GALILEI, Galileo (1564-1642)
Leiden, Elseveir, 1638. 4to (190 x 137 mm), pp [viii] 306 [recte 314] [6], with numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in text; a very clean, crisp copy in untouched contemporary English blind-ruled sheep, paper label on spine, hinges slightly rubbed and small chip to head of spine. First edition of Galileo's most important work, the foundation of modern physics. This work was Galileo's 'greatest scientific achievement ? Mathematicians and physicists of the later seventeenth century, Isaac Newton among them, rightly supposed that Galileo had begun a new era in the science of mechanics. It was upon his foundation that Huygens, Newton and others were able to erect the frame of the science of dynamics, and to extend its range (with the concept of universal gravitation) to the heavenly bodies' (PMM 130). 'Unable to publish this treatise on mechanics in his own country because of the ban placed on his books by the Inquisition, he published it in Leyden. Considered the first modern textbook in physics, in it Galileo pressed forward the experimental and mathematical methods in the analysis of problems in mechanics and dynamics. The Aristotelian concept of motion was replaced by a new one of inertia and general principles were sought and found in the motion of falling bodies, projectiles and in the pendulum. He rolled balls down an inclined plane and thereby verified their uniformly accelerated motion, acquiring equal increments of velocity in equal increments of time. The concept of mass was implied by Galileo's conviction that in a vacuum all bodies would fall with the same a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard Sibbes
London: Edward Griffin and John Okes for John Rothwell, 1638. Front Board Missing. Imprimatur Page torn and Incomplete. Text Block in good, clean condition.Spine Worn. A Glance Of Heaven. Or, A Pretious Taste of a glorious feast etc. Br R. Sibs, D.D. Master of Katherine Hall, and Preacher of Grayes Inne London. LONDON, Printed by E.G. for I.R. and are to bee solf by Henry Overton, at the entring in at Popes head out of Lumbard street. 1638. [24], 211, [5[, 59. [1[ p. : illustration (metal cut), 12mo. The text block is complete but the final imprimatur page is defective (See photographs). In addition, the front board is missing and the spine is weakened. I am not sure if this is a first or second edition. Either way, it is an extremely rare copy of an important puritan work. Sibbes was born in Tostock, Suffolk, where his father was a wheelright. He attended St John's College, Cambridge from 1595. He was a lecturer at Holy Trinity Church, Cambridge and then was preacher at Gray's Inn, London from 1617, returning to Cambridge as Master of Catherine Hall in 1626, without giving up the London position. He was the author of many devotional works expressing intense religious feeling - 'The Saint's Cordial' (1629), 'The Bruised Reed' and 'Smoking Flax' (1631) and 'The Soules Conflict' (1635) etc. Most of the other works were first published after his death. These include such beauties as 'Bowels Opened' (1639) - a volume that would surely look good on any respectable library shelf - and the 'Returning Backslider'. Sibbes' puritanism influenced many later preachers including John W … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAVENANT, W[illiam]
London: John Haviland for Thomas Walkly, 1638. First edition. 12mo. Bound in eighteenth century speckled calf with blind double ruled borders to boards, raised bands to spine with titles in gilt. Superficial repair to the front joint. A small piece clipped from the corner of the front endpaper and very tip of the corner of the first four leaves. Closely trimmed at head occasionally shaving the pagination. Wanting final blank, as usual. Overall, a very good, well preserved copy. Woodcut device to title page and woodcut head- and tailpiece devices throughout. Madagascar is Sir William Davenant's first collection of poetry and coincides with his appointment as Poet Laureate. The title poem is an epic and rather romanticised account of Prince Rupert's attempt to colonise the island. Other poems include the ode 'In Remembrance of Master William Shakespeare', supposedly written in 1618 two years after Shakespeare's death and first published here. Davenant is thought to be the godson of Shakespeare, and following the Civil War he secured a patent to establish a new theatrical company, the Duke's Company. He chiefly used this put on his adaptations of Shakespeare's play, who had by this point fallen into obscurity. In doing so he single-handedly resurrected a popular following for his plays in Restoration London. This book is extremely uncommon in commerce, with only two other copies sold at auction in the last sixty years. Pforzheimer 258; Grolier Wither to Prior 243; Bartlett Shakepeare 362 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Overbury's poem, A Wife, was published posthumously in 1614 & ran through six editions within a year, the scandal connected with the murder of the author by poison while interred in the Tower of London greatly aiding its success. It was abundantly reprinted within the next sixty years, and it continued to be one of the most widely popular books of the 17th century. Later, much was added to the gathering snowball of Overbury's works.?? Sir Thomas Overbury, close friend and adviser of King James I's favourite Robert Carr, Viscount Rochester, had objected to the proposed marriage between Carr & the newly-divorced Frances Howard,Countess of Essex warning his friend that she was "noted for her injury and immodesty." The petitioner's great-grandparents, the 1st Viscount and his wife, were staunch Roman Catholics and close to Queen Mary. Guy Fawkes served for a while in the 1st Viscount's household, and the petitioner's father, the 2nd Viscount, was in the Tower for over a year for alleged complicity in the Plot. John Browne, first appointed in 1638, was in fact a strong Parliamentarian, and served as clerk in the Lords until the house's abolition in March 1649. He was, nevertheless, re-instated at the Restoration and remained in this important post until his death.

General map of the West Indies extending from Virginia to the mouth of the Orinoco, and destined to be copied in various shapes by many other publishers. Title cartouche top left incorporates various local fauna. This is a derivative of Hessel Gerritsz' chart of c. 1631. The nomenclature of the North American part is virtually identical, the only notable addition being the naming of Virginia. It reflects the firsthand knowledge of Gerritsz during his voyage to South America and the West Indies undertaken in 1628.

Giovanni BOCCACCIO
1638. [Italian Literature] ~ BOCCACCIO, Giovanni Il decameron Di Messer giovanni boccacci cittadin fiorentino.. In Venetia [i.e. Venice]. Appresso Pietro Mari Bertano, 1638. Quarto. [16], 472 [i.e. 480]pp. Contemporary calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Extremities heavily worn, surface loss to spine and boards, splitting to joints. Inked inscription of Joannis Conradi Wolfen to foot of title-page, occasional light spotting. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), leading Italian vernacular author of both prose and poetry. The Decameron, his greatest work, contains 100 novellas of medieval allegory with many concerning love in all its forms, from erotic through romantic to plainly tragic. This edition, first printed in 1582, was done by Italian philologist Lionardo Salviati (1539-1589) at the behest of the Catholic Church to bring Boccaccio's writings into line with contemporary Christian morality acceptable to the Inquisition, the work having been placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1559 for it's anticlerical content. ~ About Antiquates We're based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beautiful Grade II Listed Georgian Building, we also travel far and wide to buy, sell and advise on rare books.
