Typis Du Gardianis[Jansson]|& Adriani Vlacq. - Typis Du Gardianis[Jansson] & Adriani Vlacq, Londini [Amsterdam] & Hagae-Comitum 1652 - 1655, Pet. in-12 (7,5x12,6cm), 278pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

NICOLS, Thomas.
Ferguson, Bib. Chem. II, p. 138 note; Sinkankas 4757; VD 17, 3:302273B. First edition of the German translation of A lapidary, first published in English in 1652 and compiled by Thomas Nicols: ''the first independent gemological book by a British author ... based firmly upon Boetius de Boodt'' (Sinkankas). Nicols lists all the true gems, but also covers fossils, coral, pearls, amber, etc. For each he discusses the forms, appearance, properties (diligently but somewhat sceptically reporting magical, mystical and medical claims), origins, classification, uses, prices, engraving on gems, etc. For pearls he informs us that "the best are found in the Persian Gulf" (English edition), especially near what is now called the Strait of Hormuz (Ormus). He also mentions several other spots in the Arabian Peninsula and Egypt where various gems can be found. Nicols makes an intelligent synthesis of the earlier literature, as well as original contributions primarily in practical aspects related to jewellery, such as enhancing stones with reflective foils or dyestuffs, hardening softer stones, and the related subjects of falsification and adulteration.Browned throughout, otherwise a good copy.

Second edition. 8vo. (xiv), 366, 84 pp. Recent full calf, gilt lettered to the spine. Wanting the frontispiece called for in some copies of this edition. Some marginal staining, though generally very good. Wing, C685. A reprint of Bayly's account of the Royal conference (originally published in 1649) coupled with the Cartwright's rejoinder, criticising Bayly for "giving a false report favorable to the Catholic Church" (ESTC). Copac is more equivocal, only mentioning the frontispiece in some of the copies it provides collations for.

Evelyn, John
Third edition of "Evelyn's most important horticultural work" and the first official book publication of the Royal Society. In 1652 the diarist and translator John Evelyn (1620-1706) "began to create the garden at Sayes Court, a project that signaled the beginning of his serious interest in botany and garden history" (ODNB). He developed an extensive correspondence with gardeners throughout Britain and devoted much of his intellectual energy to horticulture, particularly that of trees. The outcome was this pioneering work, written in part as a "protest against the destruction of England's forests being carried out by her glass factories and iron furnaces. The work was influential in establishing a much-needed program of reforestation that had a lasting effect on the British economy" (Norman 745). Sylva also introduced the term "avenue" into English landscape gardening. Published with this edition is the second edition of Terra, A Philosophical Discourse of Earth; the third edition of Pomona, a collection of treatises on fruit trees and cider-making, and the fifth edition of the Kalendarium Hortense, a gardener's calendar that was frequently published separately and proved to be Evelyn's most popular work. As it was deliver'd in the Royal Society the XVth of October...Terra, A Philosophical Essay of Earth... to which is annexed Pomona: or, an Appendix Concerning Fruit-Trees in Relation to Cider... also Kalendarium Hortense; or, the Gard'ners Almanac... All which several Treatises are in this Third Edition much Inlarged, and Improved. Folio (296 x 185 mm). Late 18th-century … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHYNVOET, Simon.
1652. Berlin Kat. 3398 (2); Springer p. 42 (together with Schynvoet's series of vases, etc.); Thieme-Becker 30, p. 393. Beautiful print-series of elaborately decorated monumental columns designed as garden ornaments by Simon Schynvoet (1652-1727), a Dutch garden architect and art collector, many with coats of arms, portraits, historical or allegorical figures, views, etc. Many are anonymous and probably intended as general models, but 10 (including the title-plate and dedication-plate that serve as prints 1 and 2, were designed to commemorate specific events or people. Most of these are dated: 1689 (the Prince of Orange when crowned King William III of England) and 1697-1704 (including the radical theologian Balthasar Bekker, with a caricature medallion portrait), so the series was probably issued in that year or very soon after. The plates were engraved by his son, the draughtman and engraver Jacob Schynvoet (1685-post 1733), and by Jan Goeree (1670-1731), the most sought after engraver and book illustrator at the beginning of the 18th century. With the title-print somewhat foxed, but otherwise in good condition and untrimmed, preserving the deckles. A splendid series of garden art prints.

SANSON, Nicolas
Paris, 1652. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand outline color. Image measures 14 x 16.5%u201D. This map of southeastern France includes the erstwhile provinces of Dauphiné, corresponding roughly to the present departments of Isère, Drôme, and Hautes-Alpes, as well as parts of Savoye and Bresse. At the time of the map%u2019s publication in 1652, Dauphiné was under the absolutist rule of King Louis XIV. The cartographer Nicolas Sanson, as Royal Geographer to Louis XIV as well as Louis III, likely understood the importance of this region to French interests of the time. The map thusly provides ample detail about the area, including cities, rivers, mountains, and significant forts. Hand-colored outlines indicate political boundaries. An elegant cartouche in the upper right corner of the map displays the title amidst scrollwork topped with the crown of the French monarchy. The map is in very good condition with full margins and no chips or tears. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness, Sanson favored minimal details, focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. This map points to his significant role within the French monarchy.
