Rembrandt H. van Rijn
[Amsterdam], the artist, [ca. 1638-1640]. Single leaf of laid paper (13.6 x 10.5 cm). Signed and dated upper left; verso blank, except for a light pencil tracing of the watermark. Framed in a modern passepartout (26.5 x 30.0 cm). A fine, original etching by the greatest Dutch painter and greatest etcher ever. Rembrandt shows himself full of confidence and artistic power. In 1639 ".[h]e moved to a prominent newly built house (now the Rembrandt House Museum) in the upscale 'Breestraat' (English: 'Broadway'), today known as Jodenbreestraat . in what was becoming the Jewish quarter; then a young upcoming neighbourhood. The mortgage to finance the 13,000 guilder purchase would be a primary cause for later financial difficulties" (Wikipedia). In 1640 he started to work on his magnificent The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq, commonly known as the Night Watch. This selfportrait was made and first printed in 1638; this is the second - with small improvements - of four states, with the artist's etched autograph above the left side of the cap. On laid paper with the Strasbourg Lily WR watermark - compare Hinterding, p. 417. In good condition, the printing strong; no creasing, soiling or spotting, the image uncut. Bartsch, 20; Hinterding (2006; Dutch ed. 2001) Rembrandt as an Etcher: The Practice of Production and Distribution; NHD, 170 II(IV); RvR, 24. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Aquinas, Thomas
Sumptibus Maturini Henault, Parisiis, 1638. Early printing of Aquinas' seminal work. Folio, bound in full contemporary leather with a red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, woodcut engraving of Aquinas in prayer to the title page. In very good condition with tape repairs to the title page. One of the most influential works of Western literature, the Summa of Aquinas was first published in 1485 as an instructional guide for theology students, including seminarians and the literate laity. A compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church, it presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. Aquinas conceived the Summa specifically as a work suited to beginning students: "Because a doctor of catholic truth ought not only to teach the proficient, but to him pertains also to instruct beginners. As the Apostle says in 1 Corinthians 3: 1-2, as to infants in Christ, I gave you milk to drink, not meat, our proposed intention in this work is to convey those things that pertain to the Christian religion, in a way that is fitting to the instruction of beginners." Not only has the Summa Theologiae been one of the main intellectual inspirations for Thomistic philosophy, but it also had such a great influence on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, that Dante's epic poem has been called "the Summa in verse." Bound in later 1/4 calf over marbled boards. Small 4to. 48 pages. "And thou Britain especially Scotland, my dear country, the purest portion of Christ's Church in the world this day, assure thyself, and I assure thee, for I know it, that thy good people are as sheep in the midst of wolves." P. 17. A reformed (Early Presbyterian) anti-Catholic tract by a Scottish minister. In historical context, in 1638 during the year this tract was printed by Aberthany, King Charles Star Chamber sentenced other Puritan writers and pamphlet distributors to public flogging. The King raised an army to combat the Scottish Covenanters, but finding difficulty financing it was forced to call upon Parliament. In 1639m Parliament's refusal to adhere to Royal dictates created a constitutional crisis and piled the tinder for the English Civil War. Refs: Pollard & Redgrave 72; Hazlitt II, page 2. Abernethy

The National Covenant of Scotland, 1638; Original Sheepskin Vellum Scroll,; Signed by over 100 Covenanters including the Earls of Montrose, Cassillis, Eglinton, Wemyss, Rothes, Lindsay, Lothian and Lord Blamerno. The National Covenant was written and signed in the presence of a large gathering on February 28th, 1638 in Greyfriar s Kirkyard, Edinburgh. The leading Covenanters Rothes, Montrose, Eglinton, Cassillis, et al authorized it to be dispatched by the considerable persons themselves into every shire, presbytery and parish of Scotland for signature.  The Scottish National Covenant was the result of various attempts by the Stuart monarchy to unify religious worship throughout England and Scotland. In 1637 King Charles I and Archbishop Laud endeavored to impose an English liturgy, a move that the Scots saw as little less than an attempt to reintroduce popery.  The spontaneous objection during that first service soon developed into organized opposition unified around the text of the National Covenant. The General Assemby of 1638 was composed of ardent Coventanters and two years later this Covenant was adopted by the Parliament and its subscription was required from all citizens.  Over the next few years King Charles s attempts to deter his subjects by force were unsuccessful, leading to the eventual recalling of the English Parliament an act that would begin the chain of events that led to the English Civil War. Like the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence, the National Covenant is a charter of freedom and remains an important part of our world heritage. 1638. As regards restoration, leather starts failing after 100 years depending on usage. Any large Bible exceeding this age almost invariably will need the front and back covers reattached to the body of the Bible using new leather. In this case all new archival leather has been used in the rebind. On display is a unique example of a 1638 King James Bible. This volume has had a rough life and while having been saved from the dustbin of history, it never the less shows its hard knocks. The cover both front and back were able to be saved using the original leather. It of course has been rebound. This is a one of a kind volume having survived for almost 400 years. One of the more unique and ultra rare features that make this volume one of a kind is the flowerlets impressed onto both the front and back covers on the 4 corners. Rarely has this been seen on any early 1600's Bible. Foxing is present throughout and is an expected condition of age. The cover is a deep walnut brown leather with the spine showing the title "Holy Bible" on a scarlet red leather backdrop. The spine shows 4 raised bands. Both boards and spine are firmly attached and the book is tight and put together very well. It has been rebound with new leather where existing leather was missing putting it in excellent condition. As mentioned above, archival quality leather was used in order to add longevity to the binding. The original boards were used in order to maintain the integrity of the Bible. This is a beautiful example of an early 1600's Bible. It measures 6 1/2" x 43/4" x 2 1/2" and weighs just under 2 poun … [Click Below for Full Description]

Presents well overall, a scarce book in an attractive contemporary binding. ESTC S112885, Gibson 58. This volume is the first edition printed in England, and second overall edition, of the epigrams of Saint Thomas More. Known primarily for his book Utopia (1516), More was a notable Renaissance humanist who worked as a counselor to King Henry VIII of England, acknowledged for his opposition to the Protestant Reformation, which earned him both an execution and a canonization (four centuries later) by the Catholic Church. This work contains More's translation of several epigrams - short, satirical verses - first written in Greek by Maximus Plenudes.
