['A Christian Arab'].
1654. Folio [32.5 x 22 cm]. (4), 12 pp; 62 pp, (2); 25 pp, (1), plus terminal blank. With 3 volvelles in first section, composed of 11 parts; and 7 volvelles in the second section, composed of 16 parts. Bound in contemporary velum with manuscript title on spine. Binding a little soiled, occasional light soiling or staining to margins, but overall a very pleasant copy with all volvelles intact. Early manuscript additions to printed predictions of the 'forbidden' volvelles on pp. 42-62 of the second section. 19th century ex-libris of the Baron du Taya on pastedown, with his manuscript notes on flyleaf and ownership inscription dated 1832 - "livre rare & très curieux". Very rare first edition, with all revolving discs or 'volvelles' complete and intact, of this remarkable treatise offering predictions for the destiny of European nations as well as the Islamic World into the 20th century. This first edition is sought-after because most copies were burned by the hangman at Nantes and Rennes shortly after publication; very few copies are thought to have survived. The treatise was deemed offensive due to the predictions of 5 volvelles in the second section, which offer horoscopes for Islam, Christianity, France, Spain, and England. The 'Figura Sectae Mahometanae' on p. 53 dares to give a horoscope of the Prophet Mohammed and a list of significant events in the history of Islam. This is followed by manuscript predictions for events from 1649 onwards - including the suggestion that a quarter of the world will be Islamic by 1703. The horoscope of Christianity also includes dire manus … [Click Below for Full Description]

Louis XIV
1654. A glimpse into the Age of Louis XIV at the apex of his power, signed by prominent royal, judicial and diplomatic figures Louis XIII had two children. His son Louis XIV, who came to be known as the glorious "Sun King," was crowned when just five years old. He was King for over 72 years, and remains the longest reigning monarch of a major European power. Louis XIV was the embodiment of the Divine Right of Kings. He strengthened and centralized the power of the monarch, and encouraged the loyalty of the nobles, bringing them closer and closer to the court at Versailles. Under his leadership France became the strongest power in Europe. It was also a time of the flourishing of arts and philosophy. The reign of Louis XIV has the same aura of a great, even romantic, flowering about it as that of Elizabeth I of England. The younger son of Louis XIII was Philippe, also called the Duke of Anjou, who greatly expanded his political domains, adding dukedoms and other offices, as well as growing the fortunes of the House of Orleans. At the coronation of Louis XIV in 1654, Philippe acted as dean, placing the crown of France on his brother's head. The two men had a heated argument one day in 1701 over family affairs. Philippe angrily returned early the same evening to dine with his son. He collapsed after suffering a fatal stroke. Louis XIV, upon hearing his only sibling had died, said "I cannot believe I will never see my brother again." A parlement (parliament) was a provincial appellate court in Ancien Régime France. The most important of them was by far the Parlement of Paris. … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Glisson, Francis
London : Typis Du-Gardianis, Impensis Octaviani Pullein, 1654, 8°, (48), 458, 14 pp., Holzschnitte, 2 gest. Taf., Ledereinband d.Zt.; Rücken erneuert. The "Anatomia hepatis" was the most important treatise thus far on the physiology of the digestive system. Rare First Edition of "Francisci Glissonii in inclyta Cantabrigiæ Academia medicinæ professoris publici & collegii Londinensis socii, Anatomia hepatis, cui praemittuntur quædam ad rem anatomicam universe spectantia : et ad calcem operis subjiciuntur nonnulla de lymphae-ductibus nuper repertis", the first book printed in England to present a detailed account of a single organ based on original research, and the most important book to date on the physiology of the digestive system! He used advanced anatomical methods, such as casts and injection of colored fluids, which enabled him to illustrate the vessels of the liver (portrayed in the two engraved plates). He described the passage of blood from the portal vein to the vena cava, and proved that lymph flows not to the liver, as was then believed, but from it, passing to the recently discovered capsula communis. "Educated at Cambridge, where he later served as Regius Professor of Physic, Glisson was part of the extraordinary ferment in medicine and the life sciences that occurred in the two English universities in the earlier seventeenth century. Like his influential colleague and friend, William Harvey, Glisson epitomized the English style of biological research: he was theoretically conservative and non-dogmatic; and at the same time he was committed to a rigorous progra … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pagitt, Ephraim
London: William Lee, 1654. Scarce early edition of this important book, first published in 1645, an early catalogue of, at best, variant Christianities, which were then rife in England; this edition is the first to include "the Quakers or Shakers, and the Ranters", though it is not clear who wrote these additions, as Pagitt died in 1647. Other sects described include the Anabaptists, Jesuits, Divorsers, Familists, Antinomians, Seekers, Adanites, Antisabbatarians, Arminians, Nestorians, Robinsonians, Traskites, many others. Later (mid 1800s?) binding, which has failed; the boards are both detached. Title pages (one engraved) both edgeworn, chipped, mended; missing at least one leaf of the 'Epistle Dedicatory': the extant text begins "themselves in holes; now lift up their heads, and vent openly their errors....". Based on an old review in Book-Lore, Volume 1 (1885) quoting some of the content, we believe the missing leaf to have contained a list of the heretic sects described and the dedication to the Lord Mayor et al.; the main body of text is intact. Generally edgeworn, chipped, some staining, paper tanned; close-trimmed, losing the margins of some of the marginal summaries; minor pencil marginalia; ink name (W. H. Daubney, once Vicar of Harlington, Bedfordshire, and Rector of Leasingham, Lincolnshire, author of at least one book) inside front cover. [14], [3]-150 (with some errors), [1], [6] page 'table' (index) + 5 pages publisher's ads. . Fifth Edition. Hard Cover. Poor. 5¾" by 7¾".

Moll Hermann (1654 - 1732) London
Artist: Moll Hermann (-1732) London; issued in: London; date: ca 1700 1654 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Perfect condition; size (in cm): 20 x 27,4; description: Map shows Saint Kitts, also known more formally as Saint Christopher Island, is an island in the West Indies. The west side of the island borders the Caribbean Sea, and the eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean. Saint Kitts and the neighbouring island of Nevis constitute one country: the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Around 1300, the Kalinago, or Carib people arrived on the islands. These war-like people quickly dispersed the Igneri, and forced them northwards to the Greater Antilles. They named Saint Kitts Liamuiga meaning fertile island, and would likely have expanded further north if not for the arrival of Europeans. A Spanish expedition under Christopher Columbus arrived and claimed the island for Spain in 1493. A short-lived French Huguenot settlement was established at Dieppe Bay in 1538.The first English colony was established in 1623, followed by a French colony in 1625. - vita of the artist: Hermann Moll (1654- 1732) London was a cartographer, engraver, and publisher.Moll produced his earliest maps from studying cartographers such as John Senex and Emanuel Bowen._ In the 1690s, Moll worked mainly as an engraver for Christopher Browne, Robert Morden and Lea, in whose business he was also involved.
