This book "Professes to give impartially all the materials of the secret history of the last years of James, and the earliest of Charles, and especially those concerning the actions of Buckingham, the 'Subtleties of Spain', and the 'Practises of our Home-Roman Catholics, and of some of those who were called Puritans then.' Among the papers of interest new to the public were Bacon's Considerations concerning the Queen's Service in Ireland (undated) and a large number of letters from him and others to Buckingham. The whole is a curious medley of foreign, home, Irish, and even university affairs" (Cambridge History of English Literature VII, 489). The curious title, "Cabal" took its meaning from a group of ministers of Charles II (Thomas Clifford, Lord Arlington, the Duke of Buckingham, Lord Ashley, and Lord Lauderdale), whose initial letters spelled CABAL. Antoine Aubery
Paris-Robert Denain, 1654 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of Antoine Auberys history of Francois de Joyeuse, the prominent 16th century French Archbishop and minister. Appended are several personal notes and missives, making the work especially useful to both the historian and general reader. Francois de Joyeuse was born in Carcassonne, the second son to Guillaume de Joyeuse and Marie Eleanor de Batarnay. His elder brother held some influence with King Henry II, who made him a Duke in 1581. In that same year he became Archbishop of Narbonne, despite being only 19. He inherited the Dukedom of Joyeuse in 1587, after the death of his brother at the head of the Catholic army at the Battle of Coutras. Later he supported the enemy commander, then Henry IV, and was heavily involved in the politics conducted between the Holy See and the French crown. This was the personal copy of Algernon Capell, Earl of Essex, and contains his bookplate to the reverse of the title page. Dated 1701Condition: In full mottled calf with gilt detailing to the spine. Externally sound with general shelfware and light marks of handling. The spine is a little rubbed and the spine label is missing. There are light tidemarks to the boards near the joints. The joints themselves are starting but firm. There is a bookplate anda brief numerical ink inscription to the front pastedown, which has offset. Internally lightly foxed but remains remarkably clean for its age. Firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

He published the influential nautical atlas the Zee-Atlas and the pilot guide Zee-Fakkel .In 1678 Johannes van Keulen established himself in Amsterdam and in 1680 he obtained a patent from the States of Holland and West Friesland allowing him to print and publish maritime atlases and shipping guides. These were books of maps and descriptions of itineraries, used by helmsmen for safe navigation. The patent was a kind of protection against illegal copying of produced books and charts. This was especially important for the atlases which were made with extensive initial costs. Van Keulen named his firm ?In de Gekroonde Lootsman? ('In the Crowned Pilot'). Soon Van Keulen struck a deal with cartographer Claes Jansz. Vooght.

9 Bll., 998 S. / 1108 S., 8, Leder d. - Einband berieben, bestossen u. beschabt Aussengelenke angerissen … [Click Below for Full Description]
