Autres biz … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Chrysostom
Thomas Dring. First edition, 16mo, pp. [10], 126, [6]; an excerpt from the homiletic writings of St. John Chrysostom, probably written during the time of his episcopate towards the end of the 4th century A.D., at the time when Theodosius was emperor of Constantinople, and Eudoxia his empress. Chrysostom was himself a native of Antioch, in Syria. This translation is dedicated to Sir Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Cleveland, and a prominent royalist general who was captured by Cromwell's forces in 1650; he narrowly escaped the death penalty, apparently on a technicality, and was instead imprisoned in the Tower until his release in 1656. The translator Viscount Grandison was a fellow prisoner, and presumably a supporter of Charles I as well. Wing C3980 records three copies only: British Library, Bodleian, and Keble College, Oxford. ESTC adds no others. Bound with: The certainty of heavenly, and the uncertainty of earthy treasures. Together with a discovery where the treasure and heart is placed. As it was delivered in severall sermons, by that eminently faithfull servant of Christ, Mr. William Strong, late minister at Winchester. London: printed by W. Wilson. .. and are to be sold by Francis Tyton, 1654. First edition, pp. [2], 204; title and text within ruled borders.Wing S5998. Edinburgh and Folger only in ESTC. COPAC adds a very imperfect copy at the BL. William Strong was a prominent independent divine; he was born at Durham and educated at Cambridge. In 1640 he became rector of Moore Critchell in Dorsetshire but he was driven out in 1643 when the royalists attained ascenda … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRANZ, Wolfgang
1654. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Wolfgang Franz was a German Lutheran theologian from the 16th-century who, curiously, composed a zoological treatise on the history of animals at the end of his career. Franz was known for his disputations and theological treatises and this book, on animals no less, is right in line with his important works of theology. 'Animalium Historia Sacra' was one of Franz's final published works in which he targeted theological students and priests with his discussions. The purpose of this book was to provide accurate information to preachers who sought to use parallels of wildlife and animals in their sermons. Instead of discussing the physical attributes of animals, Franz teaches on the moral, aesthetic, and miraculous qualities of animals. One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is Franz's insistence that the unicorn is a regularly occurring animal in nature. He supports his claims through scriptural references to what he considers to be the Bible's description of a unicorn. Other oddities include the existence of Dragons, rise of dead animals back to life, and the mysterious appearance of rats and mice on ships. [Attributes: First Edition]

"Imperii Sinarum Nova Descriptio" This attractive map of China includes Korea as a peninsula, Japan and Formosa. It was originally made by Joan Blaeu after Martino Martini.Martini was a Jesuit missionary who made the first atlas of China in 1654. This map was first published by Blaeu. Some of the plates of the Blaeu atlas were acquired by Covens (1697-1774 ) and Mortier ( 1722-1794 ). This map is from the Covens and Mortier edition which is rarer than the Blaeu edition. This map in original hand coloring was published ca 1695. One of the interesting features of the map is the Great Wall of China at the top of the map. The cartouche shows Chinese with various native fruits and flowers. This is a special map for collectors of Chinese and Asian maps and is historically interesting for historians of Asia. ANDRIES Jodocus S.J
1654. 52 almost full-page woodcuts by Jan Christoffel Jegher after Antonius Sallaert, Erasmus Quellinus and Abraham van Diepenbeeck, and Christiaan van Sichem with their monograms. 12mo. 119pp. 19th-century blue paper boards with a paper label on spine. A rare example from the first edition of this superbly illustrated devotional work. The collaboration between the Jesuit Andries, the designers Sallaert, Quellinus and van Diepenbeck, and the woodcutter Jegher follows their highly successful Perpetua Crux of 1649. Lehmann-Haupt comments on the present work, ?Each of the illustrations reflects the capacities of its designing artist. Jegher's cutting is skillful and to the point, with apt use of crosshatching; the ?Creation of the World? shows firm control of strong and fine lines.? He goes on to quote David Bland, A History of Book Illustration (p. 165), who says that the Necessaria ad Salutem Scientia ?is one of the most interesting [of popular works of devotion and emblem books]. At first sight it has the look of a little devotional book of the previous century, a Book of Hours, say. But on examination the cuts curiously reveal the influence of engraving not only on the technique of the woodcut but also on its style and very iconography. This book could not belong to any other period but that of the baroque and the counter-Reformation? An interesting feature of this edition is the explanation of the pricing of copies on p.15: ?Pretium libelli. Hic libellus quinque foliorum & quinquaginta duarum iconum, excusus papyro proba, densa, candida emitur apud Typographum in Albis du … [Click Below for Full Description]

His prose is succinct, without the elaborate rhetoric of authors -- such as Antoine de Nervèze -- from the previous generation. He also shows a vast knowledge of poetry. Camus's first works were strongly influenced by the Essays of Michel de Montaigne, albeit with more religious content. His spiritual works were directly inspired by Saint François de Sales; he was critical of mendicant orders and wrote extensively on poverty, grace and spiritual reflection. His fictional works encompass both novels and short stories. His dark and violent stories, often based on contemporary anecdotes or criminal incidents (he wrote over 1000 such works) were in the tradition of the horrific tales ("histoires tragiques") of Matteo Bandello, popular in France in the late Renaissance and early seventeenth … [Click Below for Full Description]

1654. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. IMPORTANT LAW King Charles I Coke Littleton etc " One of the most lawful ways whereby man in some sort may be said to revenge himself on the shortness of his life, and extend the measure thereof to a larger proportion then nature allows him, is by the study of history!" ― Thomas Fuller, Ephemeris Parliamentaria, preface A first edition of the written record of the most important of all English parliaments that lead directly to the Petition of Right of 1628. This document determined the specific liberties that the king had, particularly on taxation, imprisonment, and martial law. "Ephemeris Parliamentaria" is arranged chronologically with reports of constitutional debates and lengthy speeches by Coke, Digges, Littleton, Selden and others. While Thomas Fuller is much more known for his 'Church History,' this lesser-known title is extremely important to the progress of the English monarchy during the reign of King Charles I.
Wilson ... and are to be sold by Francis Tyton, 1654.

First published at Paris in 1651, this edition has the important De thoracicis lacteis dissertatio added. Written against Jean Riolan, the dissertatio is dedicated to Thomas Bartholin, who, on the basis of Pecquet's discoveries, was able to confirm and extend them to cover the entire lymphatic system.'Pecquet . engaged not in the "mute and frozen science" of cadaver anatomy, but in anatomia animata on dogs, cattle, pigs, and sheep. Using a dog that was digesting, he showed the following: 1. If the heart has been resected, pressure on the mesenteric root causes the chyle to spurt into the superior vena cava. 2. The chyle is directed toward the subclavian veins by two paravertebral canals that swell when their distal extremities are ligatured. 3. The origin of the ascending chyliferous ducts is situated in a prevertebral and subdiaphragmatic ampulla . 4. The posterior part of Aselli's pancreas is composed of lymphatic ganglia. 5. No mesenteric chyliferous vessel goes to the liver . and the interior vena cava, incised above the liver, reveals no trace of chyle. The human thoracic duct was rediscovered by Thomas Bartholin, Rudbeck, and Gayant. With Perrault and Gayant, Pecquet eventually observed the communications of the human thoracic du … [Click Below for Full Description]
