[AQUINAS, THOMAS].
, . . De Backer & Sommervogel II, col. 364 (under Buglio); Cordier, L'imprimerie Sino-Européenne en Chine, cols. 52-53 (idem). Early 20th-century Chinese translation of Thomas Aquinas's most famous work, the Summa theologiae. The Chinese translation of the Index was completed, but the translation of the Summa theologiae was, just like the original work, never finished. The first Chinese edition was published in Beijing in 1654-1678. The work was intended as a theological manual for beginners and summarizes the reasonings for almost all points of Christian theology. The topics follow a cycle: the existence of God, God's creation, Man, Man's purpose, Christ, the Sacraments, and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the quinquae viae. Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish and even Islamic and ancient pagan scholars. Some water stains and restorations. Good set.

It is certainly a vivid collection, one that gives you … [Click Below for Full Description]

Janssonius, Johann / Johannes / Jan. (1588 - 1664)
Janssonius,, 1654. Amsterdam, Janssonius, 1654. Original, hand-coloured engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 50.5 cm x 40 cm Mounted: c. 70 cm x 60 cm Original Map with beautifully coloured cartouche and border-colours. Johannes Janssonius (1588, Arnhem ? buried July 11, 1664, Amsterdam) (born Jan Janszoon, in English often incorrect Jan Jansson) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam in the 17th century.nnJanssonius was born in Arnhem, the son of Jan Janszoon the Elder, a publisher and bookseller. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. Elisabeth Hondius died in 1627 and he remarried one Elisabeth Carlier in 1629. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of … [Click Below for Full Description]

REGIUS, Henricus.
Amsterdam: Elsevier, 1654. First edition (see below) of this rare and controversial work on physical, medical and natural philosophy from a Cartesian viewpoint. Among the wide variety of topics covered, there is a chapter on the circulation of the blood (p. 267 ff.), and also an interesting section on magnetism: "the illustrations [of magnets] are noteworthy, particularly the one on p. 207, which shows the lines of force around the magnet as well as the lines of induction through it" (Wheeler Gift). Regius (1598-1679) was a major figure in disputes over Cartesianism in Utrecht during the seventeenth century. He received a medical degree from the University of Padua before returning in 1638 to become a professor of medicine and botany at the University of Utrecht. A neighbour of one of Descartes' oldest Dutch friends, Renerius, Regius became intimate with Descartes, and an advocate of his views. When in the summer of 1641 a student of Regius' defended a Cartesian thesis, the new rector of the university, Gisbertius Voetius, became worried. When Regius defended a thesis in December that held that the unity of body and soul to be accidental rather than necessary, Descartes immediately recognized the danger and wrote to Regius that he had been misunderstood. But it was too late: a pamphlet war ensued and Descartes distanced himself from his old friend. In 1646 Regius published Fundamenta physics, in which he developed the Cartesian doctrine of matter and motion, including the theory of vortices. According to Regius' modern sounding definition, living bodies are those whose part … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mais incapable de canaliser la révolte populaire, trahi, il perdit la raison, peut-être empoisonné, et finit assassiné. L'histoire tragique de Masaniello a donné lieu à une nombreuse iconographie et à plusieurs œuvres littéraires.
