You are bidding on an early first edition by noted Puritan Theologian John Owen. This book is listed in Wing's catalog(Wing 0817) and is in the original boards with a professional re-backing.WorldCat locates only 23 copies of this edition and this one is much better condition than the one housed in Union Theological Seminary Seminary Library which was used for the usual available microform copy. According to Wikipedia, John Owen was an English Nonconformist church leader, theologian, and academic administrator at the University of Oxford. He was briefly a member of parliament for the University, sitting in the First Protectorate Parliament of 1654 to 1655. One biographic volume say of Owen that he "was without doubt not only the greatest theologian of the English Puritan movement but also one of the greatest European Reformed theologians of his day, and quite possibly possessed the finest theological mind that England ever produced" ("Owen, John", in Biographical Dictionary of Evangelicals, p. 494).He was a contemporary, friend and influential with such 17th Cent luminaries as Samuel Parker, John Milton and Andrew Marvell. Other Owen works have sold for upward of $1500 so this is a great opportunity to own a true rarity.

Gayton, Edmund
London: William Hunt, 1654. First edition. Woodcut initials, head-and tail-pieces. [14], 136, 139-290 pp. π1 [*]4, [**]2; B-2O4. 1 vols. Folio. 1654 Commentary on "The Shakespeare of the Mancha". First edition of this commentary on Cervantes, with three early references to Shakespeare. Gayton's Pleasant Notes Upon Don Quixote constantly departs from its ostensible subject to introduce colorful anecdotes of contemporary London. One of the "Sons of Ben," the group of poets and playwrights that gathered around Ben Jonson, Gayton was well-informed about the playwrights of his day. The book is especially valued as an early source of three early references to Shakespeare. Shakespeare is named in a list of admirable English writers on p. 21; on p. 95, Don Quixote is called "The Shake-speare of the Mancha"; and on p. 150, in a discussion of poets and mistresses, includes Shakespeare among those English poets who amorous inclinations were restrained by matrimony: "Our Naton also hath had its Poets, and they their wives: To passe the Bards: Sir Jeffery Chaucer liv'd very honestly at Woodstock, with his lady ... and wrote against the vice most wittily, which Wedlock restrains. My Father Ben [Jonson] begate sonnes and daughters; so did Spencer, Drayton, Shakespeare ..." The English translation of the first part of Don Quixote (by Thomas Shelton) appeared in 1612; the second part, also by Shelton, in 1620. Shakespeare died in 1616, and the first edition of his collected plays appeared in 1623. Wing G415; ESTC R7599. Modern full brown calf in the style of the period, raised bands. FRANZ, Wolfgang
1654 Existence of UNICORNS! Animalium Historia Zoology Cryptozoology Dragons Wolfgang Franz was a German Lutheran theologian from the 16th-century who, curiously, composed a zoological treatise on the history of animals at the end of his career. Franz was known for his disputations and theological treatises and this book, on animals no less, is right in line with his important works of theology. ‘Animalium Historia Sacra’ was one of Franz’s final published works in which he targeted theological students and priests with his discussions. The purpose of this book was to provide accurate information to preachers who sought to use parallels of wildlife and animals in their sermons. Instead of discussing the physical attributes of animals, Franz teaches on the moral, aesthetic, and miraculous qualities of animals. One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is Franz’s insistence that the unicorn is a regularly occurring animal in nature. He supports his claims through scriptural references to what he considers to be the Bible’s description of a unicorn. Other oddities include the existence of Dragons, rise of dead animals back to life, and the mysterious appearance of rats and mice on ships. Autres biz … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Chrysostom
Thomas Dring. First edition, 16mo, pp. [10], 126, [6]; an excerpt from the homiletic writings of St. John Chrysostom, probably written during the time of his episcopate towards the end of the 4th century A.D., at the time when Theodosius was emperor of Constantinople, and Eudoxia his empress. Chrysostom was himself a native of Antioch, in Syria. This translation is dedicated to Sir Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Cleveland, and a prominent royalist general who was captured by Cromwell's forces in 1650; he narrowly escaped the death penalty, apparently on a technicality, and was instead imprisoned in the Tower until his release in 1656. The translator Viscount Grandison was a fellow prisoner, and presumably a supporter of Charles I as well. Wing C3980 records three copies only: British Library, Bodleian, and Keble College, Oxford. ESTC adds no others. Bound with: The certainty of heavenly, and the uncertainty of earthy treasures. Together with a discovery where the treasure and heart is placed. As it was delivered in severall sermons, by that eminently faithfull servant of Christ, Mr. William Strong, late minister at Winchester. London: printed by W. Wilson. .. and are to be sold by Francis Tyton, 1654. First edition, pp. [2], 204; title and text within ruled borders.Wing S5998. Edinburgh and Folger only in ESTC. COPAC adds a very imperfect copy at the BL. William Strong was a prominent independent divine; he was born at Durham and educated at Cambridge. In 1640 he became rector of Moore Critchell in Dorsetshire but he was driven out in 1643 when the royalists attained ascenda … [Click Below for Full Description]
