Saint Dorotheus of Gaza was a 6th-century monk from Syria/Palestine who wrote several instructional treatises for the other members of his monastery. These works were written as directions on spiritual living - stressing the importance of obedience, silence, reading the scriptures, character of God, and overcoming temptation and human vices. This 17th-century French version of writings of Dorotheus includes many of the spiritual doctrines written by Giles of Assisi, 13th-century saint. HUIPS, Frans van der (d. 1679)]
[Part one:] Heusden, for the author, 1654; [Part two:] Dordrecht, Jacob Braat, 1654[colophon 1653]. 2 parts in one vol, 8vo (147 x 97 mm), pp [xvi, including initial blank] 158; [2] 70 [2, blank], with Jacob Braat's woodcut emblem device on second title and numerous formulae in text; a fine, crisp copy in contemporary Dutch vellum, a bit soiled. First edition of this rare work on algebra, one of the first Dutch textbooks of advanced mathematics, and one of six known copies. Huips sought to make the techniques of higher mathematics available to navigators, astronomers, engineers, and others. He shows himself conversant in the latest advances of mathematics, including the works of Simon Stevin, John Wallis, Descartes, and his own countryman Stampioen. This work appears to be the first Continental work after Stampioen to adopt the equal sign recently introduced in England. The work covers determining square roots (and utilizing the recent symbol for square root), dealing with exponents, solving equations with unknown quantities, and the basics of Diophantine algebra. The second part contains Dutch versions of the six books on algebra from the Arithmeticorum by Diophantus, previously available only in Latin and French (the latter translated by Stevin in 1585 and probably Huips' source).Huips had been a schoolteacher and sexton at Huesden prior to the present work. He was living in Amsterdam by 1661, and was a naval examiner for the Dutch East India Company and assistant to their chief cartographer Joan Blaeu. The work was published by the author in Heusden, but printed for him in … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is for the political satires he composed during the English Civil Wars that Cleveland is chiefly remembered; notably The Character of a London-Diurnall (London?, 1644), which includes amongst an attack on the prevalence of Civil War newsbooks a sketch on Cromwell, and The Rebell Scot, a withering attack on Scots ('Sure England hath the Hemeroids, and these On the North posture of the patience sieze, Like Leeches, thu … [Click Below for Full Description]

PECQUET (Jean)
Paris: Officina Cramoisiana, 1654. 4to (190 x 145 mm), [16], 252, [2 errata]pp., with one full-page engraving and five engraved illustrations in the text, unobtrusive light damp stain throughout, new endpapers, contemporary calf, rubbed, neatly rebacked. Pecquet's famous work recording his discovery of the cisterna chyli. First published at Paris in 1651, this edition has the important De thoracicis lacteis dissertatio added. Written against Jean Riolan, the dissertatio is dedicated to Thomas Bartholin, who, on the basis of Pecquet's discoveries, was able to confirm and extend them to cover the entire lymphatic system. "Pecquet ... engaged not in the "mute and frozen science" of cadaver anatomy, but in anatomia animata on dogs, cattle, pigs, and sheep. Using a dog that was digesting, he showed the following: 1. If the heart has been resected, pressure on the mesenteric root causes the chyle to spurt into the superior vena cava. 2. The chyle is directed toward the subclavian veins by two paravertebral canals that swell when their distal extremities are ligatured. 3. The origin of the ascending chyliferous ducts is situated in a prevertebral and subdiaphragmatic ampulla ... 4. The posterior part of Aselli's pancreas is composed of lymphatic ganglia. 5. No mesenteric chyliferous vessel goes to the liver ... and the interior vena cava, incised above the liver, reveals no trace of chyle. The human thoracic duct was rediscovered by Thomas Bartholin, Rudbeck, and Gayant. With Perrault and Gayant, Pecquet eventually observed the communications of the human thoracic duct with th … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

CHRISTINA, former Queen of Sweden (subject).
1654. STCN (2 copies); KVK & WorldCat (4 copies including the 2 in STCN); not in Buisman; Scheepers. First issue of the second edition of a rare Dutch account of Christina's six years of travels through Europe after her 1654 abdication as Queen of Sweden, with an etched and engraved portrait of Christina (1626-1689), apparently unique to the present edition, after a ca. 1653 painting by Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671). The first two editions are both very rare. The three folding plates, showing Christina in Stockholm (her 1654 abdication), Rome (1655) and Paris (1656), are copied from the first edition. After the main text follow four pages explaining the four engravings. The preliminaries of the present edition include two poems by the great Dutch Catholic poet Vondel in praise of Christina.Christina's father, King Gustav Adolf of Sweden, died when she was five years old, leaving her heir to the throne. She was therefore educated as a prince and demonstrated both a brilliant mind and a passion for scholarship, theology, philosophy, literature, politics, music and the arts. She attended council meetings from age 14 and gave patronage to René Descartes (who lived at the Stockholm court and tutored her), the composers Scarlatti and Corelli, who directed her court quire and orchestra, and the sculptor and architect Bernini, who became her friend. She also established the Accademia dell'Arcadia in Rome. She secretly converted to Catholicism in 1652 and abdicated in 1654, in part because she knew the powerful Lutherans in Sweden would not accept a Catholic queen and in part hoping … [Click Below for Full Description]
