TASSO, Gio Francesco.
Genoa. Benedetto Gualco. 1654. Bound in full contemp. vellum. 5 x 3 inches. Faded labelling to spine. Contemporary inscription to f.ep. Some gatherings lightly water-stained to edges with no loss. Contents unusually clean and fresh. 229 + 23pp. Chiabrera Gabriel (1552-1638), poet Savona, was a pupil of Paul Manutius and Sperone Speroni, and then serving several patrons in Rome and Florence. His literary and historical significance is that to him, leaning to the recovery of tradition can be traced back to Arcadia. This heroic poem, composed of 23 songs in the eighth verse, tells the fictional business of Amadeus V of Savoy, said the Conte Verde, engaged in the defense of Rhodes against the Turks. The Amedeida became a landmark not only for literary contemporaries, but especially for the eighteenth-century poets attracted to the mastery of several styles.

Mathias Merian
Profp. der Statt Parys wei folche an ietso an sufehen 1654 (Paris, France)Mathias MerianLarge illustrated plate from Topographia GalliaeAmsterdam: 1661Copperplate engravingSheet size: 12" x 32 1/2"Mathias Merian was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the ?Great Voyages.? Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland, Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry?s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils -- among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons-in-law Christoph Le Blon and Melchior Kusel. His most famous pupil, however, would prove to be his daughter, Maria Sybillia Merian, a truly exceptional botanical artist of the early 18th century.

Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571-1638) 'Glottiana Praefectura Inferior, cum Baronia Glascuensi, [vulgo], The nether ward of Clyds-dail and Glasco' from "Le Théatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas” publsihed in Amsterdam, 1654. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Paper size:24"x19 1/2". Condition: Generally good with some minor aging along margins and small repair in upper right corner. A map depicting part of scotland with an exquisite cartouche in the upper left corner. Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571-1638) was the founding father of the single most important cartographic publishing company in the Netherlands for nearly one hundred years. Blaeu’s firm was based in Amsterdam, the center of European cartography at the time. Blaeu was also the hydographic expert for the famous East India Company and the chief cartographer of the United Republic of the Netherlands. Willem, along with his son Johanne, published the first two volumes of "Le Théatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas” in 1635 by 1672, however, the atlas had expanded into 12 volumes, the "Geographia Blaviana”, depicting in about 600 maps the entire known world with most up to date cartographic exactness of the time. The Bleau-atlasses, meant for the wealthiest Europeans, were produced using exceptionally high quality standards of engraving, typography, paper and hand-coloring, not to mention being expertly surveyed within the company. The maps are among the most beautiful ever made, embellished in the baroque style with ornamental cartouches and marvelous staffages so that the viewer is struck by the decorative value his eyes … [Click Below for Full Description]

Spittlehouse, John.
Livewell Chapman, London, 1654. Sole edition. John Spittlehouse was a Fifth Monarchist and determined controversialist who supported Cromwell until concluding that Cromwell was not, in fact, the new Moses. Here the author uses a great many capital letters and Biblical quotations to argue in favor of the dissolution of Parliament and against maintaining a standing army, since the army had taken to apostasy and hypocrisy. (Spittlehouse also wrote The Army Vindicated, in their Late Dissolution of the Parliament; his postscript here notes that his position on the army had changed since the publication of that pamphlet.) ESTC and WorldCat locate only six U.S. institutional holdings of this item. 4to (18 cm, 7.1"). [2], 14 pp. ESTC R203631; Wing (rev. ed.) S5005. On Spittlehouse, see: Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online. Later plain paper wrappers, spine reinforced with cloth tape. Title-page, first text page, and two other pages institutionally pressure-stamped; first text page with inked annotation in inner margin and numeral in lower margin. Light offsetting and spotting; first and last pages dust-soiled. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Cromwell, Oliver
London: Henry Hills, 1654 Book. Very Good-. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The prior owner, as was his occasional habit, has penciled the items Wing Listing #C7171 at the margin of the first title page, above this a trace of old/mild erasure is evident. The sum of the printing information,"Published To prevent Mistakes, and false copies. LONDON, Printed by Henry Hills Printer to His Highness The Lord Protector, and to be sold at the sign of Sir John Oldcastle near Py-Corner. MDCLIV." The pamphlet has been bound in navy cloth boards and numbers 36 pages (last page is note from Jessop forbidding reprint). Size is 7 3/8 X 5" collation quarto. Spine is neatly labeled in gilt on black. The listed grade may be thought of as a compromise between the restoration, newish and nicely done, and the text which has age darkening and edge chip and other issues which will be specified. Specfically, the title page has a mild crease which may or may not be visible in foto to accompany listing. The first page of text has lower corner piece missing (1/2 postage stamp size) and the last 2 pages have tinier chips out at their lower edge. The lower edge has the sort of unevenness of finishing and consistent darkness that I associate with a natural cutting at time of the books making, the same is the case with the fore-edge. The top edge has micro dog ear and tiny chip coming out at upper corner of 13th page. The later pages, in some cases, have partial number cropping at top, I supect this is as made, as this edge is darkened and surely was not altered to fit the modern reworking. Text is complete and h … [Click Below for Full Description]
