Fuller, Thomas, Compiler
1654. An Important Source Relating to the Origins of the English Civil War F[uller], T[homas] [1608-1661], Compiler. Ephemeris Parliamentaria; Or a Faithfull Register of the Transactions in Parliament, In the Third and Fourth Years of the Reign of Our Late Sovereign Lord King Charles: Containing the Severall Speeches, Cases, and Arguments of Law Transacted Between his Majesty and Both Houses. Together with the Grand Mysteries of the Kingdome then in Agitation. London: Printed for John Williams and Francis Eglesfield, 1654. [xx], 136, 121-269, [3] pp. Text continuous despite pagination. Folio (10-1/2" x 7"). Recent calf, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Negligible light rubbing to boards. Title page printed in red and black, woodcut head-piece and decorated initials. Moderate toning and wrinkling to text, occasional faint dampspotting. Later tick marks in light pencil to margins, interior otherwise clean. * Only edition. A landmark in historical research, this was the first printed collection of Parliamentary addresses. Published during the Commonwealth period to help elucidate the events of the recent past, it records the tumultuous debates between Crown and Parliament during the early regnal years of Charles I. Fuller's preface, considered by some to the best of its kind ever written, "convincingly justifies the concept of viewing recent and current events as historically significant, and studying them in the same manner" (Wing). It is certainly a vivid collection, one that gives you a sense of presence as England moved toward civil war. OCLC l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kent, Elizabeth Talbot Gray, countess of; W.J.
London: G.D., 1654. Fourth Edition. Hardcover (rebound in leather). Good Condition. Rebound in plain modern calf. Lacking the portrait, soiling to first title, last few pages chipped at edges, scattered mostly minor stains and creases. (viii), 206; (xviii), 140pp. Cagle 786/788 (1653 eds.), Bitting 201 (1659), Notaker 531.4. First published in 1653, the Choice Manuall was compiled (at least by convention) from The Countess of Kent's receipts by "W.J." (who signed the preface). It's likely that W.J. also compiled the second part, but it's unclear from where. The True Gentlewoman's Delight collects 232 recipes with no real organizing principle. It includes the first recipe for a "fricassee" (frigasie of chickens, lamb) and a wide array of sugar cookery and preserves, including some advance in marmalade technology (see: jelly of pippins and jelly of marmalet). Unlike continental recipe books of the period, this, like a number of others from the same period, was aimed directly and exclusively at (upper class) women. Size: 24mo. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Cooking, Wine & Dining; Inventory No: CAT000139.

Cromwell, Oliver
Henry Hills, London, 1654, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good-, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, 1st EditionThe prior owner, as was his occasional habit, has penciled the items Wing Listing #C7171 at the margin of the first title page, above this a trace of old/mild erasure is evident. The sum of the printing information,"Published To prevent Mistakes, and false copies. LONDON, Printed by Henry Hills Printer to His Highness The Lord Protector, and to be sold at the sign of Sir John Oldcastle near Py-Corner. MDCLIV." The pamphlet has been bound in navy cloth boards and numbers 36 pages (last page is note from Jessop forbidding reprint). Size is 7 3/8 X 5" collation quarto. Spine is neatly labeled in gilt on black. The listed grade may be thought of as a compromise between the restoration, newish and nicely done, and the text which has age darkening and edge chip and other issues which will be specified. Specfically, the title page has a mild crease which may or may not be visible in foto to accompany listing. The first page of text has lower corner piece missing (1/2 postage stamp size) and the last 2 pages have tinier chips out at their lower edge. The lower edge has the sort of unevenness of finishing and consistent darkness that I associate with a natural cutting at time of the books making, the same is the case with the fore-edge. The top edge has micro dog ear and tiny chip coming out at upper corner of 13th page. The later pages, in some cases, have partial number cropping at top, I supect this is as made, as this edge is darkened and surely was not altered to fit … [Click Below for Full Description]

KORNMANN, Heinrich.
Ad 1: Bibl. Med. Neerl. p. 72; Caillet 5829; Gay-Lemmonyer III, cols. 1113-1114; STCN (5 copies); ad 2: Adams B2295; BMC STC Dutch p. 37. Rare first complete Netherlands edition of three curious Latin works on women, love and marriage, by Heinrich Kornmann. The first treats the rights and duties of women and their conduct in matters of sex, the second is about the commonplace of the five stages of love (sight, conversation, physical contact, kissing and consummation) and the third is devoted to rings, including engagement rings. Kornmann refers to a wide variety of sources, including classical authors and church fathers. He defends women's rights to some degree, but also repeats superstitious beliefs such as that a tree is injured by a virgin's plucking its first fruit. He further discusses incubi and succubi, astrology and the colour of women's cloths (preferably blue, pink, green and white). It is bound with Theodoor Pulman's edition of Boethius's classic Consolation of philosophy, published by the famous Officina Plantiniana. With an early owner's inscription and two stamps, Endpapers with extensive manuscript annotation. The Boethius with some browning, otherwise in very good condition. Binding rubbed and slightly soiled.

Paris, Cardin Besongne 1654 - in-8, [109] pp. mal chiffrées 119, [3] pp. n. ch. (table des matières, privilège), veau brun, dos à nerfs cloisonné et fleuronné à l'imitation, tranches mouchetées (reliure pastiche). Bon exemplaire.

Gutes Exemplar. - VD17 23:302341X. Dünnhaupt 9 (nennt Bacons 'Essays' von 1597 als Vorlage). Goed. III, 247, 14, 4.
