This was the first book (excluding his contribution to the 1644 volume Certain Disquisitions and Considerations) published by Seth Ward (1617-1689), then Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford, later bishop of Exeter and of Salisbury. The Essay is on the nature of God and the soul in general, but also constitutes an extensive refutation of the materialist philosophy of Thomas Hobbes, as set forth in Hobbes's Leviathan, which was first published the previous year. "The treatise itself dealt with the being and attributes of God, the soul's immortality and the truth and authority of scripture, and Ward claimed that he had composed it several years previously. Towards the end of his prefatory remarks, Ward suddenly digresses into a topical attack upon Hobbes, drawing attention to the philosopher's denial of the existence of incorporeal substances, a position at odds with Ward's orthodox defence of the soul's immortality. What follows is a carefully structured rejection of Hobbes's autho … [Click Below for Full Description]

Max. authoritate recognita. Nunc vero iussu cleri gallicani denvo edita. Published in London, printed for Humphrey Mosely, at the Princes Arms in St. Paul's Church yard; William Bentley, and Thomas Heath, in Covent-Garden, M.DC.LII (1652). As Cassandra was completed in 1650 in French, this appears to be the first published English version. Although the name of the translator is not given, it may have been Charles Cotterell. All content present, including Part I Book I - VI, Part II Book I - VI, Part III Book I-III and the continuation of Part III, Part IV Book I-VI, Part V (Ult.) Book I-V. The back end papers contain three hand written in inscriptions, one illegible, the other two reading "Cassandre / By Calprenede. 1612-1663," and "Thomas Pickering, Barnsley / Yorkshire, England." There is a high probablility that this book belonged to Thomas Pickering (ca. 1621-1679), a Benedictine lay brother who served in England during the time of recusancy. He was martyred as a result of the fraudulent claims of Titus Oates that he was part of a plot to murder King Charles II. In 1665, he was sent to London to be … [Click Below for Full Description]

(GEMOLOGY). NICOLS, THOMAS
Cambridge: Thomas Buck, Printer to the Universitie of Cambridge, 1652. FIRST EDITION. This is the first printing of the first book written in English on gemstones. Nicols (fl. 1652) prefaces his work with a warning to the reader against attempting to use gems for supernatural purposes, lest one be ensnared by the devil, and then provides a table classifying stones by size, rarity, hardness, color, and clarity. The first section of the text is devoted to a general history of origins of gems, relying on material from the works of Boethius de Boot and Pliny. Nicols then discusses ways to polish, refine, and present stones, and warns of tricks the unscrupulous may use to fool the unwary buyer. The section ends with an examination of the supernatural effects of stones, and how to tell if this is divinely or diabolically inspired. The second part of the work details the properties, uses, and value of various stones, beginning with transparent gems like diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds, and proceeding through opaque specimens like lapis lazuli and marble, then ending with common but useful stones, including flints and whetstones. There were two further English editions of the work, in 1653 and 1659, and German editions in 1675 and 1734. This is the only work by Nicols, of whom little is known apart from his association with Jesus College, Cambridge, proclaimed on the title page here. This is not an excessively rare work, but copies with contents this fine are hard to find.. 185 x 145 mm. (7 1/4 x 5 5/8"). 6 p.l., 239, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. Paris, France: Denys Bechet Paris, 1652. This is an oldie and it has bumps and bruises (See photos) It has some water stains and light foxing. It is tightly bound, in very readable condition and overall good. Have a look. This is a rare book. Continvation De L'Histoire Dv Regne De Lovys Le Ivste Treiziesme Dv Nom was published in France in 1652 by Denys Bechet, rue Sainct Iacques, au Compas d'Or, & a l'Efcu au Soleil, with the Kings permission. My French is not great, but it contains the history of Louis XIII (The Just), and France during his reign. It talks about most events during his reign including Cardinal Richelieu. Have a good look at the pictures and please feel free to ask questions. Louis XIII (27 September 1601 - 14 May 1643) was King of France from 1610 to 1643 and King of Navarre (as Louis II) from 1610 to 1620, when the crown of Navarre was merged with the French crown. Shortly before his ninth birthday, Louis became King of France and Navarre after his father Henry IV was assassinated. His mother, Marie de' Medici, acted as regent during his minority. Mismanagement of the kingdom and ceaseless political intrigues by Marie and her Italian favourites led the young king to take power in 1617 by exiling his mother and executing her followers. Louis XIII, taciturn and suspicious, relied heavily on his chief ministers, first Charles d'Albert, duc de Luynes and then Cardinal Richelieu, to govern the Kingdom of France. King and cardinal are remembered for establishing the Academie Francaise, and ending the revolt of the French Nobility. They systematically destroy … [Click Below for Full Description]

D'Abbeville, Nicholas Sanson
1652. Excellent example of one of Sanson's first world maps. From the early 1630's Nicholas Sanson, originally from Abberville, had been working in collaboration with his older compatriot Melchior Tavernier. Then, from about 1645, he entered into association with Pierre Mariette, often working from the Mariette's address in Paris. The map depicts California as an island and is one of the first to distinguish the Great Lakes, all five not being named until Sanson's 1656 map of New France. Based largely on Jesuit reports, Lac Superior and Lac des puans ('Lake of evil smells' for Lake Michigan) are here introduced but Erie ou Du Chat, identified by Boisseau in a regional map of 1643 is not named. To the south the faint outline of Terra Magellanica is retained, Australia is only partially shown and still marked Beach. Names on the west and south coasts reflect Dutch discoveries there but the remaining coastline, falling sharply south-east, is entirely speculative, Van Dieman's Land and New Zealand are omitted. This edition is identified by the date 1652 in the publication line in the lower margin. Reference Shirley 394 390mm x 550mm (15.35" x 21.65")

RUMPHIUS, G.E.
The engraving has been mounted on old paper and on the verso is written a text in English by an old hand about the importance of this famous botanist. The portrait served as a frontispiece to the first volume of Rumphius' 'Herbarium Amboinense'. He would become known as Plinius Indicus (the Pliny of the Indies). In 1652 Rumphius enlisted with the Dutch East Indies Company and took up residence in Amboina in 1653. His sight was failing and by 1670, when his great work was ready for publication, he had become blind. His bad fortunes continued when in 1674 his wife was killed in an earthquake, and in 1687 a fire destroyed his library including his original drawings. These were drawn anew by his son Paul, and in 1692 the manuscript of the first six volumes was sent to Holland for publication, but the ship carrying it was destroyed by the French. Copies of the manuscript for the complete work did not reach Holland until 1697, where it languished for 32 years in the archives of the Dutch East Indies Company. It was Jan Burmann who rescued it and prepared it for publication.
