Reynolds (Edward)
For Robert Bostock, 1656. KATHERINE BLOUNT'S COPY, with her inscription 'Given me by Sr. Thomas = Pope Blount, July ye 10th, 1696' on the front free endpaper and another inscription on the verso of the same leaf 'Omne sulit punctum qui miscuit utile Dulci', title within double ruled borders and lightly soiled, occasional damp-staining, pp. [18], 553, small 4to, contemporary sheep, flat spine, later red morocco label with gilt lettering, worn at head and upper joint with tear at foot, cracked but still strong, good. The author of this treatise, which was first published in 1640 was known as one of the leading moderates of the time. He was also Bishop of Norwich and had close connections with Oxford, having matriculated at Merton. In August 1646 Reynolds was one of the preachers sent to Oxford by parliament to prepare the way for reform of the university, and in May 1647 he was appointed one of the visitors to the university. On 12 April 1648 he was made DD, vice-chancellor, and dean of Christ Church. The work is inscribed as having been given by Sir Thomas Pope Blount, First Baronet, writer and politician, who died in 1697, possibly to one of his nine daughters. The quotation, also in a contemporary hand, is from Horace's 'Ars Poetica' and translates: 'He wins every hand who mingles profit with pleasure, by delighting and instructing the reader at the same time'. Sheppard's Epitome marked a significant change in the nature of abridgments. Unlike other examples, which are collections of notes of cases and statutes arranged loosely under headings and sub- headings, Sheppard's is comprised of entries on all branches of the law. Dedicated to Oliver Cromwell, the Epitome is divided into 170 chapters and arranged alphabetically from "Acceptance" to "Words." It was inspired, at least in part, to the reforming spirit of the Commonwealth. Notable works that followed Sheppard's example, and went on to inspire the modern legal encyclopedia, are Bacon's Abridgement and Comyn's Digest. JEAN CHRYSOSTOME (saint).
Parisiis Sumptibus Antonii Bertier 1656 1Parisiis, Sumptibus Antonii Bertier, 1656. "The Lettres provinciales (Provincial letters) are a series of eighteen letters written by French philosopher and theologian Blaise Pascal under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte. Written in the midst of the formulary controversy between the Jansenists and the Jesuits, they are a defense of the Jansenist Antoine Arnauld from Port-Royal-des-Champs, a friend of Pascal who in 1656 was condemned by the Faculté de Théologie at the Sorbonne in Paris for views that were claimed to be heretical. The First letter is dated January 23, 1656 and the Eighteenth March 24, 1657. A fragmentary Nineteenth letter is frequently included with the other eighteen. In these letters, Pascal humorously attacked casuistry, a rhetorical method often used by Jesuit theologians, and accused Jesuits of moral laxity. Being quickly forced underground while writing the Provincial Letters, Pascal pretended they were reports from a Parisian to a friend in the provinces, on the … [Click Below for Full Description]

The First letter is dated January 23, 1656 and the Eighteenth March 24, 1657. A fragmentary Nineteenth letter is frequently included with the other eighteen. [Subscription receipt for the Walton Polyglot Bible].
1656. 1f. Oblong 8vo (c. 240:84 mm). Blank form filled in in ink, with papered seal. Payment receipt for the fifth installment for one of the earliest works in British printing history published by subscription, according to Dibdin (I, 23) "the first book ever published in that manner in England": "Received this [10th] day of [June] in the year of our Lord God [1656] of [Jn. Gell Esq.] the summe of [two Pounds] being the [fourth] payment of [ten pounds] by him subscribed or promised, towards the printing of the Bible in the Original & other learned Languages: Witness my hand and seal, the day and the year above written". The Bible edition for which Gell was eventually to pay 10 pounds is the Polyglot Bible edited by Brian Walton (1660-61), "the most accurate and best equipped of the great Polyglots" (Darlow/Moule, 23). The Oxford-educated orientalist Walton drew up a scheme for the project as early as 1847: "[H]aving secured the approval of the Bishops of London, Ely, Salisbury, Rochester, Lincoln, and Exeter, in 1652 he invited subscriptions for the forthcoming Bible, and entrusted the funds to the management of a worthy London citizen, William Humble. This polyglot was one of the earliest publications printed by subscription in England" (ibid., 23f.). The "worthy London citizen" Humble, who administrated the subscription payments and in whose hand the present receipt is filled in, is in all likelihood the London bookseller of that name, whose shop "The White Horse" operated in Pope's Head Alley until 1659 (cf. Plomer, Dict. of booksellers & printers). - Printing commenced … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erpenius, Thomas.
1656. 4to. (12), 282 pp. Title printed in red and black with large engraving. (Bound with) II: Sennert, Andreas. Arabismus, h. e. praecepta arabicae linguae [...]. Wittenberg, Fincelius, 1666. (8), 166 pp. (Bound with) III: The same. [Mi'a Matal]. Centuria proverbiorum arabicorum. Ibid., 1658. (24) pp. Contemp. vellum with ms. title to spine. I: Third, most encompassing edition of the first scientific Arabic grammar written by a European scholar. Erpenius had published his "Grammatica Arabica" in 1613, having completed it four years earlier while staying in Paris with Casaubon. A second edition appeared in 1636 - edited by Anton Deusing, a pupil of Golius - adding the fables of Lokman and Arabic proverbs earlier edited by Erpenius. The present edition was edited by Golius himself, Erpenius's successor to the chair of Arabic. Repeating Deusing's 1636 edition, it now adds a modest Arabic chresthomathy previously edited by Golius's pupil Fabricius. This copy includes the cancel-slip for two lines of text and a catchword on f. *2v. Interleaved between pp. 200 and 201 with five ms. pages by a Swedish scholar (c. 1915). - II: Second edition of Sennert's Arabic grammar, followed by a concise Arabic dictionary. - III: Only edition of this rare collection of Arabic proverbs with their Latin translations, also prepared by the German scholar Sennert (1606-89), himself a pupil of Golius and in 1640 Jakob Weller's successor as professor of oriental languages in Wittenberg. - Somewhat browned due to paper, but well-preserved altogether. SANSON d'ABBEVILLE (Nicolas);
Paris Pierre Mariette 1656 398 x 540 mm.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Salvator ROSA (Napoli 1615 - Roma 1673)
Etching with touches of drypoint, signed in plate lower right. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, thin margins, in excellent condition. The Rosa has performed three prints of this type depicting the battle of newts, probably very congenial to his own way of interpreting the ancient heroic. It is clear in the artist the inspiration derived from the Battles of marine Gods by Andrea Mantegna, which also recreates the joyful spirit of pagan myth, and with similar compositions of Odoardo Fialetti. The works appear to have been made in the same period of Different figures, dating from between 1656 and 1658. Bartsch 12; Rotili 13; Wallace 93; Massari, Tra Mito ed Allegoria, p. 440, 166.
