Horn's On American Origins "traces the supposed original sources from whence the North American Indians were derived." There was a strong contemporary argument as to North American Indian origins, with Hugo Grotius suggesting most of the population came from Scandinavia. Horn wrote this work as a rebuttal to Grotius and in support of Joannes de Laet. In this work he surveys the different opinions of American origins. Horn proposes a diffuse settlement of the Americans and ultimately suggests a land bridge from Asia over the Bering Strait. Horn references early travels to and accounts of America. He also discusses of the Huron and Iroquois tribes of Canada.
Sabin 33014; Palau y Dulcet 116199; Alden/Landis 652/111; Field 717.
Provenance: Sign on title "James Gardiner, Eman. [Click Below for Full Description]

This 1652 edition contains, beside the Essays, the long preface and dedication of de Gournay, the preface of Montaigne, a summary of his life, references to the authors in the margin, and translations of the passages quoted. These citations, often very lengthy, make the Essays not only one of the great philosophical investigations in the Western tradition, but a storehouse of the most beautiful and profound passages of classical literature. His citations from classical authors, including Lucretius are especially remarkable. The whole is preceded by a notice of Estienne, in which he details the improvements he has made in this edition, most notably by placing the translations opposite the text – the first time this a … [Click Below for Full Description]

NICERON, Jean François (1613-1646) and Marin MERSENNE (1588-1648)
Paris, la veufve F. Langlois, dit Chartres, 1652; 1651. Two parts in one vol, folio (343 x 230 mm), pp [xvi, including frontispiece and portrait] 191 [1]; [xii] 134, with engraved frontispiece, portrait, and 50 plates, one double-page; a fine copy in contemporary French calf, gilt fillets on sides, gilt panels on spine, head and tail of spine a little worn. Third editiion (first 1638) of Niceron’s work, and first edition of Mersenne’s treatise on optics and catoptrics. Niceron’s book on perspective and anamorphic projection is divided into the traditional three divisions of optics, concerning direct light, catoptrics, dealing with reflected light, and dioptrics, dealing with refracted light. ‘Although aware of the latest theoretical developments, Niceron concentrated primarily on the practical applications of perspective, catoptrics, and dioptrics, and on the illusory effects then traditionally associated with natural magic. The first [book] presents briefly the fundamental geometrical theorems that are necessary for what follows; it then develops a general method of perspective collineation, borrowing heavily from Alberti and Dürer. Book II, which is addressed to the problem of establishing perspective for paintings executed on curved or irregular surfaces (for example, vaults and niches), presents a general technique of anamorphosis; that is, the determination of the surface distortions necessary to bring a picture into perspective when viewed from a given point. Book III discusses the anamorphosis of figures that are viewed by reflection from plane, cylindrical, and coni … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSONIUS JOANNES
Incisione in rame, mm 430x488. Perfetto esemplare marginosissimo. Copper engraving, mm 430x488; classic map of mediterranean islands. From "Accurata Orbis antiqui Delineatio", Janssonius' historical atlas with text by Hornius, published as volume VI of his Atlas Novus. Johannes Janssonius (1588 - 1664) was born in Arnhem, Holland. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married the daughter of Hondius. In 1616 Jansson produced his first maps influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. About this time, Jansson's name also begins to appear on Hondius reissues of notable Mercator/Hondius atlases. Georg Horn (1620 - 1670 … [Click Below for Full Description]
