[Click Below for Full Description]

Henry VIII; Boleyn, Anne; Elizabeth I; Devereux, Robert (Earl of Essex); Cecil, Robert (Earl of Salisbury); Walsingham, Francis; Bacon, Francis; Bodeley, Thomas; James I; Raleigh, Walter; Philip III of Spain; Charles I, et al.
London: Printed for G. Bedel, and T. Collins, and are to be sold at their Shop at the Middle-Temple-gate in Fleet-street, 1654. First edition of this collection of internal and otherwise "secret" primary sources from the reign of Henry VIII through Charles I. Beginning with Henry VIII's 1533 letter to the clergy in York, "touching his Title of Supreme Head of the Church of England," and the doomed Anne Boleyn's 1536 letter to the king from her cell, this compilation offers readers insight into the politics of early modern England at every level. The machinations of Spain, the problems with Ireland, and the uneasy position of Catholics in England are all addressed by heads of state and their closest counselors, while Thomas Bodeley rebukes Francis Bacon for the arrogance of his scientific method, and Bacon admits to Essex that he has "plaid the ignorant Statesman, which I do to no body but your Lordship, except I do it to the Queen sometimes when she trains me on." Scrinia Sacra was issued as a companion volume to Cabala, the publisher's collection of related letters published earlier that year; the two volumes were released together with a new general title page soon after this first printing. Wing S2110. From the library of David Belasco (1853-1931), the American theatrical impresario and playwright, with his elaborate decorative bookplate. A very good example of a popular political sourcebook, handsomely bound by Daniel Gehnrich. Quarto, measuring 7.75 x 6 inches: [10], 355, [9]. PLEMP, Vopiscus Fortunatus
Lovanii: ac sumt. H. Nempaei, 1654. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Vopiscus Fortunatus Plemp was a 17th-century Dutch physician who closely followed the teachings and practices of William Harvey. As a close friend of Rene Descartes, Plempius corresponded frequently with the famous philosopher. In fact, the two were close enough that Descartes was frustrated with Plemp when Plemp published his 'Fundamenta Medicinae' without his approval. Though upon inspection, it was clear why Plemp did not seek Descartes' consent. 'Fundamenta Medicinae' references Harvey's blood circulation theories and outright rejected Descartes' explanations as "lacking a good empirical basis". (Alexandrescu). Plemp also discusses the teachings of Johannes Kepler especially in context with spectacles and optics, as well as a separate section on ophthalmology. [Attributes: First Edition]

PLEMP, Vopiscus Fortunatus
Lovanii: ac sumt. H. Nempaei, 1654. 1654 Fundamenta Medicinae Plempius Medicine Descartes Harvey Kepler Optics Vopiscus Fortunatus Plemp was a 17th-century Dutch physician who closely followed the teachings and practices of William Harvey. (Alexandrescu).Plemp also discusses the teachings of Johannes Kepler especially in context with spectacles and optics, as well as a separate section on ophthalmology.Item number: #8964Price: $1500PLEMP, Vopiscus FortunatusVopisci Fortunati Plempii... fundamenta medicinae ad scholae acribologiam aptata. MELDER, Gerard.
Very rare first edition of a popular, richly illustrated text book on fortification by Gerard Melder, including the Appendix (mentioned on the title-page), containing the author's answer to his Amsterdam colleague Ruse discussing the proper system of fortification fit for education. The end of the first part gives 50 problems for the pupils to solve. In 1654 Henrick Ruse, engineer of the fortifications and head of the battalion at Amsterdam, published his Versterckte vesting, in which he broke with the traditional views of fortification as presented by Freitag and Marolois. In answer to Ruse, Gerard Melder, director of the fortifications and the battalion of the city of Utrecht, published the present "Short and clear instruction" in which he clearly taught and illustrated the well-tried Dutch system of fortification, with which the Dutch had won their war against Spain. Ruse answered this with Aenwijsinge der misverstanden van G. Melder, published in 1658, to which Melder again responded with the present Appendix.Frontispiece slightly soiled and small corner torn off, faint water stain on title-page and some occasional minor foxing. CHRISTINA, former Queen of Sweden (subject).
STCN (2 copies); KVK & WorldCat (4 copies including the 2 in STCN); not in Buisman; Scheepers. First issue of the second edition of a rare Dutch account of Christina's six years of travels through Europe after her 1654 abdication as Queen of Sweden, with an etched and engraved portrait of Christina (1626-1689), apparently unique to the present edition, after a ca. 1653 painting by Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671). The first two editions are both very rare. The three folding plates, showing Christina in Stockholm (her 1654 abdication), Rome (1655) and Paris (1656), are copied from the first edition. After the main text follow four pages explaining the four engravings. The preliminaries of the present edition include two poems by the great Dutch Catholic poet Vondel in praise of Christina.Christina's father, King Gustav Adolf of Sweden, died when she was five years old, leaving her heir to the throne. She was therefore educated as a prince and demonstrated both a brilliant mind and a passion for scholarship, theology, philosophy, literature, politics, music and the arts. She attended council meetings from age 14 and gave patronage to René Descartes (who lived at the Stockholm court and tutored her), the composers Scarlatti and Corelli, who directed her court quire and orchestra, and the sculptor and architect Bernini, who became her friend. She also established the Accademia dell'Arcadia in Rome. She secretly converted to Catholicism in 1652 and abdicated in 1654, in part because she knew the powerful Lutherans in Sweden would not accept a Catholic queen and in part hoping to es … [Click Below for Full Description]

[AQUINAS, Thomas].
Early 20th-century Chinese translation of Thomas Aquinas's most famous work, the Summa theologiae. The Chinese translation of the Index was completed, but the translation of the Summa theologiae was, just like the original work, never finished. The first Chinese edition was published in Beijing in 1654-1678. The work was intended as a theological manual for beginners and summarizes the reasonings for almost all points of Christian theology. The topics follow a cycle: the existence of God, God's creation, Man, Man's purpose, Christ, the Sacraments, and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the quinquae viae. Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish and even Islamic and ancient pagan scholars. Some water stains and restorations. Amsterdam - Joan Blaeu, 1654
1654. 17TH CENTURY PLAN OF AMSTERDAM BY THE JOAN BLAEU, THE MOST CELEBRATED MASTER- CARTOGRAPHER EVER 'Amstelodami celeberrimi hollandiae emporii delineatio nova.'Copper engraving of Amsterdam published by Joan Blaeu in 1654, with original hand colouring. Verso Dutch text. Size: 41 x 53,5 cm. Very attractive bird's-eye view of the most important 17th century European city, made at the height of Dutch cartography, during Amsterdam's Golden Age as one of the leading trading empires of Europe. The river Amstel is still an open water flowing through the heart of the city. Only near the Dam square it has been covered by the stock exchange and the fishmarket. The plan shows the city and its canals enclosed within the medieval town walls. There were plans to expand the city and Blaeu has drawn the new town walls with its bastions in the south- and east side of the city to show the area to be enclosed on completion of the construction. Numerous small buildings are shown and windmills are on the city walls. The map's side panels to the left and right give a key with 107 different numbered locations. In the foreground are numerous sailing ships and docks fill the busy port. The city's coat of arms is in the upper left corner the city's seal in the upper right. Joan Blaeu produced this map for 'Toonneel der Steden van de Verenigde Nederlanden' [Town Atlas of the Low Countries] in 1649, largely to commemorate Dutch independence from Spain at the conclusion of the Eighty Years' War.
