Paris: Chez l'Auteur, 1652. Handcoloured engraved map, 400 x 545 mm. (plate size); mounted. Stately double-hemisphere map by Nicolas Sanson, cartographer extraordinaire and geographer to Louis XIII. Sanson's principal historical importance lies in his role as a disseminator of knowledge: 'His maps, geographical tables and teaching captured the attention of persons no less eminent than Richelieu, Fouquet, the chancellor Seguier, and Cardinal Mazarin... The regard of such illustrés reveals Sanson as an important conduit of geographical knowledge to centres of power in France, which at this time was at its most important period of expansion in Canada, the West Indies, Africa, and the Near East' (Pedley, Imago Mundi 44).As a youth with a Jesuit education, Sanson displayed precocious intelligence and an unusual affinity for mapmaking. These valuable attributes attracted the attention of Cardinal Richelieu, then first minister of the king, who introduced Sanson to the inner circle of Louis XIII. So began a contradictory life of royal patronage and personal poverty. Sanson undertook significant financial and personal risk in coming to Paris and issued over 300 maps in the course of his career. His prodigious output and widespread prestige began a shift in European map production and heralded the end of the Dutch domination of the cartographic market during the seventeenth-century.In its depiction of the antipodes the map is vague and amorphous, demonstrating an indifferent treatment of the Dutch discoveries in Western Australia during the early seventeenth-century. As with so many world maps and globes of the era, the southern hemisphere is dominated by an imagined Terre Australe of vast proportions to offset the landmass of the northern hemisphere. A little rubbed at right-hand margin yet a lovely impression.

Collection of four pamphlets on the First Anglo-Dutch War, the first of the four wars between England and the Dutch Republic, caused by disputes over trade and fought entirely at sea between 1652 and 1654.The first pamphlet starts as a conversation discussing the unfortunate skirmish between the Dutch Admiral Maarten Tromp and the English Admiral Robert Blake and the upcoming war with England. The well-informed merchant brings up the seven articles the English proposed to regulate the trade and also the 36 articles the States-General offered as a counter proposal. The second pamphlet is the first edition of a follow-up to the previous conversation with the same three men. They talk about the courage of Admiral Tromp and the reluctance of the English to meet him head on. The conversation ends when they hear the devastating news about the storm that broke up Tromp's fleet and resulted in the loss of eleven of his ships (4 August 1652). The third item is the only edition of a letter from Admiral Tromp to the States General about his recent victory against the English fleet led by Admiral Blake on 10 December 1652, known as the Battle of Dungeness. The fourth is a pamphlet about the early naval heroism of the Dutch ca. 1440, intended as an example of naval courage to inspire those fighting in the First Anglo-Dutch War.All in good condition, with water stains on several pages of the first pamphlet and the foot margin of the third damaged by water.

        Selva militar y politica

S.l. Elementa Jurisprudentiae, Definitionibus, Regulis & Sententiis...

1652. Four Works on Jurisprudence, Military Law, Naval Law and Civil Law by an Important English Civilian Zouch, Richard [1590-1661]. Elementa Jurisprudentiae, Definitionibus, Regulis & Sententiis Selectioribus Juris Civilis, Illustrata; Acceserunt, Descriptiones Juris & Judicii, Sacri, Militaris, et Maritimi. Leiden: Apud Johannem & Danielem Elsevirios, 1652. [xii], 439 pp. Four works in one with continuous pagination. First work preceded by general title page, others preceded by half-titles. 12mo. (5" x 3"). Contemporary vellum, early hand-lettered title to spine. A few minor stains, corners and spine ends bumped, rear board slightly bowed, front free endpaper lacking, front hinge cracked, some edgewear to rear free endpaper. Light toning to text, negligible light soiling to title page. A handsome copy. * One of England's greatest civilians, Zouch was an advocate of Doctors' Commons, Judge of the High Court of Admiralty and Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford. He published treatises on a broad range of legal topics, and he is best known for his contributions to international law. The present volume contains four important treatises. Elementa Jurisprudentiae (1629) is an ambitious general study that lays out a general theory of legal science. It includes sections on the philosophy of law, civil law, military law and maritime law. The other titles develop topics outlined in Elementa Jurisprudentiae. Descriptio Juris et Judicii Sacri (1636) concerns English ecclesiastical law, Descriptio Juris & Judici Militaris (1640) addresses military law and Descriptio Juris et Judicii Maritimi (1640) deals with the law of ships and sea-borne cargo. According to Willems, some copies of this book were printed by van der Marse, de Croy and Hackius with counterfeit title pages. It is difficult to distinguish these from copies produced by the Elzeviers. Willems, Les Elzevier: Histoire et Annales Typographiques 717.

Husum, Matthias et Nicolaus Petersen, 1652. Folio. (47x32,5 cm.). Contemp. full vellum. Somewhat worn and soiled. Lacks vellum at lower compartment. First inner hinge broken. Loose in binding. Many leaves loosening, many leaves frayed in margins. Some browning throughout. Some closed tars. Text complete. Engraved ornamental title-page. (8),301,(3) pp. and 40 double-page maps and plans. All maps and plans present, some with frayed margins, 9 with some tears etc. First edition of the first full mapping of Schleswig-Holstein and the FIRST ATLAS PRINTED IN DENMARK. The offered copy is complete, both text and maps, but in poor state, browning, fraying, tears etc.The work is highly esteemed, as the mapping and surveying by the Danish cartographer Johannes Mejer showed a precision which was without competition at its time. Mejer was educated in the tradition of Tycho Brahe and Longomontanus, and in the years 1638-48 he mapped Schleswig-Holstein and published these 37 maps in Danckwerth's description of Schleswig-Holstein. These maps were the best for nearly 150 years, and were used by Blaeu and other carthographers. The Danish King, Chr. IV, urged him to proceed with his mapping of Denmark, which he did for some years, making maps of Jutland and a general map of Denmark, in order to make a Nordic atlas, but only these 37 maps were published. Because the quality of the maps was of such a high quality compared with the surveying of the day, the Younger Blaeu used these maps, made re-engravings of them and printed the whole series in his "Atlas Maior" 1662.Shirley T.Danc-1a. - Bibl.          [ANJOU] Carte générale du diocèse d'Anjou.

Small piece of the right blank lower corner of the frontispiece torn off) (Note: This is a reissue of the Latin translation only of the Greek/Latin edition of 1549 (Basel). The Greek historian and geographer Strabo of Amaseia, 63 B.C. - ca. 20 A.D, was like his example Polybius, an admirer of the Romans and their empire. He lived for some time in Rome and travelled over a great part of the known world. His historical work is lost. The greater part of his 17 books on geography has come down to us, and is by far the major work of descriptive geography to survive from antiquity. He showed little interest in purely scientific matters, and more in moral lessons. Strabo 'begins with a discussion about the size of the earth and other theoretical matters (book 1-2), ahead of his detailed treatment of particular areas, their settlements, and natural features. Strabo moves around the Mediterranean in a clockwise direction, beginning with the Iberian penisula (...). The Western and Southern part of the Asian continent receive detailed treatment, to some degree through the lens of Alexander's expedition. As recent scholars have pointed out, Strabo's geographical enterprise should be considered in close relation to his historical one, even if the latter is now lost. It is also evident that the 'pax romana' saw an upsurge of interest in universal history among both Greek and Latin authors. (The Classical tradition, Cambridge Mass., 2010, p. 392) The table of contents in the OCD (2nd edition) is more informative: 'Books 1-2: introductory. 1. Homer; Eratosthenes criticized. 2. Mathematical geography; criticism of Eratosthenes and Polybius, examination of Posidonius (especially zones); Eudoxus' voyages. Strabo's opinions on the earth; cartography on sphere and plane. 3. Spain, Isles of Sicily. 4. Gaul, Britain etc. 5-6. Italy, Sicily; the Roman empire. 7. North and East Europe, north Balkans (some is lost). 8-10. Greece (very antiquarian and mythological). 11. Euxine-Caspian etc., Taurus, Armenia. 12-14. Asia Minor (some mythology and history). 15. India, Persia. 16. Mesopotamia, Palestine, Ethiopian coasts, Arabia, 17. Egypt, Ethiopia, north Africa'. The Renaissance also saw an upsurge of interest. There was apparantly much demand for a Latin translation. 'Griechischer Geist aus Basler Pressen' records 12 editions of Latin translations till 1539. This Latin translation, first published by Schweynheim and Pannartz, dates from much earlier, from 1469. 1523 saw a revision of this translation by the German humanist and politician Konrad Heresbach, which was published in Basel. Heresbach declares that the translators of the earlier published translations were not Guarino Veronensis and Gregorio Trifernate, but that that translation tasted of (resipiscere) Theodorus Gazeus (1400-1475). This revised translation of Hesterbach was corrected once again by Henrichus Glareanus, 1488-1563, and Joannes Hartongus 1505-1579, for an edition edited by Marcus Hopperus (Hopper, Höpperli, born ca. 1520/25) in 1549 in Basel, where he was professor of Greek. For this 1549 Hopper reviewed and inspected, he tells the reader, himself the editio princeps of Aldus of 1516, and even corrected occasional mistakes (errata .. castigavi). (leaf *6 verso) Hopper recommends Strabo as the best of the ancient geographers. He even compares him with the greatest of the Greek painters Apelles)(Provenance: Manuscript prize awarded by the 'curatores' of the 'Schola Erasmiana' to Sebastiaan van der Laane, signed by the rector Joh. Silvius, dated 1693. Though young Sebastiaan received this award for his 'diligentia', when he was promoted from the 5th to the 4th class, as the first of his year, he did not leave a trace in Dutch history. We searched for Bas, Bastiaan, Sebastiaan, van der Laane, van der Laan. - Very good copy of the so-called mystic-prophetic 'Marburger Bibel', edited by Heinrich Horche, in a nice contemporary baroque binding. This edition was inspired by chiliastic and philadelphic-enthusiastic thoughts, Horche himself parted with the official Lutheran church and was regarded as a dangerous separatist. The 'Marburg Bibel' founded the pietistic genre of Bible translations with rich commentaries and was a kind of primary stage for the 'Berleburger Bibel'. - Outrageous scarce, especially in this remarkable condition.

Kolberg ( Colbergh ) .

A near Fine copy. This is a book which rather belies its title.Far from being a "Holy" work,it is in fact a book which attempts to describe how to live, giving exemplars of "good" and "bad" characters, some of them charmingly illustrated with half page engravings, including a splendid Elizabeth I and an equally splendid Joan ,Queen of Naples- the latter with her charms more readily on display. So, a good "dipping in" book with Fuller's easy style adding wit to the read.

Bel exemplaire. Mouillures marginales légères. Boutier, 84, Fac-similés, a.
