Amstelaedami: Ioannem Blaeuw, & Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1652. Folio, 4 preliminary leaves, lexicon in 1790 columns and thus paged, 119 leaves of indices, 1 blank leaf & 366 columns; printed in greek and roman letter; title printed in red and black, woodcut initials and ornaments; title-p.;later full blindstamped polished calf, joints cracking, upper cover separated, spine darkened and rubbed; a good copy or better. "John Scapula was on the staff of the author and printer, Henri Estienne, whose great Greek Thesaurus was published at Geneva in 1572. Estienne had spent twelve years of his life in research on this work and in consequence it had to be very costly. Scapula decided to leave the firm and on doing so 'lifted' much of Estienne's material, which he incorporated into his own great lexicon, first published at Basel in 1580, at a cheap price. Scapula's work went through edition after edition, whereas the real author's work 'hung fire' and he was practically ruined" (Maggs Catalogue 891, item 382). "The two editions of 1652 are the most esteemed, and sell at a very high price - from their extraordinary rarity" (Dibdin).

[Bolivia. Viceroyalty of Peru] Rodriguez de la Cruz, Pablo.
1652. [Bolivia. Viceroyalty of Peru] Rodriguez de la Cruz, Pablo.[Manuscript Document Signed]. 16th century debt repayment by Pablo Rodriguez de la Cruz to Felipe de la Bala in Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo.[La Plata]: 1652. 1 leaf. [2 pp]. Folio [8 1/2 x 12 3/4 inches]. A very good copy, minor staining at the lower edge not affecting text. Item #44079 The amount owed of one thousand one hundred and thirty pesos and three reales is received by Manuel de Sosa on behalf of Felipe de la Bala (as his representative). The document is signed before the Mayor, Captain Cristobal Tovar y Mendoza; the Notary, Joseph Comis: and witnesses, including Sebastian Marino, Pablo de la Torre, and Francisco Ortiz, in La Plata on the 30th of October of 1652. The debtor, Pablo Rodriguez de la Cruz, was a member of some standing in La Plata society, though in 1667 he was denied "la confirmación del oficio de alférez real" of La Plata due to a debt in Los Reyes. (which may have also been the city in which Felipe de la Bala resided). Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo (then in the Province of the Charcas del Piru) is now Sucre, Bolivia. Ciudad de los Reyes was the original name of Lima, Peru. Manuscript documents from Ciudad de la Plata are quite uncommon. Alexander Giraffi / James Howell (Translator)
Printed for R. Lowndes / Printed by A. M. for Abel Roper and T, 1652. 24mo. Full Leather. First Edition. A contemporary account of the revolutions of Naples, first organized by the fisherman Masaniello. Giraffi's tale damns the agitator as a tyrant and villain of the most perfidious sort; being a biased retelling written by an Italian nobleman with obvious conflicts of interest, this work remained the authoritative account for some time, as most readers and writers reveled in the fantastic tale. The first and second parts of Giraffi's History, both translated by James Howell, bound together in one volume. The first work is one of three first printings, priority unknown, all published in 1650; the second work is the First Edition of Part II, published two years later. Part I collates complete. [6], 146, with frontispiece portraits of Genovino, Massianiello, and Gennaro. Part II lacks the first blank leaf and plate called for by the ESTC. [14], 199, [1]. Final 40 leaves of Part II chipped at the top corner, not affecting the text; Part I has occasional trimming to the top of the leaves, affecting the pagination. Previous owners' names as well as scholarly notes on the editions in pencil and ink to the front endpaper and final leaf. Previous owners are Benjamin Smith, a clock and watchmaker in the Churchyard of Canterbury, and Brent Gration-Maxfield, a modern history author. Wear to the leather binding; brown label with lettering in gilt on the spine. (ESTC R21699. ESTC R202458). Very Good binding. [Attributes: First Edition]

Max. authoritate recognita. Nunc vero iussu cleri gallicani denvo edita.

[Bolivia. Viceroyalty of Peru] Rodriguez de la Cruz, Pablo
[La Plata], 1652. A very good copy, minor staining at the lower edge not affecting text.. 1 leaf. [2 pp]. Folio [8 1/2 x 12 3/4 inches]. The amount owed of one thousand one hundred and thirty pesos and three reales is received by Manuel de Sosa on behalf of Felipe de la Bala (as his representative). SECOND EDITION of Argoli's astrological treatise, first published the same year in Padua. Argoli (1570-1657) studied in Naples and became a professor of mathematics at the Sapienza of Rome in 1622. He was replaced by B. Castelli in 1627, perhaps because of his passion for astrology. According to Thorndike, he teached Wallenstein in astrology (see Thorndike VII, 122). In 1632 he arrived in Padua as a teacher of mathematics at the University. Although follower of the Ptolemaic school, Argoli could not resist the charm of Galileo, inspiring him to write a treatise on the system of the world which he however never publish for fear of condemnation. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wodenothe, [1652 or 53?] First edition of this notable book on fruit culture, part of the growing movement during the Commonwealth towards the improvement of orchards. "The preface is by Samuel Hartlib who here states that the writer of the work was not known to him and that moreover he was unable to discover his name. However, it was said that he was 'an aged minister of the Gospel' of Loving-land near Yarmouth, who spent his leisure over a period of many years in the study of fruit culture. He wrote his treatise as the result of the knowledge he thus acquired but died before the work could be published. For himself, Hartlib claims nothing 'but the contentment to be the publisher thereof'."-Henrey, I, p. 169 & no. 167-"The British Museum's copy in the Thomason collection bears the date Feb. 1652 [i.e., 1653] in Thomason's hand on the title-page." Nicolas Sanson
Condition: Very Good. Paris: Sanson. Very Good. 1652. A very rare map from Nicolas Sanson. Imprint bears the date of 1652, although it is possible that this copy came from an atlas in the later 1600s. Light toning and edgewear, with one corner slightly chipped. Light soil on lower margin. Hand-colored boundaries. Map borders measure 14" x 20 3/4". California is shown as an island, and Terre Australe is a vague line encircling the Antarctic. Terre de Iesso is the name given to the land mass northwest of North America. Sanson (1600-1667) published many map versions of the world and is known as "the father of French cartography." 16 1/2" x 22 1/4".
