[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Coke, Zachary [possible pseud. of Henry Ainsworth].
Pr. by Robert White for George Calvert, 1654. First edition: a systematic, philosophical approach to the rigors of logical thought. The authorship of this work is debated, with some sources accepting the title-page attribution to Zachary Coke and others suggesting Brownist clergyman Henry Ainsworth (1571-1622), while still others describe the text as heavily indebted to an unauthorized, abridged translation of Bartholomäus Keckermann's Systema Logicae; Harvard notes that "the 'Advertisement to the reader' in the second edition (1657) states that Coke obtained a manuscript of Henry Ainsworth & 'printed it as his own.'" Regardless of whether this work was actually done by Coke's hand or another's, Marco Sgarbi notes that "there is no doubt that Coke's logic was the most complete logical handbook in English written before Locke's Essay" (The Aristotelian Tradition & the Rise of British Empiricism, p. 198). The present example appears to be the variant printing of the first edition as described by the University of Illinois, with line 32 of p. 179 giving "F acies" (instead of "Fallacies"); ESTC and Thomason suggest that the actual printing date was 1653. => Printed legend "Cokes Art of Logick in English." vertically on a blank between the front free endpaper and the title-page; the relic of a ream wrapper. Binding: Notably elegant period-style quarter speckled calf and marbled paper-covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, raised bands, and blind-tooled decorations filling compartments. Chrysostom, John, Saint
Thomas Dring, 1654. First edition, 16mo, pp. [10], 126, [6]; an excerpt from the homiletic writings of St. John Chrysostom, probably written during the time of his episcopate towards the end of the 4th century A.D., at the time when Theodosius was emperor of Constantinople, and Eudoxia his empress. Chrysostom was himself a native of Antioch, in Syria. This translation is dedicated to Sir Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Cleveland, and a prominent royalist general who was captured by Cromwell's forces in 1650; he narrowly escaped the death penalty, apparently on a technicality, and was instead imprisoned in the Tower until his release in 1656. The translator Viscount Grandison was a fellow prisoner, and presumably a supporter of Charles I as well. Wing C3980 records three copies only: British Library, Bodleian, and Keble College, Oxford. ESTC adds no others. Bound with: The certainty of heavenly, and the uncertainty of earthy treasures. Together with a discovery where the treasure and heart is placed. As it was delivered in severall sermons, by that eminently faithfull servant of Christ, Mr. William Strong, late minister at Winchester. London: printed by W. Wilson ... and are to be sold by Francis Tyton, 1654. First edition, pp. [2], 204; title and text within ruled borders.Wing S5998. Edinburgh and Folger only in ESTC. COPAC adds a very imperfect copy at the BL. William Strong was a prominent independent divine; he was born at Durham and educated at Cambridge. 1654. When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay.Up for sale is a very rare and early copy of "Remarques sur la langue françoise" this one published by published by Augustin Courbe with a publication date of 1654. This is an important early edition of the French take on language in the 16 and 1700's. This of course being the 1600s. Early edition. Book is in decent condition with the following issues. First, original boards are gone replace by softcover blue boards that are old but not 1600's old. Book begins at title page and there is some damage to the page along the spine. A piece missing, also writing in pen. There is a large dark stain at upper right towards the end of the book. It does not impact the text but is on the boarder. Other smaller stains present but outside of the one large stain and some browning text is generally in nice and unmarked condition. The last page of the index where "Fin" is written has been ripped in half and bottom half is gone. Other than that the condition is in nice shape and this book would be a good candidate for a nice leather binding. Binding is solid, pages clean and while they have wear are in nice shape. There is scuffing and chipping along the boards, some pages folded etc.. Please email with questions and seem y store for other great items.
