Known primarily for his book Utopia (1516), More was a notable Renaissance humanist who worked as a counselor to King Henry VIII of England, acknowledged for his opposition to the Protestant Reformation, which earned him both an execution and a canonization (four centuries later) by the Catholic Church. This work contains More's translation of several epigrams - short, satirical verses - first written in Greek by Maximus Plenudes. Originally compiled by the scholar Erasmus and printed in 1518 by Johann Froben in Switzerland as an addition to the text of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mathematicians and physicists of the later seventeenth century, Isaac Newton among them, rightly supposed that Galileo had begun a new era in the science of mechanics. It was upon his foundation that Huygens, Newton and others were able to erect the frame of the science of dynamics, and to extend its range (with the concept of universal gravitation) to the heavenly bodies' (PMM 130). 'Unable to publish this treatise on mechanics in his own country because of the ban placed on his books by the Inquisition, he published it in Leyden. Considered the first modern textbook in physics, in it Galileo pressed forward the experimental and mathematical methods in the analysis of problems in mechanics and dynamics. The Aristotelian concept of motion was replaced by a new one of inertia and general principles were sought and found in the motion of falling bodies, projectiles and in the pendulum. He rolled balls down an inclined plane and thereby verified their uniformly accelerated motion, acquiring equal increments of velocity in equal increments of time. The concept of mass was implied by Galileo's conviction that in a vacuum all bodies would fall with the same acceleration. Newton sa … [Click Below for Full Description]

1638. S. DAMASI PAPAE OPERA QUAE EXTANT ET VITA EX CODICIBUS MSS. CUM NOTIS MARTII MILESII SARAZANII Romae [Rome], Typis Vaticanis MDCXXXIIX [1638] Rare First Edition of an important book which is a compilation of the works on Christianity by Pope Damasus I (305 -384) and his life. Fundamental text on early Christianity. Bibliography of Pope Damasus I taken from Wikipedia: "He was born around 305, probably near the city of Idanha-a-Velha (in Lusitania, Hispania), in what is present-day Portugal, or near the city of Castelo Branco (also in Lusitania, now Central Portugal), then part of the Western Roman Empire. His life coincided with the rise and with the widespread legitimization of Christianity and the later adoption of Christianity as the official religion of the Roman state. Damasus is known to have been raised in the service of the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura in Rome, and following the death of Pope Liberius, he succeeded to the Papacy amidst factional violence. A group of Damasus' supporters, previously loyal to the Antipope Felix II-- a papal usurper-- attacked and killed rivals loyal to Liberius' deacon Ursinus, in a riot that required the intervention of Emperor Valentinian I to quell. Damasus faced accusations of murder and adultery (despite having not been married ) in his early years as pope. The neutrality of these claims has come into question with some suggesting that the accusations were motivated by the schismatic conflict with the supporters of Arianism. His personal problems were contrasted with his religious accomplishments, which included rest … [Click Below for Full Description]

As regards restoration, leather starts failing after 100 years depending on usage. Any large Bible exceeding this age almost invariably will need the front and back covers reattached to the body of the Bible using new leather. In this case all new archival leather has been used in the rebind. On display is a unique example of a 1638 King James Bible. This volume has had a rough life and while having been saved from the dustbin of history, it never the less shows its hard knocks. The cover both front and back were able to be saved using the original leather. It of course has been rebound. This is a one of a kind volume having survived for almost 400 years. One of the more unique and ultra rare features that make this volume one of a kind is the flowerlets impressed onto both the front and back covers on the 4 corners. Rarely has this been seen on any early 1600's Bible. Foxing is present throughout and is an expected condition of age. The cover is a deep walnut brown leather with the spine showing the title "Holy Bible" on a scarlet red leather backdrop. The spine shows 4 raised bands. Both boards and spine are firmly attached and the book is tight and put together very well. It has been rebound with new leather where existing leather was missing putting it in excellent condition. As mentioned above, archival quality leather was used in order to add longevity to the binding. The original boards were used in order to maintain the integrity of the Bible. This is a beautiful example of an early 1600's Bible. It measures 6 1/2" x 43/4" x 2 1/2" and weighs just under 2 pounds. It … [Click Below for Full Description]

General map of the West Indies extending from Virginia to the mouth of the Orinoco, and destined to be copied in various shapes by many other publishers. Title cartouche top left incorporates various local fauna. This is a derivative of Hessel Gerritsz' chart of c. 1631. The nomenclature of the North American part is virtually identical, the only notable addition being the naming of Virginia. It reflects the firsthand knowledge of Gerritsz during his voyage to South America and the West Indies undertaken in 1628.

BARENGHI Giovanni - Anti galileiana
All'interno, numerosi capolettera e sporadici grafici eseguiti a silografia. Prima edizione. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. RARE Jewish Exegetical & Apology Abravanel A rare, first Latin edition of Maimonides' 'Sepher Ha-Madah' or "The Book of Knowledge." This 1638 printing is paired with Isaac Abravanel's commentary "Liber capita fidei". These two Judaica works were edited by Wilhelm Heinrich Vorstius, a friend of Menasseh Ben Israel. Vorstius, a Christian, had trouble accepting the ideas expressed by Maimonides, even though Maimonides philosophical ideas in his works helped systematize and influence Jewish thought. Each title page includes Hebrew title above the Latin title. [Attributes: First Edition]
