He organized under the influence of Bishop Martinus of Tours a sort of monastic life on his own estate for himself and his friends. His extant works are a vita S. Martini Turonensis, 'which is an apology for ascetism'; and this Sacrae Historiae, a kind of universal chronicle to A.D. 402, 'which is an important source for the history of 4th-century events, (.). The whole book is an interesting attempt to present a 'breviarium' of history from the Christian point of view: it uses Christian chronographers, especially St. Jerome, but also Pagan writers. J. Bernays suggested that for the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D 70 Sulpicius followed the lost account of Tacitus. Sallust and Tacitus are his models in the matter of style'. (OCD, 2nd 3d. p. 983) After the text of the Sacrae Historiae follows the Continuation written by the humanist Johannes Sleidanus, 1507-1556, taken from his De quattuor summis imperiis. Leide: Jean Elsevier, 1656. 16mo. 611, plus tables. Rebound mid 19th C by Belz-Niedree of Paris. Red leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering. Tooled decoration along leather edges inside of covers. All edges of text are gilded. Marbled end leaves. A beautiful binding, alas for the detached bottom cover which is present and in good condition. Otherwise, gilded edges show a few light scratches. A few lines of text are lightly and neatly underlined, mostly seen in the first quarter of volume. Otherwise, this volume remains tight, clean, and intact. Charron goes on to integrate his own ideas of the anti-rational strand in Christianity (Thanks Wikipedia). Good. No Dust Jacket. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pierre Charron
Leiden: Elzevier, 1656. 12mo (13,2 x 7,4 cm). (24), 621, (12) pp, including frontispiece and typographic title. Contemporary overlapping vellum, joints with 5 thongs, covers with gilt-tooled coat of arms, spine with handwritten title and date. This philosophical work by Pierre Charron [1541-1603], theologian and as philosopher a disciple of his friend Montaigne, consists of three books. He develops in this work a system of moral philosophy, that was influenced by Montaigne's scepticism as well as by Lipsius' neostoicism. As such, he presents an orthodox catholicism, defending religious tolerance and separating religion from morality. With 6 headpieces, 2 endpieces, and 6 decorated woodcut initials. The work is dedicated by Jean Elzevier to Prince Maximilian de Bourgongne. Opposite the first page of the dedication a full-page engraved illustration of the Bourgongne's coat of arms. At the end the 12-page-index. Covers with (somewhat faded) gilt-tooled coat of arms of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet, a private society of Scottish sollicitors. Throughout the work printed marginal notes. Old hand-written ex-libris on flyleaf and library ticket on endpaper. Bit browned, dispersed brown stains, engraved frontispiece stained, but altogether a very good, well-kept and well-bound copy. For a full description and more images please visit www.zaalbooks.nl .

Salvator Rosa (1615-1673), italienischer Maler, Zeichner, Schauspieler und Dichter, eine der extravagantesten Künstlerpersönlichkeiten des Barockzeitalters
Rom: Salvator Rosa, 1656. Original-Kaltnadelradierung von Salvator Rosa (in der Platte mit seinen verschlungenen Anfangsbuchstaben "S" und "R" monogrammiert) auf rückseitig unbedrucktem dicken Büttenkarton, von alter Hand bis knapp an den Plattenrand beschnitten, Plattengröße ca. 14,5 x 9,2 cm, Kartongröße ca. 15,8 x 10,5 cm, rückseitig alte Montagereste (war gerahmt), sehr gut erhalten und extrem selten, museal - Copies of these small etchings with drypoint from the celebrated "Figurine series" of Salvator Rosa are extremely rare. A few pieces are in the possession of the Fine Art Museum of San Francisco, the Mueseum of Fine Art in Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Ringling State Art Museum of Florida. The figures in these small etchings - mostly soldiers, warriors, beggars, and bandits - are treated by the artist as "outlaw heroes that would fight againsts the regional powers". What makes them remarkable is that the figures "seem to be engaged in a story outside the frame", as Chris Jones of The Ringling Museum put it on the occasion of an exhibition "Bandits, Beauties and Beggars: The Etchings of Salvator Rosa" by The Ringling Museum of Art in August 2014. 2100 gr. VAIRASSE D'ALAIS, Denis.
- R. Davidson, A book collector's notes, p. 43; STCN (4 copies); Tiele, Land- en volkenkunde, pp. 111-112; cf. Landwehr, VOC 373 (the associated journal). Rare second Dutch edition of an extensively illustrated account of an imaginary voyage to western Australia, based on the story of the wreck of the VOC ship Vergulde Draeck in 1656, first published in French in 1676 (without illustrations) and in Dutch in 1682 (with illustrations), all three anonymously. Many of the illustrations may have been inspired by better known exotic lands, such as Southeast Asia, the East Indies, India and Iran, and some depict natives in Islamic turbans. Europeans still knew almost nothing about Australia when Vairasse first published his account and his wild stories caught the imagination of the public and went through many editions. They give a good picture of what was then known and/or surmised about these little-explored regions and may have generated more enthusiasm for voyages of exploration than the more sober factual accounts. The frontispiece shows 9 little images of fabulous creatures. Some may now seem comic but at the time they probably seemed more plausible than a kangaroo or a platypus. With the margins of a dozen leaves and the frontispiece tattered and restored, two leaves with a couple tears into the text repaired and another with the corner torn off (but preserved loose) affecting 3 words of a shoulder note. The other leaves and plates are in good condition. With the boards slightly bowed and dirty, but the binding still good. Fascinating stories of an imaginary voyage to Austra … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANSON NICOLAS
1656. Copper engraving, mm 410x535, engraved by Jean Somer, published by Pierre Mariette, Sanson's business partner.First state of Sanson's scarce map of China and Korea, first published in 1656. An important and sought after french map of China, northern part of the Philippines, Korea. It is based on a chinese map copied by Matteo Ricci, brought back to Rome in 1590 by Michele Ruggieri.Very interesting to note is the strange form of Korea, which was generally shown as an island in the 17th century; Sanson's depiction is also a cartographic improvement as he joins Korea to the mainland. The Great Wall closes the map in the north, a detailed explanation panel in bottom right corner. Good general condition, restored worm track in bottom margin slightly affecting the engraved border.Pastoureau, 10, pag. 402.

CHAPELAIN, Jean
Bel exemplaire. Tchemerzine II, 239. Brunet I, 1794. *****. In-folio. Collation : (52), 522, (12) pp. Vélin à rabats, dos orné, encadrements dorés sur les plats avec fer doré dans les angles. (Reliure de la fin du XIXe.).

Only edition of this important illustrated astronomical text, An attractive volume, well printed with scores of typographic diagrams and one folding plate. Seth Ward, English mathematician, autodidact, and astronomer, here expands upon Kepler's Second Law of Planetary Motion, one of three fundamental laws of astronomy and physics which is of threefold significance: 1). It describes elliptical orbits with the Sun at one of two foci; 2). Dictates equal areas and equal time intervals swept out by a rotating line segment, and 3). States that the square of the orbital period of a body is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis of its orbit. The Astronomia Geometrica was essentially Ward's second, and more complete, response to Ismail Boulliau's "Astronomia Philolaica" (Paris: 1645), in which Boulliau attempted to remove some of the notorious difficulties that Kepler's Second Law had presented to astronomers in the thirty-six years since its introduction to science. But Boulliau, in his work, only succeeded in making matters more confusing. He imagined cones of sorts, and pictured planets moving about ax … [Click Below for Full Description]
