CORONATION - LOUIS XIV
Paris: chez Pierre David, 1654. 12mo (139 x 79 mm). Collation: a6 A-K6 (K6 blank, preserved). [12], 117, [1] pp. Sheet A3-4 misfolded (thus pages 5-8 out of order). A few woodcut initials. Contemporary parchment over flexible pasteboards, angled thonged endband ties at head and tail of joints; old manuscript title and date on spine. Slight creasing to corners at end, minor rodent damage to foot of lower cover and spine, lower pastedown torn. Provenance: Hippolyte de la Grimaudière, with his armorial bookplate (ca. 1900) of the Bibliothèque de La Hamonais and shelfmark label, the bookplate covering an earlier signature.*** Only edition of a popularized manual of protocol for the coronations of French kings, published on the eve of a not unimportant coronation: the achevé d'imprimer at end is dated 11 April 1654, less than two months before the magnificent Sacre and couronnement of Louis XIV, to whom the work is dedicated. The anonymous compiler (possibly the printer and bookseller Pierre David, who signed the preface) provides a chronological guide to the events, from the arrival of the King, his court and his many accoutrements in Reims, to his departure from that city for the traditional pilgrimage to the church of Saint Marcoul in Corbény (near Laon), where the Saint granted each King the power to heal scrofula. Precise details of costume, accessories, and disposition of ecclesiastical furniture, the lists of attending officials, of saints invoked, and transcriptions of innumerable Latin prayers, permitted onlookers in possession of this pocket-sized handbook, of whi … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANSON d'ABBEVILLE (Nicolas);
Paris Pierre Mariette 1654 398 x 484 mm. Pastoureau, SANSON V A, 6 ; Al Ankary, p. 196.

[Click Below for Full Description]

(HEBREW-ENGLISH DICTIONARY). ROBERTSON, WILLIAM
London: Printed by Evan Tyler for Humphrey Robinson, and for G. Sawbridge, [1654-55]. FIRST EDITION, Second Issue of the first title (with undated title page and with three additional preliminary leaves inserted between A1 and A2); FIRST EDITION of the second title. This is a 17th century English-Hebrew dictionary and grammar intended to make the ancient and holy language of the Old Testament accessible to every Christian. Robertson (fl. 1651-85) is described by DNB as "a pedagogical revolutionary with an egalitarian message and a passionate and parenthetical style" who stressed "the importance of reducing Hebrew words to their roots, and teaching the language by alphabetical principles rather than by scriptural texts." He was a dedicated teacher who believed that Hebrew was not an arcane and difficult language to master and that almost anyone could learn it without assistance, even females(!). As evidence of this radical belief, he dedicated these works to his student and patroness, Katherine, Lady Ranelagh, sister of the great Robert Boyle. The first work here begins with the Hebrew alphabet, some rules of grammar, and lists of root words. We then jump straight into translation, with Hebrew passages from the Old Testament followed by "Resolutions" (i.e., step-by-step translations) into English. The second work contains a Hebrew-English dictionary with an appendix of root words and derivative nouns, followed by more Hebrew passages and translations. The work concludes with an explanation of more esoteric points, including servile letters and suffixes. The three leaves ins … [Click Below for Full Description]

CLEVELAND, JOHN.
London: Printed in the year, 1654. First edition. Small octavo, 19th century calf rebacked, red morocco label, blind rules and decorations, gilt lettering, a.e.g. Frontis portrait and one plate. John Cleveland's account of the famous peasant insurrection led by Walter Tyler (d. 1381) against Richard II in protest over his tax on commoners to pay for the war with France. Tyler and his rebels entered London and terrorized supporters of the monarchy, but Tyler was killed after meeting with Richard II, and his followers were allowed to go home. G.A. Henty, among others, have fictionalized Tyler's Insurrection; Cleveland may be making subtle comparisons between Tyler and Cromwell. The text is preceded by a six-stanza poem to John Lydgate, the 15th century English poet and monk; in this copy another version poem, from Cleveland's Majestas Intemerata (1647) has also been inserted. Bookplate of Robert Marquess of Crewe on the front paste-down; bookplate of Robert S. Pirie on the front free endpaper. Plate mounted and possibly trimmed; frontis portrait repaired in the lower left corner with manuscript facsimile; very good copy.
