ROSA Salvatore
" - S.n. [Click Below for Full Description]

Socinus, Faustus.
no publisher/printer [Frans Kuyper & Daniel Bakkamude], 1656. Socinus, a jurist-theologian from Siena, first met with Polish Antitrinitarians in 1578. He moved to Krakow in 1580 and devoted the rest of his life to fostering a cohesive religious movement that denied the Holy Trinity based on rational exegesis of Scripture. While Socinianism and the Radical Reformation won many followers, Socinus (Fausto Sozzini, 1539-1604) was also attacked -- in writing and, in 1594 and 1598, on the street! => This is the second of volume of the only edition, first issue, of the first and most important collection of Socinian documents and the second volume of Socinus' Opera. The contents of this volume are: Contra Palaeologum de Magistratu; De Christo servatore, contra covetum; De Statu primi hominis ante lapsum; De natura Christi; and Contra theologicas collegii Posnaniensis (with seven subsection). Thes series in which this was published, Bibliotheca fratrum polonorum comprised ten tomes published clandestinely ca. 1665-92 by the Polish Brethren called Unitarians. The near-complete works of Socinus himself, leading that parade of texts, occupy these first two, which were actually published three years after vols. III-V (by Johann Crell and Jonasz Szlichtyng), all with => false imprints. Excerpts of Socinus's => acrid debates with protagonists of the Reformation on baptism, redemption, (im)mortality, and the nature of Christ pervade the present volume. The minister-turned-printer Kuyper (1629-91) produced only Socinian works in the decade 1663-73, many edited by Andreas Wissowatius … [Click Below for Full Description]

CORNEILLE (Pierre)
1656. 105708 CORNEILLE (Pierre). L'Imitation de Jésus-Christ. Traduite et paraphrasée en vers françois. A Paris, chez André Doubron, Libraire de la Reyne, 1656. in-4. Frontispice. 8 feuillets. 532 pages. 4 planches gravées. (24,5x18cm).

- London: for John Williams, 1656 Folio 330 x 224 mm a4, A-E4, F2, G-Y4, Aa-Nn4, Oo2, Pp-Zz4, [Aa]-[Ii]4, Ccc-Zzz4, [aaa]-[ggg]4, [hhh]2, ¦¦4, Aaa6, Bbb-Zzz4, [Aaa]-[Ggg]4, Aaaa-Zzzz4, (Aaaaa)-(Ggggg)4, (Hhhhh)2, aaaaa4, Aaaa-Xxxx4, Yyyy2, (6A)-(6C)4 (leaf (6C)4, blank), ¦4, ¦¦4, ¦¦¦2. First edition, second issue. This copy is bound in eighteenth-century, blind-ruled, English calf, recently re-backed. Internally, this copy is in excellent condition with wide margins and only occasional light soiling. An excellent copy. First edition of Fuller's monumental "Church History", which traces the development of Christianity and, by extension, the monarchy and English culture, from the first centuries A.D. to the execution of King Charles I. The epochal events are covered in great detail: the Norman Invasion, Wycliffe, Tyndale and the English Bible, the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the Schism with Rome. The reigns of Henry VIII, Mary Tudor, Queen Elizabeth, James I and Charles -all of which were marked by violent religious and social conflict- each occupy an entire book. Fuller's perspective is that of the antiquarian and his personal sensibilities are everywhere apparent. When discussing the 13th century Litchfield Cathedral, he demonstrates a strikingly modern understanding of the need for the preservation of architectural treasures. He writes: "Surely what Charles the fifth is said to have said of the Citie of Florence, that it is a pittie it should be seen save only on Holy-dayes; as also that it was fit that so faire a Citie should have a Case and Cover for it … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHAPELAIN, Jean
Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1656. ______ Format : In-folio. Bel exemplaire. Tchemerzine II, 239. Brunet I, 1794. *-------*.

Prynne, William
Edward Thomas in Green Arbor, London, 1656. 21 cm, [10] ,182 [recte 128] pp. early leather binding. " Above all, William Prynne, who had lost his ears for his virulence against the queen twenty years before, was prompted by what he saw and heard in the streets of London to compose what was to be one of the most effective pamphlets of the period, a monument of learning as well as acerbity: A short demurrer to the Jewes long discontinued barred remitter into England. Comprising, an exact chronological relation of their first admission into, their ill deportment, misdemeanors, condition, sufferings, oppressions, slaughters, plunders, by popular insurrections, and regal exactions in; and their total, final banishment by iudgment and edict of Parliament, out of England, never to return again: collected out of the best historians and records. With a brief collection of such English laws, Scriptures, Reasons, as seem strongly to plead, and conclude against their Readmission into England, especially at this season, and again the general calling of the Jewish Nation. With an Answer to the chief Allegations for their Introduction." (Cecil Roth: A History of the Jews in England. p.162.) "The DEMURRER is an important source for the study of medieval Anglo-Jewish history." (Encyclopedia Judaica) OCLC: 68199052. Bound with FOUR OTHER early pamphlets by William Prynne. A fine copy.
