaeu and Colom, Anthonie Jacobsz was the most important compiler of sea charts in Amsterdam in the first half of the seventeenth century. In his new ZeeSpiegel issued in 1643 he increased the number of charts normally included in these books and enlarged them to folio size, which evidently prov … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bookplate of Ethel Mary Portal.ESTC R208904; Wing F947. The Banqueting House is the only remaining complete building of Whitehall Palace, the monarch's principal residence from 1530 until 1698 when it was destroyed by fire. Designed by Inigo Jones, its primary function was to host occasions of state, masques and plays, and it was the most prestigious reception room in the Palace. John Finet, as master of ceremonies to both King James and King Charles, records many of these events, including visits by French, Swedish and Venetian ambassadors and the ratification of the marriage of King Charles I to Henrietta Maria in 1625. It is written with the informality of an insider's knowledge, part gossip, part a record of the elaborate etiquette that surrounded such state events.

COLES (William)
London: Printed by J. G. Nath. Brook, 1656. First edition, first issue, 2 parts in one, 12mo, [24], 175, [1]pp., signatures: A⁸(A1+a4) B-H¹² I⁴ (four leaves (a4), consisting of a dedication to Ellis Ashmole and a list of errata, inserted between A1 and A2), minor professional repairs to margins of several leaves, some light staining but otherwise text quite clean, new marbled endpapers, recent full calf, blind-stamp tool to both covers, red morocco title label. William Coles (1626-62), his enthusiasm for botany developed while he was at Oxford; he afterwards resided at Putney, Surrey, where he was a friend of Dr William How, founder of the Westminster botanic garden, and according to Wood (Athenae oxoienses), "he became the most famous simpler or herbalist of his time." As the Hunt catalogue notes, publication of this book was personally disastrous for Coles. Parts of the work formed a sustained attack on Nicholas Culpeper's astrological tendencies. However, in his haste to find a patron Coles had dedicated the book to Elias Ashmole, who unbeknownst to Coles was himself an astrologist. "This necessitated the removal of the most offending leaves in the dedication and the text, and Coles fairly leaned over backward in his attempt to win the favour Ashmole. However, the damage had been done, the new dedication still contained material that might easily have distressed Ashmole, and it seems clear that he must have refused permission for the use of his name." The present copy is the rare first issue, with the offending text and dedication present. Provenance: Manuscri … [Click Below for Full Description]
