[Click Below for Full Description]

WARD, Seth.
Oxford: Leonard Lichfield. 1654. Small 4to. Recently rebound in full brown morocco, gilt lettering to spine; pp. 65; very good. Provenance: family copy with bookplate of a later Seth Ward to front pastedown. First edition. Seth Ward (1617-1689) was an astronomer, mathematician and Bishop of Salisbury. This was an important work in the ongoing controversy started by Thomas Hobbes's attack on the Oxbridge system in Leviathan (1651). The chemist John Webster weighed in on Hobbes's side with his Examen Academarium, which doubted the need of a university-educated clergy. This is Ward's riposte, which comes with a preface by his ally John Wilkins. It was published anonymously because of the strength of the opinions expressed, although there was a clue to the author's identity - it is signed at the end 'H.D', which are the last letters of Ward's first- and surnames. Although the book is aimed at Webster it also contains a detailed refutation of Hobbes and his contention that the universities refused to each anything beyond Aristotle: "... natural science and all new forms of knowledge are welcomed, mathematics has been considerably advanced, chemistry and magnetism are studied, and projects are afoot for establishing a laboratory for chemical, mechanical and optical researches. Those who cry out upon the university exercises in the schools close their eyes to the work done in college halls and in tutors' chambers". Ward was a founding member of the Royal Society; it is worth noting that Hobbes was never elected.

LIVY, Titus (LIVII, Titi)
Elzevier, 1654. Leatherbound. Very good. 3 vols. 578, [12]p; 651, [13]p; 676, [12]p. 14 cm (12mo) full leather bindings. Frontispiece in volume 1 (but torn in the lower corner). Loose endpapers with tears and ear marks. Main text in very good condition with unmarked text. Bindings secure with wear to leather, mostly bumps, scuffing, and small tears to the edges, hinges and corners. Tears in the spine leather and along hinge of back board of vol. 3. Considering the age, this set is in very good condition and the bindings have protected their contents. Text unmarked and pages clean. Exact reimpressions of the 1645 edition by the Elzevier family of Dutch book printers and publishers. Part of the Renaissance printing revolution that produced Aldus Manutius in Florence, Elzevier editions were not only small and portable, but important because of the clear and clean page that they produced in the printing process. This three-volume set of Livy's History is a good example of their fine work. An important example of quality early-modern printing.

ALKEMADE, Cornelis van and Pieter van der SCHELLING.
1654. Donkersloot-de Vrij 247; V. Eeghen & V.d. Kellen 473; Klaversma & Hannema 47. First and only edition of a topographical and historical description of Den Briel on the island of Voorne. Cornelis van Alkemade (1654-1737) and his son-in-law Pieter van der Schelling (1691-1751) shared a passion for collecting coins, seals, official documents, autographs and books. Van Alkemade also copied many historical documents. The present work reflects his collection on Den Briel, the city that will always be remembered for being the first to be captured by the Dutch in the 80 Years' War in 1572. Van Alkemade gives the usual historical and geographical description, which describes among other things the successive growth of the polders on the island of Voorne, and chronicles the history of the noble family that governed Voorne. The present work is especially interesting because it contains the first published text of Jan Matthijsen's famous Rechtsboek of the city of Den Briel. It was probably written between 1400 and 1423, and is one of the oldest and most important sources of for the study of Dutch law.Maps with tears in some folds, a few leaves with some names checked off and a water stain in the upper right corner of the last 25 leaves. The blind-stamped centrepiece on the front board has cut through the vellum at the upper right edge. In good condition.

Du Loir, [Nicolas].
Paris, François Clouzier, 1654. 8vo. (16), 358, (24) pp. (including final errata leaf). Small woodcut vignette to title; woodcut intitials, head and tail pieces. Modern full calf, bound to style. First edition (variant title). - A series of ten letters written from 1639 to 1641 in which Du Loir gives his impressions of Constantinople and the Sultan's court, to which the author was privy as a member of the entourage of French ambassador Jean de La Haye. The originality of this correspondence lies also in the transliteration of several Qur'an verses (letter 5) and in providing the musical source of a Turkish song. The eighth letter includes the Ottoman text (and its French translation) of an account of the conquest of Baghdad, with a bilingual translation from Ottoman into French of the several titles of the Sultan and the other dignitaries of the court. - The author spent some eighteen months in the Levant: while he was in Turkey, Sultan Murad died and Du Loir was present at the coronation of Sultan Ibrahim. He returned to Venice in 1641 after passing through the Morea; the first and the last of the letters give some account of mainland Greece and the islands. - This is the rarer (and probably earlier) variant edition, mentioned in Blackmer, with a different subtitle (instead of "contenu . sujets"). - Contemporary ownership ("G. ALKEMADE, Cornelis van and Pieter van der SCHELLING.
