Jansson (Jan)
1652. 45.6 x 56cm. An attractive old color first state example of Johannes Janssonius 1658 map of Japan and the surrounding lands, including an exceptional insular Korea. Centered on Japan's largest island, Honshu, this map covers from Sakhalin and Hokkaido south to Kyushu, west past insular Korea to China, and eastwards as far as the Kuril Islands. Rhumb lines fill the seas and two large decorative cartouches frame distance scales and the map's title. There are four decorative sailing ships and, just south of Honshu, a sea monster. Jansson's map is significant on many levels, including its being the first printed map to include cartography from the Maarten de Vries manuscript map, its fascinating rendering of the Kuril Islands, the joining of Hokkaido (Eso) and Sakhalin, and the presentation of Korea as an island.

CERVANTES Saavedra, Miguel de
London: R. Hodgkinsonne for Andrew Crooke, 1652. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "There is no book so bad...that it does not have something good in it." ― Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Don Quixote Miguel de Cervantes's 'Don Quixote' is without question one of the most famous novels ever written. Telling the story of a knight who ultimately loses his mind, 'Don Quixote' is a tale of chivalry and bravery. First appearing in 1605 and 1615 in two parts, this book gained fame throughout the world, so much so that English editions surfaced between 1618 and 1620. This exception 1652 English edition of 'Don Quixote' is one of the most fascinating and important printings of the work: the first folio English edition - a truly rare printing! Thomas Shelton's English was the standard English printing of this work for more than 120 years until Charles Jervas' translation appeared. [Attributes: First Edition]

Stefano della BELLA (Firenze 1610 - 1664)
Acquaforte 1652, firmata in lastra. "Etching, 1652, signed at lower right. After Alfonso Parigi. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with ""three rocks"" watermark (close to Lieure 4), with margins, perfect condition. This work depicted the festival organized in Florence, in honor of the visit of Anna of Austria, sister of Ferdinando II de Medici. The event is desdcirbed by B. Rigogli in the book "Combattimento e Balletto a Cavallo...", printed in Florence in 1652 and illustrated by three etchings by Della Bella. A very rare work. Unknown colection mark, on verso." Max. authoritate recognita. Nunc vero iussu cleri gallicani denvo edita.

Rare exemplaire.

Unknown colection mark, on verso."
[Click Below for Full Description]

[ANGLO-DUTCH WAR].
Collection of four pamphlets on the First Anglo-Dutch War, the first of the four wars between England and the Dutch Republic, caused by disputes over trade and fought entirely at sea between 1652 and 1654.The first pamphlet starts as a conversation discussing the unfortunate skirmish between the Dutch Admiral Maarten Tromp and the English Admiral Robert Blake and the upcoming war with England. The well-informed merchant brings up the seven articles the English proposed to regulate the trade and also the 36 articles the States-General offered as a counter proposal. The second pamphlet is the first edition of a follow-up to the previous conversation with the same three men. They talk about the courage of Admiral Tromp and the reluctance of the English to meet him head on. Willems 706 ( Non solus: marq. typ. 3) "John Scapula was on the staff of the author and printer, Henri Estienne, whose great Greek Thesaurus was published at Geneva in 1572. Estienne had spent twelve years of his life in research on this work and in consequence it had to be very costly. Scapula decided to leave the firm and on doing so 'lifted' much of Estienne's material, which he incorporated into his own great lexicon, first published at Basel in 1580, at a cheap price. Scapula's work went through edition after edition, whereas the real author's work 'hung fire' and he was practically ruined" (Maggs Catalogue 891, item 382). "The two editions of 1652 are the most esteemed, and sell at a very high price - from their extraordinary rarity" (Dibdin)." Editionsgeschichte von alter Hand auf Vorsätzen notiert. Hinterer Deckel angeplatzt sonst gutes Exemplar in dekorativem Einband.

Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de
London: Printed by Richard Hodgkinsonne for Andrew Crooke, 1652. Second edition of the first English translation of Cervantes' masterpiece. Folio, bound in full contemporary calf with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in five compartments within raised gilt bands, quadruple gilt ruling with cornerpiece flourishes to the front and rear panels, woodcut devices to the titles, woodcut initials and headpieces. Translated from the original Spanish by Thomas Shelton, his first English translation published in 1612 was the first translation in any language, and took him only forty days to complete. The true first edition of Don Quixote appeared in two parts in 1605 and 1614. The first part of Shelton's first English version was published in 1612; with the second part was added in 1620, both published in quarto. The present volume is the first single-volume Shelton edition, and is the first folio edition. In near fine condition. Period ownership inscription to the title page. An exceptional example, the nicest we have seen. Often cited as the first modern novel, Cervantes' masterpiece Don Quixote remains not only the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age, but the most important work of the entire Spanish literary canon. The Shelton translation is generally considered the English translation that "realizes Cervantes' manner more nearly than any successor." (DNB). "It is interesting to realize that the first modern novel was composed by a sick, aged and impoverished man, who believed that a satirical tale might produce more revenu … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINTO, Fernão Mendes and Jan Hendrik GLAZEMAKER (translator).
Second edition of a translation into Dutch of the travels of the Portuguese explorer Pinto through Asia. Over a period of 21 years Pinto travelled to Africa, India and China and even claimed to have been in Tibet. By his own account he was the first westerner to enter Japan. Although the historical accuracy of his account is debatable, his story is highly entertaining and remained very popular for long after his death. The first edition in Dutch was published in 1652 and translated by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker, most famous for his translations of the works of Descartes. Glazemaker, who did not know Portuguese, based himself on an earlier French translation by Bernard Figuier. Instead of providing an accurate translation, he edited the text to conform to the radical enlightenment ideals of Spinoza, supported by himself and his publisher. This stripped Pinto's travels of most of the Catholic elements, including miracles and saints. "Glazemaker excludes what cannot be explained from a scientific perspective" (Couto). What remains is the image of the ruthless Portuguese who used faith to justify their cruelty and greed. Contrasting with them is the book's description of a utopian China in which religions harmoniously coexist. The back of the engraved title-page, letterpress title-page and first page of the introduction were used for a writing exercise. The main allegorical figure of the engraved title-page has been perforated at the edges and the 14 following leaves, including the letterpress title-page and one engraving, contain small, nearly invisible perforations. With a restore … [Click Below for Full Description]
