        Le due Aggrippine.

Venetia, Appresso li Guerigli 1652. kl.-8°. 407 S. Pgmt. d. Zt. The Historie of the Holy Warre The Holy State The Profane State

London : Printed by R D forJohn Williams, 1652 A fair copy of Thomas Fuller's Historie of the Holy Warre, bound with his Holy State and Profane State. Classed as 'fair' because the binding has wear and the Holy Warre has a very old replacement title page and lacks the 'declaration of the frontispiece'. With folding map, decorative frontispiece/title page, and 20 engraved portraits and decorative initial capitals. The full leather binding has contemporary calf boards which have reinforced and repaired corners to the front board, and worn corners and edges to the back board. A new spine was added, probably in the 1800's and this is worn with some splitting to spine joints - particularly at the front. Internally there is a bookplate of Chelsea Public Libraries to the front pastedown with a note that this book was donated by Mrs Rutson. Contents: folding map (some repair); decorative frontispiece/title page (with browning, some dog-earing, and trimming); hand-drawn replica title page - including a very good drawing of the crown - which assumes that the edition is the 3rd edition - when it is probably 4th; text in 5 books - 286pp (browning to some sections, p207 with wrinkled edges; some spotting in Bk V); Preface to the Chronologie 1p; Table 20pp; Catalogue of authors 2pp; table index 6pp; Finis. Blank leaf. Decorative title page - The Holy State 1648; further title page - 3rd edition 1652; To the Reader 2pp; Index 2pp; text in 4 books with 17 engraved portraits (some damage to side margins with no text loss pp 17-33, Chelsea stamp to bottom margin p100, p122 some spot damage has affected small areas of text); title page 'The Profane State' 1652; text pp 343-510 with 3 engraved portraits (Chelsea stamp in margin p510); Finis (some staining to the bottom page edges of Profane State can be seen in bottom margin from time to time).

? A-H? I-K? L . Roman letter, some Italic. Cramoisy’s woodcut device on title, woodcut initials and headpieces, typographical ornaments. Light age yellowing, some light browning and spotting. A very good clean, entirely unsophisticated copy in contemporary limp vellum. Important and extremely rare first edition of this account by the Jesuit missionary Paul Ragueneau of the mission in Canada, including a highly important description of the mission and travels of Father Buteaux. After having been the subordinate of Jean de Brébeuf and Jérôme Lalemant for eight years, Father Ragueneau became superior of the Huron mission in 1645. We owe to him the "Relations des Hurons" for 1646, 1647, 1648, that of 1649 which recounts the destruction of the mission and the martyrdom of Fathers Brébeuf and Gabriel Lalemant, and that of 1650 which describes the ardours of the winter spent at Île Saint-Joseph (Christian Island) and the emigration and resettlement of the Hurons under the protection of the fort at Quebec. This work is of particular importance as it records the state of the missions in New France after the defeat of the mission by the Iroquois nation. The second part is the journal of the travels of Father Buteaux to the Attikamegues. Buteaux was a French-born Jesuit who came to Canada in 1634 and was assigned to Trois-Rivières, where he ministered until his death in 1652. "The annihilation of the Huron missions in 1649 induced the missionary to reply to the pressing invitations extended by the Attikamegues who were established in the upper St. Maurice basin. "In all these regions," wrote Buteux, "there are many other Tribes, – more than we can baptize, even if we had still forty years to live; and those people have no intercourse with us. It is from them that the Hurons, before their own country was desolated, obtained nearly all their Beavers, – the supply of which, being no longer diverted elsewhere, will now come to our French settlements, if the Iroquois do not disturb our repose." On 27 March 1651 Father Buteux, accompanied by two Frenchmen and some 40 Attikamegues, undertook the journey northward. The expedition lasted three months. The travellers reached regions inhabited by tribes who had had no contact with white men. Wishing to go as far as Hudson Bay the following year, Father Buteux had presents sent "to the Captains of some Tribes further to the North." On 18 June 1651 he was back at Trois-Rivières. During July he set out on a mission in the direction of Tadoussac and Gaspé. At the end of the account of his journey to the source of the St. Maurice, the missionary had expressed his desire to push on further with his evangelizing explorations: "I hope next Spring to make the same journey, and to push still further toward the North Sea, to find there new tribes and entire new Nations wherein the light of the faith has never yet penetrated. Since that journey, the Iroquois have entered that country which seemed almost inaccessible" (Lake Kisagami). In a letter to Father Ragueneau he added: "I would never have thought that they could have found or reached that lake with their canoes. On the journey that I made to these regions, we walked about twenty days on the snow, before coming to it." Dictionary of Canadian Biography. He died a few months after this account during his following mission journey. His party was attacked by a troop of Iroquois lying in ambush. He was shot and tomahawked. An excellent copy of an exceptionally rare and important work. BM STC Fr. C17th p. 269, J213. Sabin 67498 JFB. R13 French [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Kolberg ( Colbergh ) .

He lost a high-profile struggle with the Jesuits in New Spain, resulting in a recall back to Spain, to the minor Diocese of Osma in Old Castile.

These two views illustrate the Dutch attack on the Portuguese city of Olinda in 1630. - Throughout most of the 17th century Portugal and Holland had a commercial agreement in which the Portuguese colonies in the New World produced sugar, and the Dutch distributed it across Europe using their vast commercial network. - After the kingdoms of Portugal and Spain merged, the Dutch lost their distribution monopoly and created the West Indian Company in 1621. - Shortly thereafter the Dutch began its attack on Pernambuco, first at Salvador and then at Olinda. - At top is a view of Povo (which later became Recife) and Olinda as seen from the sea. - At bottom is a large bird's-eye view of the region filled with ships, some engaged in battle, and the city of Povo already engulfed in flames.

- First French edition of this first-hand account of 17th-century Vietnam (first Italian ed. 1650), which played an important role in fostering French interest in the region. Rhodes, who earned the favorable opinion of Louis XIV, is often heralded as the founder of Vietnamese Christianity, and remembered for his important dictionary of Latinized Vietnamese. The Relation was written from Macao in 1645, and published in Italian when Rhodes returned to Rome in 1650. "Part I of Rhodes’s relation provides A VALUABLE ETHNOHISTORY OF TONGKING; Part II relates the history of the Jesuit mission there. Rhodes also published an Annamite-Latin-Portuguese dictionary, presumably for the use of his successors in Vietnam, and a Latin-Annamite catechism for the converts HIS PUBLISHED WORKS WERE TO BECOME FOUNDATION STONES FOR THE MISSION EDIFICE OF INDOCHINA ERECTED DURING THE LATTER HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY" (Lach, III.1.381).Throughout his sojourn in Rome, Rhodes campaigned to his superiors about the need to dispatch capable bishops to Indochina. He felt strongly that the order’s future lay not in China, but in Indochina, where the mission could be expanded with the aid of a faithful native clergy. In 1652 Pope Innocent X sent Rhodes to Paris to recruit suitable personnel. "Here he found enthusiasm and financial support for a new mission under French leadership in court circles, in the Assembly of the Clergy of France, and among the French Jesuits After the Fronde, the young Louis XIV became interested in the travels of his subjects overseas, and looked favorably upon Rhodes’s activities" (Lach, p. 408) Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660) was born in Avignon, entered the novitiate in Rome, was ordained in 1618 and shortly thereafter went on his first mission. Originally destined for Japan, he arrived at Macao in 1623, and was then sent instead to southern Vietnam, where he managed to preach to the indigenous people in their own language after only six months. His initial visit was curtailed when the missionaries were expelled in 1625 and his next mission was to northern Vietnam in 1627. Eventually, the animosity of the local ruler led to the ejection of all the missionaries, and in 1630, Rhodes was back in Macao, where he taught theology for ten years and baptized 6700 converts. He managed to go back to Cochinchina from 1640 to 1645, before being permanently banished. Rhodes returned to Rome in 1645, bringing with him a Chinese convert from Macao. He published this Relazione De’ felici successi della Santa Fede predicata da’ Padri della Compagnia di Giesv nel regno di Tvnchino (Rome, Luna, 1650; 4to. with a folding map). A second Italian edition appeared in Milan in 1651. The work was then condensed and translated into French by Henry Albi, S.J. with an introduction by Father Jacques de Machault in 1652. This edition was dedicated to Marie-Eléonore de Rohan de Montbazon, abbess of Trinité de Caen (d. 1682). A Latin translation, Tvnchinensis historiae libri duo 1627-46, was published in Lyons by J. B. Devenet the same year. OCLC lists one copy at NYPL; copies at Nat’l Library of Canada, BL and BNF. * De Backer/Sommervogel VI.1719.5; Brunet V.1269 (also mentions Italian ed.); Cordier, Indosinica, 1619; Stephen Neill, History of Christian Missions (1982), pp. 195-6.

Paris: Augustine Courbe, 1652 (Part I) + 1651 (Part II). 8vo. 2 parts in one volume. 12 ff. (including engraved frontispiece, title-page, Letter "aux Dames," avertissement, and the Table of Questions) + 71 ff. + 94 pp. + 2 ff. (privilege). Modern half sheepskin over marbled boards. Outer margin of the first page of the Table of Questions torn with loss of several numbers and words, paper stock somewhat browned in first two gatherings An extremely curious BOOK OF MYSTICISM AND THE OCCULT WRITTEN FOR WOMEN, apparently overlooked by the standard authorities. That the work was intended for female audiences is attested by the 10-page letter "Aux Dames" immediately following the title page. The first part contains a set of DIVINATIONS with a list of 71 questions to ask the ORACLE, with 71 sheets each containing 16 responses (one for each quadrant of the wheel of fortune represented on the frontispiece), a total of 1136 answers possible for each question. At the end of the questions are printed 10 lines where the inquisitor can write questions for to the oracle. The rules of "The Game" are explained in a prophetic warning. First printed in 1647, our copy belongs to a slightly later edition, likewise printed by Augustine Bent, and features the same spectacular engraved frontispiece. The second part, likewise printed by Augustine Courbe but dated 1651, presents a 94-page analysis of the curious symbolism of COLORS, MYSTICAL SYMBOLS, the MEANINGS OF LOVE, ARMORIAL DEVICES, etc., all of which can be explained by any kind of TREES, HERBS, and FLOWERS. The extraordinary frontispiece depicts FORTUNA at her Wheel, below which are six inquisitors (male and female) in attendance. REFERENCE: Caillet No. 11540 was unable to locate any early editions.

Rome: Appresso Filippo De'Roffi, 1652. $ 2250.00 Third Edition of this popular guide to the Eternal City which was printed throughout the seventeenth century. A sister volume by the same author Ritratto di Roma Antica..., published in several editions around the same time, offered a guide to Ancient Rome, while the present volume offers the reader a window into Baroque Rome. The contents of churches, libraries, museums, etc. are described in detail, along with architecture and surrounding gardens. The somewhat unsophisticated engravings lend a particular charm to the volume. Also of numismatic interest, the woodcut medallions mostly represent Roman coins. Some marginal waterstaining, toward the end, a near fine copy. Rossetti, G-766. Fossati Belani 695.
