Londini (London): typis I[ohn]. H[aviland] apud Humphredum Mosley. First edition printed in England. 16mo. pp. [iv], 182, [iv], lacking the last blank. Contemporary full brown calf, front and rear boards double-ruled in blind, title page with ornate border, additional engraved title with portrait of the author. A very good copy, with early repairs to binding (interior hinges reinforced and with engraved title tipped onto a new leaf, pieces of original leather discreetly re-adhered to spine), wear to extremities and spine, some light dampstaining to fore edge not affecting text, with former owner Alexander Fraser Tytler's armorial bookplate signed "Woodhouselee" to front pastedown, Tytler's ownership signature to title page and occasional faint markings in ink noting line numbers. Presents well overall, a scarce book in an attractive contemporary binding. ESTC S112885, Gibson 58. This volume is the first edition printed in England, and second overall edition, of the epigrams of Saint Thomas More. Known primarily for his book Utopia (1516), More was a notable Renaissance humanist who worked as a counselor to King Henry VIII of England, acknowledged for his opposition to the Protestant Reformation, which earned him both an execution and a canonization (four centuries later) by the Catholic Church. This work contains More's translation of several epigrams - short, satirical verses - first written in Greek by Maximus Plenudes. Originally compiled by the scholar Erasmus and printed in 1518 by Johann Froben in Switzerland as an addition to the text of Utopia, More's epigrams were … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Davanzati, Bernardo.
[Click Below for Full Description]

IUSTINIANUS HORATIUS
typis Sac. Congr. de Fide Propaganda, 1638. Cm. 32,5, pp. (16) 455 (17). Rara edizione originale. Cfr. TACITUS.
Strassburg, (Argentorati), Ediderunt Haeredes Lazari Zezneri, 1638. 8vo. (XVIII,1123,(1 blank)) p. Vellum 17.5 cm (Ref: VD17 23:249104Z; Schweiger 2,1002; Dibdin 2,452; Moss 2,643; Graesse 6/2 9; Fabricius/ Ernesti 2,398) (Details: Fine contemporary vellum. 6 thongs laced through the joints. Engraved title, depicting an altar, left of which stands a Roman emperor, right a German warrior; on the surface of the altar the text 'Aeternitati', for Eternity; just above the altar hangs the globe, upon which stands an eagle with spread wings. This scene seems a combination of two Roman coins. It was perhaps made after the verso side of a coin struck by Constantine the Great in Trier in 321 A.D.; on this coin there is however no eagle; a scene consisting of a globe on which an eagle stands, is to be seen on a denarius of Caracalla, struck after 217 A.D.; this old eagle-and-globe symbol adorns since 1883 the escutcheon of the United States Marine Corps. This frontispiece is purely propagandistic in its presentation. It depicts not so much the struggle between the Romans and the German tribes, that Tacitus tells about.

- Etwas knittrig. Am vorderen Innendeckel Buchhändlermarke "Rudolphi & Klemm", Zürich. Vgl. VD 17, 12:126043R (Variante 1638) und 14:078634X (1639).

MURRELL, John
Printed by M. F[lesher] for Iohn Marriot, and are to be sold at his shop in Saint Dunstans Church-yard in Fleet-street, 1638. 8vo. [vi], 188, [xiv]. 3 parts in 1. Black letter, titles and prefaces in Roman. First title within double rule border, woodcut initials, woodcut and typographical head pieces and ornaments, "Mary Freeman her Book 1715" on front free endpaper, the same dated "1733" on verso. Light age yellowing, margins of title page fractionally dusty, small section torn away from blank lower margin of M4 with loss of signature letter, miniscule wormhole in upper margin, occasional marginal thumb mark. A very good copy, crisp and clean in contemporary calf, covers bordered with triple blind rule, ink stain to upper cover, spine ends worn, a.e.r. Very rare, probably second edition of this hugely important and fascinating cookery book, one of only a handful of surviving copies of any of the early editions, and one of the first cookbooks to establish cookery as a fashion, rather than simply a practical guide to running a household. The work is divided into three parts, each with its own title page, the first two on new recipes for cooking, and the third "a New Booke of Carving and sewing". In its prefaces and its dedications (to Mrs Martha Hayes in the first book and to Lady Browne in the second) the author disparages previous cookery books "the most of which nevertheless have instructed rather how to marre than to make good Meate". Murrell's work was new in that it established a new spirit of cookery as 'Fashion', and fashion as characteristic of the cosmopolitan life … [Click Below for Full Description]
