Colom, Arnold
Colom's is one of the earliest obtainable Dutch Sea Charts to show the Sea Coasts of South America. The map shows the coastal features of South America south of the Equator, with a large inset of Central America.  The chart is executed in the Portolan style, with rhumblines and fine coastal detail for the time period. Arnold Colom was the son of Jacob Colom, a well-regarded Amsterdam bookseller, printer, and chart-maker. Colom produced two sea atlases, a guide and pilot for the Mediterranean and a general sea atlas of the World. Colom's Zee Atlas, published between 1654-58, was one of the largest format sea atlases of the 17th Century, with each chart printed from an oversized copper plate. Koeman describes the atlas as "One of the most important atlases in the well known category of Dutch sea-atlases". Apart from its rarity, the Zee-Atlas was of importance for its inclusion of the earliest Dutch sea chart of the New Netherlands to appear in an atlas (Jacob Theunisz Lootsman's chart is believed to pre-date it, but seems not to have been regularly published until later), while the "three charts of the oceans are on the same scale (1:14mill.) as Portuguese and Spanish charts of that time. It marked the first time that such charts were published as atlas sheets" (Koeman IV, p.115).

Only edition of this important illustrated astronomical text, An attractive volume, well printed with scores of typographic diagrams and one folding plate. Seth Ward, English mathematician, autodidact, and astronomer, here expands upon Kepler's Second Law of Planetary Motion, one of three fundamental laws of astronomy and physics which is of threefold significance: 1). It describes elliptical orbits with the Sun at one of two foci; 2). Dictates equal areas and equal time intervals swept out by a rotating line segment, and 3). States that the square of the orbital period of a body is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis of its orbit. The Astronomia Geometrica was essentially Ward's second, and more complete, response to Ismail Boulliau's "Astronomia Philolaica" (Paris: 1645), in which Boulliau attempted to remove some of the notorious difficulties that Kepler's Second Law had presented to astronomers in the thirty-six years since its introduction to science. But Boulliau, in his work, only succeeded in making matters more confusing. He i … [Click Below for Full Description]

"The Lettres provinciales (Provincial letters) are a series of eighteen letters written by French philosopher and theologian Blaise Pascal under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte. Written in the midst of the formulary controversy between the Jansenists and the Jesuits, they are a defense of the Jansenist Antoine Arnauld from Port-Royal-des-Champs, a friend of Pascal who in 1656 was condemned by the Faculté de Théologie at the Sorbonne in Paris for views that were claimed to be heretical. The First letter is dated January 23, 1656 and the Eighteenth March 24, 1657. A fragmentary Nineteenth letter is frequently included with the other eighteen. In these letters, Pascal humorously attacked casuistry, a rhetorical method often used by Jesuit theologians, and accused Jesuits of moral laxity. VAIRASSE D'ALAIS, Denis.
1656. R. Davidson, A book collector's notes, p. 43; Howgego, Invented narratives, V1; STCN (4 copies); Tiele, Bibl., pp. 111-112; cf. Friederich, pp. 20-22; Landwehr, VOC 373 (the associated journal). Rare second Dutch edition of an extensively illustrated account of an imaginary voyage based on the story of the VOC ship Vergulde Draeck that wrecked on the coast of western Australia on 28 April 1656. It was anonymously published by the French writer Denis Vairasse (ca. 1635-1700). Europeans still knew almost nothing about Australia when Vairasse first published his account and his wild stories caught the imagination of the public and went through many editions. They give a good picture of what was then known and/or surmised about these little-explored regions and may have generated more enthusiasm for voyages of exploration than the more sober factual accounts."In Vairasse's story, one of the boats sent out to seek help, returns with news of the discovery of a civilized country where its crew were imprisoned and then released by an armed force from Sporunde, a vassal state of the great kingdom called Sevarambia in the interior. The sporundeans, who speak Dutch and Spanish as a result of prior European encounter, take the crew to their city where they are welcomed in friendship. On the return of the boat, the survivors of the Dragon d'Or are then taken to Sporunde, from where [Captain] Siden and his companions proceed on a journey to Severambia" (Howgego). "With its emphasis on Deism, Reason, and the full dignity of man, the novel rejects most of what France had stood for fr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leiden: Elzevier, 1656. 24mo (11,1 x 5,5 cm). (16), 608 pp. Vellum, joints with 5 thongs, spine with (later) gilt-lettered morocco label. This work by Girolamo Cardano [1501-1576], the greatest mathematician of his time, on the secrets of political knowledge and worldly wisdom, was first published by the Elzeviers in 1627 as "Proxeneta seu de Prudentia civili" (Willems 272). The 1656-edition itself is an almost textual reprint of that of 1635. The work consists of 232 short chapters which are divided into 8 sections. After the dedication an 8-page table of contents. With the same engraved title page of the 1635-edition and likewise dated 1635, unsigned. Also with two woodcut illustrations, a headpiece, an endpiece and two 4- and 5-line decorated woodcut initials. Flyleaf with handwritten ex-libris of S Stevenson, 1779, and endpaper with the bookplate Thomas Clifford Allbutt, [1836-1925], an influential English physician. Salvator ROSA
Bibliografia: Bartsch 25/86; Wallace 6/87. Dimensioni circa 90x140. From the series of Figurine. Etching. A good impression , printed on contemporary laid paper, with small margins, in excellent condition. Bartsch 36 stato unico; Wallace 36 stato unico 90 140mm
