MANUSCRIPT. LAWSON, Admiral Sir John.
1654 1 page, 10 lines.Cromwell assumed the title of Lord Protector in the previous year and sought immediately to consolidate his position against any Royalist threat. With the fugitive Charles II on the continent, Cromwell was clearly worried by the threat of the young King raising his forces and invading via the Channel Islands. At this time, John Lawson, 1615-1665, was on board the Fairfax, which had been badly damaged by a fire at Chatham Docks in 1653 and rebuilt, and was the commander of the North Sea and English Channel fleet. The 'Downes' he refers to as his location is the area of sea just north east of Dover. The letter dates from the period immediately after the end of the 1st Anglo-Dutch War, and he reports that the Gainsborough and the Mermaid have been despatched to the Downes, and frigates have been sent to Flanders â€" where at this time Charles was in exile. Lawson served diligently on behalf of Parliament but was dismissed from office on political grounds in 1656 and later implicated in the conspiracy of the Fifth Monarchists and arrested in 1657. He was later appointed Commander in Chief of the Fleet in 1659 on the assumption of power by Richard Cromwell, and assisted George Monck in the orchestration of the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Lawson was knighted by Charles II following the Restoration, and died in 1665 from complications of a musket wound received during the Battle of Lowestoft in the 2nd Anglo-Dutch War. [AQUINAS, Thomas].
De Backer & Sommervogel II, col. 364 (under Buglio); Cordier, L'imprimerie Sino-Européenne en Chine, cols. 52-53 (idem). Early 20th-century Chinese translation of Thomas Aquinas's most famous work, the Summa theologiae. The Chinese translation of the Index was completed, but the translation of the Summa theologiae was, just like the original work, never finished. The first Chinese edition was published in Beijing in 1654-1678. The work was intended as a theological manual for beginners and summarizes the reasonings for almost all points of Christian theology. The topics follow a cycle: the existence of God, God's creation, Man, Man's purpose, Christ, the Sacraments, and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the quinquae viae. Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish and even Islamic and ancient pagan scholars. Some water stains and restorations. Good set.

Ireland - Janssonius, Johann / Johannes / Jan. (1588 - 1664)
Janssonius, Amsterdam 1654 - Original, hand-coloured engraving. Amsterdam, Janssonius, 1654. The engraving (the plate) itself 50.5 cm x 40 cm Mounted: c. 70 cm x 60 cm Original Map with beautifully coloured cartouche and border-colours. Johannes Janssonius (1588, Arnhem – buried July 11, 1664, Amsterdam) (born Jan Janszoon, in English often incorrect Jan Jansson) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam in the 17th century. Janssonius was born in Arnhem, the son of Jan Janszoon the Elder, a publisher and bookseller. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. Elisabeth Hondius died in 1627 and he remarried one Elisabeth Carlier in 1629. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing … [Click Below for Full Description]

CORONATION - LOUIS XIV
Paris: chez Pierre David, 1654. 12mo (139 x 79 mm). Collation: a6 A-K6 (K6 blank, preserved). [12], 117, [1] pp. Sheet A3-4 misfolded (thus pages 5-8 out of order). A few woodcut initials. Contemporary parchment over flexible pasteboards, angled thonged endband ties at head and tail of joints; old manuscript title and date on spine. Slight creasing to corners at end, minor rodent damage to foot of lower cover and spine, lower pastedown torn. Provenance: Hippolyte de la Grimaudière, with his armorial bookplate (ca. 1900) of the Bibliothèque de La Hamonais and shelfmark label, the bookplate covering an earlier signature.*** Only edition of a popularized manual of protocol for the coronations of French kings, published on the eve of a not unimportant coronation: the achevé d'imprimer at end is dated 11 April 1654, less than two months before the magnificent Sacre and couronnement of Louis XIV, to whom the work is dedicated. The anonymous compiler (possibly the printer and bookseller Pierre David, who signed the preface) provides a chronological guide to the events, from the arrival of the King, his court and his many accoutrements in Reims, to his departure from that city for the traditional pilgrimage to the church of Saint Marcoul in Corbény (near Laon), where the Saint granted each King the power to heal scrofula. Precise details of costume, accessories, and disposition of ecclesiastical furniture, the lists of attending officials, of saints invoked, and transcriptions of innumerable Latin prayers, permitted onlookers in possession of this pocket-sized handbook, of whi … [Click Below for Full Description]
