The Life of the Renowned Sr Philip Sidney....

London: For Henry Siele, 1652. First Edition. 12mo in 8s. ....With the true interest of England as it then stood in relation to all forrain princes: and particularly for suppressing the power of Spain stated by him. His principall actions, counsels, designes, and death. Together with a short account of the maxims and policies used by Queen Elizabeth in her government. Two engraved portrait frontispieces, one mounted of Sidney and another of Greville bound in. [4]247pp. with spurious pagination but all catchwords matched and complete. " The 'Life', though written apparently ca. 1610 and perhaps revised later, was not published until twenty-four years after Greville's deah. It is not so much a biography as an historical survey by a disillusioned politician of an earlier and less corrupt time when Elizabeth, though not faultless, was unswerving in her determination to make England great, and Sidney, of all too brief a period, stood above all others as the militant champion of European Protestantism." (English Literature in the Seventhteenth Century, Bodeleian Library, 1957).A hansome copy, rebound in 20th century England, in full brown polished calf, raised bands, one compartment lettered in gilt, endpapers renewed. A lovely copy displaying no foxing, but just a hint of toning. Very nice.

The History of The Valorous and Witty-Knight-Errant, Don Quixote, of the Mancha Bound With The Pleasant Notes Upon Don Quixot

London: Printed by Richard Hodgkinsonne, for Andrew Crooke, 1652. Two works bound in one volume. Quarto, full brown leather, gilt tooling and titles to the spine, gilt device to the front and rear panel, raised bands. Bound with the first edition of Edmund Gayton's Pleasant Notes Upon Don Quixot, which was published in 1654. Three title pages (The History being divided in two parts) with woodcut devices, ornamental head- and tail-pieces, and large decorated initials. In very good condition with some toning to the text. The Pleasant Notes Upon Don Quixot was a commentary on Cervantes, with three early references to Shakespeare. Repeatedly Gayton departs from its subject to introduce colorful anecdotes of contemporary London. Shakespeare is named in a list of English writers on p. 21; on p. 95, Don Quixote is called "The Shakespeare of the Mancha. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself, with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire, Sancho Panza, they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years, it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers, from Dickens to Faulkner, who once said he reread it once a year, "just as some people read the Bible". Vladamir Nabokov is quoted as saying, "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. [He] looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through [his] sheer vitality... He stands for everything that is gentle, forlorn, pure, unselfish, and gallant. The parody has become a paragon."

Paris: Sanson. Very Good. 1652. A very rare map from Nicolas Sanson. Imprint bears the date of 1652, although it is possible that this copy came from an atlas in the later 1600s. Light toning and edgewear, with one corner slightly chipped. Light soil on lower margin. Hand-colored boundaries. Map borders measure 14" x 20 3/4". California is shown as an island, and Terre Australe is a vague line encircling the Antarctic. Terre de Iesso is the name given to the land mass northwest of North America. Sanson (1600-1667) published many map versions of the world and is known as "the father of French cartography." ; 16 1/2" x 22 1/4" .

Amsterdam, printed for Jan Rieuwertsz I and Jan Hendricksz Boom, 1653. 4to. With an engraved title-page and 7 engraved plates. Modern vellum.

STCN (2 copies); Cordier, Japonica, col. 38; Cordier, Sinica, col. 2067; Couto, The marvellous travels of Fernando Mendez Pinto across the Low Countries; Thiele 193. Second edition of a translation into Dutch of the travels of the Portuguese explorer Pinto through Asia. Over a period of 21 years Pinto travelled to Africa, India and China and even claimed to have been in Tibet. By his own account he was the first westerner to enter Japan. Although the historical accuracy of his account is debatable, his story is highly entertaining and remained very popular for long after his death. The first edition in Dutch was published in 1652 and translated by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker, most famous for his translations of the works of Descartes. Glazemaker, who did not know Portuguese, based himself on an earlier French translation by Bernard Figuier. Instead of providing an accurate translation, he edited the text to conform to the radical enlightenment ideals of Spinoza, supported by himself and his publisher. This stripped Pinto's travels of most of the Catholic elements, including miracles and saints. "Glazemaker excludes what cannot be explained from a scientific perspective" (Couto). What remains is the image of the ruthless Portuguese who used faith to justify their cruelty and greed. Contrasting with them is the book's description of a utopian China in which religions harmoniously coexist. The back of the engraved title-page, letterpress title-page and first page of the introduction were used for a writing exercise. The main allegorical figure of the engraved title-page has been perforated at the edges and the 14 following leaves, including the letterpress title-page and one engraving, contain small, nearly invisible perforations. With a restored tear in A1, some thumbing and some water stains in the margins including a larger water stain at the bottom corner of the second half of the book; a good copy.

The Fame and Confession of R: C: Commonly of the Rosie Cross with A Praeface Annexed Thereto and a short Declaration of their Physicall Work.

Printed by J. M. for Giles Calvert at the black spread Eagle at the West end of Pauls., London 1652 - Hardcover. Small octavo. Modern brown calf-leather binding, with blind-stamped rules and devices to margins of boards, and raised bands with gilt rules and titling to spine. (lxx) + 64p. (A8 a-c8 d4 B-E8). Ornamental head-pieces and initials. The extremely scarce First English publication of what are arguably the most significant works of Rosicrucian Hermetica, the first and second Rosicrucian manifestos, the "Fama fraternitatis" and the "Confessio Fraternitatis." This edition includes an original Preface by Eugenius Philalethes (pseudonym of Thomas Vaughan; 1621 - 1666), a Welsh clergyman, philosopher, alchemist and - by reputation - a brother of the Rosy Cross, who apparently also arranged its publication. Vaughan was long thought to have translated the work himself, but Adam McLean has argued cogently in "The Impact of the Rosicrucian Manifestos in Britain," (and essay in "Das Erbe des Christian Rosenkreuz"), that it was probably actually taken from an older manuscript translation in the Scots dialect. Genuinely rare: Duveen lists a facsimile copy only; Mellon II, 102; Hall, 20; Gardner, 675. Later binding and endpapers in Fine condition, lacking first blank (A1) as almost always, a few headlines shaved, otherwise a lovely copy, the pages are fresh, unmarked and supple, and overall as close to Fine as could ever be found in a book of this vintage. A major and extremely rare work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ASIAE DESCRIPTIO NOVA IMPENSIS 1652. [Shows All of Asia: Tartaria, Mongolia, Gob

London 1652, Henrici Siele. A single sheet copper etched map. overall sheet size: ca. 47.5 x 35 cm., map size: ca 43.5 x. 34 cm., 4 old fold lines, now folded in half, original decle. edges on all sides, as issued, clean, solid image. R A R E. EARLY MID-17TH CENTURY MAP OF ALL ASIA & ALL S.E.ASIA This famous map of all Asia was executed by the celebrated engraver & cartographer, Johan Goddard [flourished 1645-71]. The map was then used in the most famous and stunning cartographic series, the "COSMOGRAPHIE" published in London, 1663. It was compiled by Dr.Peter Heylyn [1600-1662]. This series of superb atlases with maps of the whole world was the most grand scale and complete cartographic atlases of the entire world in the 17th century. A landmark and major contribution to world cartography. * The ASIAE map shows a very large geographical view of all classical Asia, from Mare Tartaricum at the extreme North to Adu Island just south of the Maldivias; from the extreme Eastern tip of Candia at the far West. just above Maris Mediterranei Paris which also shows Constanhip Polis [ancient Constantinoble] all the way East to Idos Matelotes and Duinas Colunas islands, just past the Philippines and Southeast of Japan. The map then shows fully all of Japan, its related islands, Formosa, Ryukyu [wrongly placed just below Formosa], all of the Philippines, Indonesia, Streto de Sunda and that area near Sumatra, Malayan peninsula before Singapore as listed, all of Indo-China [Cambodia, Laos & old Vietnam] again preceding the French era by 200 years, Siam, Burma and all of S.E. Asia, all of China, Tibet, Mongolia, Tartaria, the Great Wall, Corea, Central and S. Asia, Persia, Farsia, Cabil [sic], Arabian peninsula: Ayaman, Arabia Felix, Northeastern edge of Africa, all of the Holy Lands, Western & Eastern Europe, Russian, Crimea and the Steppe et al. * The map is remarkable in its great named and details of river confluences, cities, both small and large, names of mountains, lakes, and geographical features indicated such as mountains, lakes, rivers, larger cities and oceans named. For a person of the mid-17th century, this map gave a rather accurate [to the time] insight to the Asian world and its outstanding features. * While there is the usual cartographic distortion found in maps of this period, by and large it is a fairly close impression of what was where and the names are still mostly correct, as well as the 'geographic' look of the countries illustrated. That is to say this is not miles off from what is now. * COSMOGRAPHIE 1663: A rare and remarkably detailed map of the Asian continent by Johan Goddard, with the imprint of Anna Seile, Henry's widow, one of the few women to be involved in London's map publishing business. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: R.V. Tooley: TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY OF MAPMAKERES, p.249. * Color scans can be sent by email.         Kolberg ( Colbergh ) .

These two views illustrate the Dutch attack on the Portuguese city of Olinda in 1630. - Throughout most of the 17th century Portugal and Holland had a commercial agreement in which the Portuguese colonies in the New World produced sugar, and the Dutch distributed it across Europe using their vast commercial network. - After the kingdoms of Portugal and Spain merged, the Dutch lost their distribution monopoly and created the West Indian Company in 1621. - Shortly thereafter the Dutch began its attack on Pernambuco, first at Salvador and then at Olinda. - At top is a view of Povo (which later became Recife) and Olinda as seen from the sea. - At bottom is a large bird's-eye view of the region filled with ships, some engaged in battle, and the city of Povo already engulfed in flames. IX, 443. The Historie of the Holy Warre The Holy State The Profane State

London : Printed by R D forJohn Williams, 1652 A fair copy of Thomas Fuller's Historie of the Holy Warre, bound with his Holy State and Profane State. Classed as 'fair' because the binding has wear and the Holy Warre has a very old replacement title page and lacks the 'declaration of the frontispiece'. With folding map, decorative frontispiece/title page, and 20 engraved portraits and decorative initial capitals. The full leather binding has contemporary calf boards which have reinforced and repaired corners to the front board, and worn corners and edges to the back board. A new spine was added, probably in the 1800's and this is worn with some splitting to spine joints - particularly at the front. Internally there is a bookplate of Chelsea Public Libraries to the front pastedown with a note that this book was donated by Mrs Rutson. Contents: folding map (some repair); decorative frontispiece/title page (with browning, some dog-earing, and trimming); hand-drawn replica title page - including a very good drawing of the crown - which assumes that the edition is the 3rd edition - when it is probably 4th; text in 5 books - 286pp (browning to some sections, p207 with wrinkled edges; some spotting in Bk V); Preface to the Chronologie 1p; Table 20pp; Catalogue of authors 2pp; table index 6pp; Finis. Blank leaf. Decorative title page - The Holy State 1648; further title page - 3rd edition 1652; To the Reader 2pp; Index 2pp; text in 4 books with 17 engraved portraits (some damage to side margins with no text loss pp 17-33, Chelsea stamp to bottom margin p100, p122 some spot damage has affected small areas of text); title page 'The Profane State' 1652; text pp 343-510 with 3 engraved portraits (Chelsea stamp in margin p510); Finis (some staining to the bottom page edges of Profane State can be seen in bottom margin from time to time). The maps and plans by Blaeu are known for their bright engraving and uniform appearance.

? A-H? I-K? L . Roman letter, some Italic. Cramoisy’s woodcut device on title, woodcut initials and headpieces, typographical ornaments. Light age yellowing, some light browning and spotting. A very good clean, entirely unsophisticated copy in contemporary limp vellum. Important and extremely rare first edition of this account by the Jesuit missionary Paul Ragueneau of the mission in Canada, including a highly important description of the mission and travels of Father Buteaux. After having been the subordinate of Jean de Brébeuf and Jérôme Lalemant for eight years, Father Ragueneau became superior of the Huron mission in 1645. We owe to him the "Relations des Hurons" for 1646, 1647, 1648, that of 1649 which recounts the destruction of the mission and the martyrdom of Fathers Brébeuf and Gabriel Lalemant, and that of 1650 which describes the ardours of the winter spent at Île Saint-Joseph (Christian Island) and the emigration and resettlement of the Hurons under the protection of the fort at Quebec. This work is of particular importance as it records the state of the missions in New France after the defeat of the mission by the Iroquois nation. The second part is the journal of the travels of Father Buteaux to the Attikamegues. Buteaux was a French-born Jesuit who came to Canada in 1634 and was assigned to Trois-Rivières, where he ministered until his death in 1652. "The annihilation of the Huron missions in 1649 induced the missionary to reply to the pressing invitations extended by the Attikamegues who were established in the upper St. Maurice basin. "In all these regions," wrote Buteux, "there are many other Tribes, – more than we can baptize, even if we had still forty years to live; and those people have no intercourse with us. It is from them that the Hurons, before their own country was desolated, obtained nearly all their Beavers, – the supply of which, being no longer diverted elsewhere, will now come to our French settlements, if the Iroquois do not disturb our repose." On 27 March 1651 Father Buteux, accompanied by two Frenchmen and some 40 Attikamegues, undertook the journey northward. The expedition lasted three months. The travellers reached regions inhabited by tribes who had had no contact with white men. Wishing to go as far as Hudson Bay the following year, Father Buteux had presents sent "to the Captains of some Tribes further to the North." On 18 June 1651 he was back at Trois-Rivières. During July he set out on a mission in the direction of Tadoussac and Gaspé. At the end of the account of his journey to the source of the St. Maurice, the missionary had expressed his desire to push on further with his evangelizing explorations: "I hope next Spring to make the same journey, and to push still further toward the North Sea, to find there new tribes and entire new Nations wherein the light of the faith has never yet penetrated. Since that journey, the Iroquois have entered that country which seemed almost inaccessible" (Lake Kisagami). In a letter to Father Ragueneau he added: "I would never have thought that they could have found or reached that lake with their canoes. On the journey that I made to these regions, we walked about twenty days on the snow, before coming to it." Dictionary of Canadian Biography. He died a few months after this account during his following mission journey. His party was attacked by a troop of Iroquois lying in ambush. He was shot and tomahawked. An excellent copy of an exceptionally rare and important work. BM STC Fr. C17th p. 269, J213. Sabin 67498 JFB. R13 French [Attributes: Soft Cover]
