First published at Paris in 1651, this edition has the important De thoracicis lacteis dissertatio added. Written against Jean Riolan, the dissertatio is dedicated to Thomas Bartholin, who, on the basis of Pecquet's discoveries, was able to confirm and extend them to cover the entire lymphatic system.'Pecquet . engaged not in the "mute and frozen science" of cadaver anatomy, but in anatomia animata on dogs, cattle, pigs, and sheep. Using a dog that was digesting, he showed the following: 1. If the heart has been resected, pressure on the mesenteric root causes the chyle to spurt into the superior vena cava. 2. The chyle is directed toward the subclavian veins by two paravertebral canals that swell when their distal extremities are ligatured. 3. The origin of the ascending chyliferous ducts is situated in a prevertebral and subdiaphragmatic ampulla . 4. The posterior part of Aselli's pancreas is composed of lymphatic ganglia. 5. No mesenteric chyliferous vessel goes to the liver . and the interior vena cava, incised above the liver, reveals no trace of chyle. The human thoracic duct was rediscovered by Thomas Bartholin, Rudbeck, and Gayant. With Perrault and Gayant, Pecquet eventually observed the communications of the human thoracic du … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAROT, JEAN - "LE PETIT MAROT"
No place, No date, (Paris around 1654). 4to. (275 x 210 mm). Contemp. full mottled calf. Raised bands. Richly gilt spine. Titlelabel with gilt lettering. Corners neathly restored. 2 stamps on foot of titlepage (ouside engraving). With engraved ornamental title-page and 113 engravings on 107 (of 122 ??) sheets. Most of the plates signed (I. or J. or Ian, or Jean) Marot sculp. Wide-margined and internally clean. ¶ First edition of the so-called "Le Petit marot". There seems not to be any standard collation of the work as copies in libraries varies a lot in relation to the number of plates. (Lewine's Bibliography lists engr. title and 106 (sometimes 111) plates)."Little has survived of his own architectural work, but his engravings of the works of others, primarily those published in the volumes referred to as the Petit Marot (c. 1654) and the Grand Marot (c. 1670), were highly esteemed by his contemporaries and remain among the most important sources concerning architecture in France up to the early part of the reign of Louis XIV. Manuscript; Godolphin, John; Clerk(e), William
1654. Three Eminent Civilians Submit Their Opinion on an Admiralty Case [Manuscript]. Godolphin, John [1617-1678]. Clerk(e), William [d. 1655]. Cocke, Charles George [d. 1682]. [Legal Opinion Submitted to the Committee of Admiralty and Navy, Doctors' Commons, London, July 19, 1654]. Single leaf folded to form 11-1/2" x 7-3/4" bifolium with integral address leaf, franked on verso of second leaf. Light toning and soiling, vertical and horizontal fold lines, chip to bottom edge of second leaf with no loss to text, wax seal mostly intact. $1,750. * Godolphin, Clerk(e) and Cocke, three eminent civil lawyers and judges of the Court of Admiralty, were asked to resolve a salvage issue concerning the formerly Royalist ship Revenge, renamed the Marmaduke after its capture. In this opinion the judges declare that the ship "is by law the Commonwealths, neyther is shee within the Letter of the Law of Salvage, for a halfe part..." This letter is notable, in part, as an example of the various legal issues raised by the English Civil War. It is also interesting as an example of an English civil-law opinion, a counterpart to a European consilium. From the Year Books onward, court reporting provided ample documentation of the development of the common law, much of it judge-made. The parallel development of English civil law, much of rising from opinions such as our example, never enjoyed the same degree of documentation. Examples such as ours are valuable contributions to the history of English civil law.

REGIUS, Henricus.
Amsterdam: Elsevier, 1654. First edition (see below) of this rare and controversial work on physical, medical and natural philosophy from a Cartesian viewpoint. Among the wide variety of topics covered, there is a chapter on the circulation of the blood (p. 267 ff.), and also an interesting section on magnetism: "the illustrations [of magnets] are noteworthy, particularly the one on p. 207, which shows the lines of force around the magnet as well as the lines of induction through it" (Wheeler Gift). Regius (1598-1679) was a major figure in disputes over Cartesianism in Utrecht during the seventeenth century. He received a medical degree from the University of Padua before returning in 1638 to become a professor of medicine and botany at the University of Utrecht. A neighbour of one of Descartes' oldest Dutch friends, Renerius, Regius became intimate with Descartes, and an advocate of his views. When in the summer of 1641 a student of Regius' defended a Cartesian thesis, the new rector of the university, Gisbertius Voetius, became worried. When Regius defended a thesis in December that held that the unity of body and soul to be accidental rather than necessary, Descartes immediately recognized the danger and wrote to Regius that he had been misunderstood. But it was too late: a pamphlet war ensued and Descartes distanced himself from his old friend. In 1646 Regius published Fundamenta physics, in which he developed the Cartesian doctrine of matter and motion, including the theory of vortices. According to Regius' modern sounding definition, living bodies are those whose part … [Click Below for Full Description]

Michael Mayerus (a.k.a. Michael Mayer, Michael Maier)
Humphrey Moseley, London, 1654. This is the first English translation of a famous text originally published in Latin in Germany in 1616, which tells the story of various creatures and entities - a sheep, an oyster, a calf, a bee, a goose, a silkworm, flax, and Mercury - vying to prove their usefulness to Man (Mercury wins). It's a key Rosicrucian text, with Alchemy associations and is extremely rare. The book is in its original calf binding, which some chipping, scuffing and staining and such as might be expected of a book over 350 years old, corners are rubbed and the top and bottom portions of the banded spine are missing, the gilt borders remain on the covers, there is some neat, narrow tape repair with some glue between the ffep and pastedown, the text block is clean and the binding remains firm. Grading is commensurate with the age of the book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In 1646 he settled for a time in Hangzhou where he founded a new church and devoted himself to mission work. When the Manchus arrived he came under their protection" (Hostetler, p. 353.). Allaeus, Franciscus.
1654. Folio (235 x 360 mm). (4), 4, 12 pp. 57, (1) pp. 26 pp., terminal blank. With 1 engraved disc in the text of the first count (a repeat of disc 2 of the first volvelle), 3 volvelles in the first section, composed of 11 parts; and 2 volvelles in the second section, composed of 6 parts. Contemporary full vellum. Rare second, expurged edition of this remarkable treatise offering predictions for the destiny of European nations, issued without place or printer in the year of the almost unobtainable first edition, most copies of which were burned by the hangman at Nantes and Rennes shortly after publication. The first edition was deemed offensive due to the predictions of five volvelles in the second section which offered horoscopes for Islam, Christianity, France, Spain, and England. A "Figura Sectae Mahometanae" dared to give a horoscope of the Prophet Mohammed and a list of significant events in the history of Islam; this was followed by predictions which included the suggestion that a quarter of the world would be Islamic by 1703. The horoscope of Christianity also included dire predictions: indeed, those for the fate of England (ending with the wiping out of the English nation in 1884) caused a serious diplomatic rift, resulting in the English ambassador demanding the book be suppressed. The present edition of the "Astrologiae Nova Methodus" (and subsequent ones) omits the incriminated 7 pages and 5 volvelles; instead, it prefixes a new, two-page introduction entitled "Principiorum Astrologiae Brevis Expositio" ("The Principles of Astrology, Set Out in Brief"), which ex … [Click Below for Full Description]

Louis XIV
A glimpse into the Age of Louis XIV at the apex of his power, signed by prominent royal, judicial and diplomatic figures Louis XIII had two children. His son Louis XIV, who came to be known as the glorious "Sun King," was crowned when just five years old. He was King for over 72 years, and remains the longest reigning monarch of a major European power. Louis XIV was the embodiment of the Divine Right of Kings. He strengthened and centralized the power of the monarch, and encouraged the loyalty of the nobles, bringing them closer and closer to the court at Versailles. Under his leadership France became the strongest power in Europe. It was also a time of the flourishing of arts and philosophy. The reign of Louis XIV has the same aura of a great, even romantic, flowering about it as that of Elizabeth I of England. The younger son of Louis XIII was Philippe, also called the Duke of Anjou, who greatly expanded his political domains, adding dukedoms and other offices, as well as growing the fortunes of the House of Orleans. At the coronation of Louis XIV in 1654, Philippe acted as dean, placing the crown of France on his brother's head. The two men had a heated argument one day in 1701 over family affairs. Philippe angrily returned early the same evening to dine with his son. He collapsed after suffering a fatal stroke. Louis XIV, upon hearing his only sibling had died, said "I cannot believe I will never see my brother again." A parlement (parliament) was a provincial appellate court in Ancien Régime France.
