augustin courbe. Early 1654 ed
1654. When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay. Up for sale is a very rare and early copy of "Remarques sur la langue françoise" this one published by published by Augustin Courbe with a publication date of 1654. This is an important early edition of the French take on language in the 16 and 1700's. This of course being the 1600s. Early edition. Book is in decent condition with the following issues. First, original boards are gone replace by softcover blue boards that are old but not 1600's old. Book begins at title page and there is some damage to the page along the spine. A piece missing, also writing in pen. There is a large dark stain at upper right towards the end of the book. It does not impact the text but is on the boarder. Other smaller stains present but outside of the one large stain and some browning text is generally in nice and unmarked condition. The last page of the index where "Fin" is written has been ripped in half and bottom half is gone. Other than that the condition is in nice shape and this book would be a good candidate for a nice leather binding. Binding is solid, pages clean and while they have wear are in nice shape. There is scuffing and chipping along the boards, some pages folded etc.. Please email with questions and seem y store for other great items.

John Chrysostom
London: Thomas Dring, 1654. First edition, 16mo, pp. [10], 126, [6]; an excerpt from the homiletic writings of St. John Chrysostom, probably written during the time of his episcopate towards the end of the 4th century A.D., at the time when Theodosius was emperor of Constantinople, and Eudoxia his empress. Chrysostom was himself a native of Antioch, in Syria. This translation is dedicated to Sir Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Cleveland, and a prominent royalist general who was captured by Cromwell's forces in 1650; he narrowly escaped the death penalty, apparently on a technicality, and was instead imprisoned in the Tower until his release in 1656. The translator Viscount Grandison was a fellow prisoner, and presumably a supporter of Charles I as well. Wing C3980 records three copies only: British Library, Bodleian, and Keble College, Oxford. ESTC adds no others. Bound with: The certainty of heavenly, and the uncertainty of earthy treasures. Together with a discovery where the treasure and heart is placed. As it was delivered in severall sermons, by that eminently faithfull servant of Christ, Mr. William Strong, late minister at Winchester. London: printed by W. Wilson. .. and are to be sold by Francis Tyton, 1654. First edition, pp. [2], 204; title and text within ruled borders.Wing S5998. Edinburgh and Folger only in ESTC. COPAC adds a very imperfect copy at the BL. William Strong was a prominent independent divine; he was born at Durham and educated at Cambridge. In 1640 he became rector of Moore Critchell in Dorsetshire but he was driven out in 1643 when the royalists at … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard Smith
ont> Federicum Leonard : Parisiis, 1654 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of this Latin work regarding the ecclesiastical history of England. Written in the seventeenth century, this is a very scarce work by the once Vicar Apostolic of England, Richard Smith. Smith was a Roman Catholic, and was ordained in Rome as a priest in 1592. He held the position of Apostolic Vicar for England, Wales and Scotland from 1625. Following a warrant for his arrest he resigned his post and fled to Paris, where this work was published. A well-preserved copy of this work, which has been rebacked with the original boards preserved. In Latin. With only a few copies held on Copac, mostly at institutional and Cathedral libraries. The York Minster copy of this work states that there is a half-title. Ours does not have a half-title. Library plate to the front pastedown, depicting a Bishop holding a head, possibly Denis. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of front endpaper, Joseph Gillow. Gillow was an English Roman Catholic Antiquary. He wrote several biographies of Catholics and was referenced by Thomas Bridgett in 'The Catholic Who's Who and Yearbook' of 1908 which is then referenced in the ODNB as 'The Plutarch of the English Catholics'. He frequently contributed to the Catholic Record Society. This work is a piece of Ecclesiastical history regarding England, from a Roman Catholic standpoint. Condition: In a full calf binding. Rebacked, with the original boards preserved. Externally, sound, with loss to the boards at the extremities. Prior owner's bookplate to the fr … [Click Below for Full Description]

WARD, Seth.
WARD, Seth. Vindiciæ Academarium containing some briefe animadversions upon Mr Webster's Book, stiled, The Examination of Academies. Oxford: Leonard Lichfield. 1654.Small 4to. Recently rebound in full brown morocco, gilt lettering to spine; pp. 65; very good. Provenance: family copy with bookplate of a later Seth Ward to front pastedown.First edition. Seth Ward (1617-1689) was an astronomer, mathematician and Bishop of Salisbury. This was an important work in the ongoing controversy started by Thomas Hobbes's attack on the Oxbridge system in Leviathan (1651). The chemist John Webster weighed in on Hobbes's side with his Examen Academarium, which doubted the need of a university-educated clergy. This is Ward's riposte, which comes with a preface by his ally John Wilkins. It was published anonymously because of the strength of the opinions expressed, although there was a clue to the author's identity - it is signed at the end 'H.D', which are the last letters of Ward's first- and surnames. Although the book is aimed at Webster it also contains a detailed refutation of Hobbes and his contention that the universities refused to each anything beyond Aristotle: "... natural science and all new forms of knowledge are welcomed, mathematics has been considerably advanced, chemistry and magnetism are studied, and projects are afoot for establishing a laboratory for chemical, mechanical and optical researches. Those who cry out upon the university exercises in the schools close their eyes to the work done in college halls and in tutors' chambers". Ward was a founding member of the Roy … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARCHETTI, Pietro (1589-1673)
Padova, Giovanni Battista Pasquati for Matteo Cadorin called Bolzetta, 1654. In-4° (mm 230x170). Pagine [6], 4, [2]. Segnatura: A6. Illustrazione anatomica incisa a piena pagina al recto dell'ultima carta, il cui verso e' bianco. Marca tipografica al frontespizio. Senza legatura e sciolto. Esemplare in barbe. Marchetti fu chiamato a curarlo.
