Watson, Thomas.
Small 8vo (140 x 90 mm). London: Printed by T.M. for Ralph Smith, 1652. Small 8vo (140 x 90 mm), (24), 296 pp. A b B-T V (A1 blank). Contemporary gilt-stamped morocco, considerable wear to morocco and to margins of first signature, some loss to title page affecting fleur-de-lis border, binding is shaken but holding. Pencil signatures of George and Elizabeth Adams of Melbourne (probably Derbyshire) on front pastedown. An unsophisticated copy of a scarce book, likely in its original binding.First edition of an early work by the nonconformist minister, Thomas Watson (d.1686), chaplain to the Puritan Lady Mary Vere (to whom this book is dedicated), later rector of St Stephen’s Walbrook in the City of London, and ejected from there for nonconformity in 1662, just three years before the medieval structure was destroyed in the Great Fire. He was a prolific writer and popular preacher; this work ran to six editions in his lifetime. Of him the DNB notes “His early literary output was exhortatory and devotional rather than didactic” (and this work opens particularly cheerfully: “Happiness is the mark and center which every man aims at. The next thing that is sought after being, is being happy...”). “The Christian’s Charter (1652) is a paean on the privileges and delights of the Christian; inter alia it describes the Christian’s resurrection body as ‘enamelled with glory’” (DNB). Only four other copies of the first edition located: British Library, Colombia, Huntington, and Yale. ESTC R209213. Wing (2nd ed.) W1111.

Max. authoritate recognita. Nunc vero iussu cleri gallicani denvo edita. Amsterdam,: Joan and Cornelis Blaeu, 1652. Amsterdam,: Joan and Cornelis Blaeu,, 1652. 1642. 4to. (205 by 160mm), [9] ff. 277pp., numerous diagrams and woodcut illustrations within text, contemporary marginalia to title and a few leaves, some light dampstaining, final leaf with lower part cut off, contemporary vellum, title in manuscript to spine. Scarce first French edition of the great cartographer's handbook to his famous globes and spheres, published by his sons Joan and Cornelis. The master globe-maker, who had recently produced the largest globes in the world to date (68 cm in diameter), authored the Institution Astronomique so that his customers might get the most out of their celestial and terrestrial globes. Blaeu gives a detailed explanation of the various parts of a globe, followed by a series of nearly 150 exercises. By positioning your terrestrial globe as Blaeu directs, it is a simple matter to determine the time in different parts of the world, or to ascertain the length of a day in your hometown of Amsterdam at any given season. There are exercises for both the celestial sphere concerning the ascendancy of certain constellations and the terrestrial globe locating a town in Indonesia given its coordinates or utilising rhumb lines to learn about navigation. The Institution Astronomique is divided into two parts, the first following the improper hypothesis of Ptolemy, the second following the true Copernican hypothesis, similar in arrangement to Galileo's Dialogo. Blaeu explains that he devotes a great many pages to the Ptolemaic system only because it is si … [Click Below for Full Description]

PALLAVICINO, Ferrante
Artikeldetails Le due Aggrippine. PALLAVICINO, Ferrante. Venetia, Appresso li Guerigli 1652. kl.-8°. 407 S. Pgmt. d. Zt. JANSSONIUS JOANNES
Incisione in rame, mm 385x488, colorata a mano. Perfetto esemplare marginosissimo.

"John Scapula was on the staff of the author and printer, Henri Estienne, whose great Greek Thesaurus was published at Geneva in 1572. Estienne had spent twelve years of his life in research on this work and in consequence it had to be very costly. Scapula decided to leave the firm and on doing so 'lifted' much of Estienne's material, which he incorporated into his own great lexicon, first published at Basel in 1580, at a cheap price. Scapula's work went through edition after edition, whereas the real author's work 'hung fire' and he was practically ruined" (Maggs Catalogue 891, item 382). "The two editions of 1652 are the most esteemed, and sell at a very high price - from their extraordinary rarity" (Dibdin).

An absolutely incredible 17th-century German geography book filled with maps, city plans, and engravings "covering events in Europe through 1651. This first edition was the first edition printed by Schleder and is one of the very few editions of this book to ever see multiple reprints. This was also the first edition to see print after the death of the series' founder, Merian. This edition was intended to the sixth and final edition, but because of popular demand, another volume was written 11 years later, again by Schleder. While the content is incredible and historically accurate, the copper engravings have always been the strongest appeal, even in the 17th-century. Matthäus Merian der Ältere (1593 - 1650) was a Swiss-born engraver who worked in Frankfurt for most of his career, where he also ran a publishing house and was most known for his German-language history book "Theatrum Europaeum." Theatrum Europaeum was a journal on the history of the German-speaking lands by Matthäus Merian. VISSCHER, Claes Janszoon.
Amsterdam, 1652. Original colour. 445 x 560mm. Restoration to margin and centre fold. This magnificent planisphere manages to include 30 separate illustrations in its panels. Along the top and bottom are equestrian portraits of the Twelve Cæsars of Tacitus. The four corners feature female allegorical figures of the Continents, with Europe as a shepherdess, Asia seated on a camel, Africa on a crocodile and America on an armadillo! The left border has prospects of Rome, Amsterdam, Jerusalem and Tunis, interspersed with illustrations of European, Asian and African dress. The right border is given over completely to America: the prospects of Mexico City, Havana, Pernambuco and Todos os Santos Bay are separated by vignettes of North American natives, South Americans and the giants of the Magellan Strait. Originally published in 1639, most of the cartography has been copied from Blaeu, although Arctic America has been extended, as has the St Lawrence River. This state has the date 1652, the year of Visscher's death, added. SHIRLEY: 350.

Oughtred "exercised a formative influence on a host of young men with a mathematical bent, alike at the university level and at the instrument maker's bench" (Taylor, Practitioners, p. 192), notably including Christopher Wren, John Wallis, Seth Ward, Jonas Moore and Charles Scarborough. One of Oughtred's pupils, William Forster, visited him at his rectory at Albury, Surrey in 1630, and persuaded him to let him translate and publish his Latin treatises. 1. Porta, Giovanni Battista [Giambattista] della; Antonius Polemo (attrib.); Giovanni Ingegneri.
Sebastian Combi & Gio. LaNoù, 1652. Della Porta's influential work on physiognomy, originally published in 1586 as De humana physiognomonia. Here, the author seeks to categorize similarities between visible external physical characteristics and the traits of the soul or character hidden within -- formalizing a pseudo-science that continues (in assorted variations) to find adherents even today. The human physiognomy treatise is followed by its celestial counterpart, and then, as issued, by the Fisonomia di Polemone (although attributed to Polemo, actually a Byzantine forgery) and the Fisonomia naturale of Giovanni Ingegneri. The two Italian-laguage della Porta texts are illustrated with => numerous in-text copper engravings: These remarkable vignettes include, along with a sequence of individual animals and humans, a series of => side-by-side comparisons of human facial types to various types of animal, offered as examples of Porta's determinations: "The horse is a noble animal, therefore it is a sign of nobility to walk erect with the head held high. Men who resemble a donkey are like that animal: timid, stupid, nervous. He who looks like an ostrich is akin to it in character: he is timid, elegant, vicious, stolid. Man who reminds us of a swine is a swine, eating greedily and having all the other characteristics, such as rudeness, irascibility, lack of discipline, sordidness, lack of intelligence [and] modesty. In a similar way, men who look like ravens are impudent; those who resemble oxen are stubborn, lazy, irascible; men who have lips shaped like those of a lion … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSONIUS JOANNES
Incisione in rame, mm 345x475. Perfetto esemplare marginosissimo. Copper engraving, mm 345x475; classic map of Cyprus. From "Accurata Orbis antiqui Delineatio", Janssonius' historical atlas with text by Hornius, published as volume VI of his Atlas Novus. Johannes Janssonius (1588 - 1664) was born in Arnhem, Holland. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married the daughter of Hondius. In 1616 Jansson produced his first maps influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. About this time, Jansson's name also begins to appear on Hondius reissues of notable Mercator/Hondius atlases. Georg Horn (1620 - 1670) german historian and professor, composed a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BACON, Francis
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly." ― Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. An extremely rare printing of Bacon's "Augmentis Scientiarum". This work was written mostly to help classify philosophy and the sciences. Bacon also developed his theories on the relationship between science and theology. Originally printed in 1605, this fine Leiden reissue is a highly desirable printing, with an full-page, added engraved title. While the title page does not mention Elzevier, 'Adriani Wijngaerden, 1652' was associated with the Elzevier house, in other titles as well. (Willems 1672). This is the first edition printed with this publishing name. According to Willems, "A well printed volume that joins Bacon and Elzevier and of which there are two previous editions [first printed in 1645]. Also, attractive copies" (Willems 1695). [Attributes: First Edition]
