Dale, Antonius van.
First edition: History and rationalist refutation of idolatry, including divination, demonology, astrology, exorcism, sorcery, prophecy, etc. -- in Judaism as well as in Zoroastrianism and pagan religions. Born in Haarlem, van Dale (a.k.a. Anton van Dalen, 1638-1708) was a physician, Mennonite preacher, and classicist; his efforts to dismiss the influence of the Devil and indeed the existence of virtually all things miraculous, angelic, or supernatural led to the placing of this work (along with his treatise discrediting the ancient oracles) on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1737. This volume is also of interest typographically; some of the Greek, Syriac, and Arabic types subsequently used in productions by Hendrik Wetstein and others make their first appearances here. The text is predominantly in Latin, with quotations in Hebrew and the above languages. The title-page is printed in black and red. Provenance: Front pastedown with inked inscriptions of the Rev. A.W. Miller of Charlotte, N.C., dated 1871, and of H. Ader of Assumption Hills, dated [18]92; front free endpaper with early inked inscription of Henry Joseph Thomas Drury. Drury was a master at Harrow School (where he taught Byron), and an original member of the Roxburghe Club. His inscription notes the book's passage from the Bibliotheca Heathiana "thro' Dr. Raine's hands, and Cuthell's to mine"; Drury's mother was Louisa Heath, daughter of the great collector Benjamin Heath, but most of Heath's library had originally gone either to his two sons or to auction following the death of his wife.

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huygen van (1562/3-1611)
Amsterdam: Evert Cloppenburgh, 1638. 3 parts in one volume, folio. (12 3/8 x 7 7/8 inches). Three letterpress titles [two within elaborate engraved surrounds, the third with engraved vignette], engraved portrait of Linschoten on verso of index leaf, 42 engraved maps, plates and views (including 6 folding maps and 36 engraved plates and views by Johann and Baptiste ven Doetecom after Linschoten [5 of the latter folding, 31 double-page]). (Light worming to lower inner corner, just affecting the image area of one map). Early 18th-century calf, expertly rebacked to style with the spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second the others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools, modern dark blue morocco-backed cloth, spine lettered in gilt Provenance: La Trémoille, prince de Talmont (1652-1733, arms stamped on flyleaf); armorial stamp of Serrant (on flyleaf and first two title margins) An exceptionally fine copy of this important and influential work. In terms of the condition of the contents, this copy is probably the finest that we have ever examined. It is to be preferred over the earlier English edition in that it contains 42 maps and plates as against the English edition's 12. The Wardington catalogue explains why copies of Linschoten's works are so difficult to find in even reasonable condition: they were "held in such high esteem that for nearly a century a copy was given to each ship proceeding to India for use as a guide to the sailing directions. The fact that most copies were in continual use is no doub … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pellicer de Touar [i.e., Tovar], José.
Madrid: Por la viuda de Alonso Martin Folio (28.2 cm, 11.1"). [4], 6 ff.. 1638 Known for his Avisos históricos, Pellicer — along with other literary lights — here provides encomium, history, and genealogy on the occasion of the baptism of María Teresa of Spain. The author's name is also sometimes given as Joseph Pellicer y Ossau de Tovar (alternatively Touar/Tobar), with numerous other variants seen. This is a scarce publication: OCLC finding only one holding, in the U.K. By an interesting woman printer. Removed from a nonce volume. Light waterstaining, mostly to inner corners. Trimmed closely, with shouldernotes and first or last few letters shaved in some instances. One leaf with tear from upper margin extending into text, repaired some time ago, obscuring a few words.

Selden, John
1638. Selden on the Jewish Laws of Inheritance Selden, John [1584-1654]. De Successionbus ad Leges Ebraeorum in Bona Defunctorum, Liber Singularis: In Pontificatum, Libri Duo. Leiden: Ex Officina Elseviriorum, 1638. [lx], 428 [i.e. 528] pp. 12mo. (3" x 5"). Contemporary vellum, hand-lettered title to spine, speckled edges. Light soiling, spine ends bumped, corners bumped and lightly worn. Title page, with woodcut Elzevier Solitary Man, printed in red and black, device, woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Some toning to text, minor worming to margins in a few places, light soiling to title page. An appealing copy. * Third edition, augmented and corrected. Text in Latin, some passages in Hebrew. Selden was the first great English jurists to study Jewish law seriously. First published in 1631, De Successionibus is a notable exposition of the rabbinical laws of inheritance and succession and laws concerning rabbis. It went through several editions into the eighteenth century. Dictionary of National Biography XVII:1157. Willems, Les Elzevier: Histoire et Annales Typographiques 472.

Calancha, Antonio de la
Barcelona, 1638. Folio. Contemporary vellum, calf spine with leather label. Engraved titlepage trimmed and mounted; letterpress titlepage heavily worn and repaired in similar fashion. Moderate to heavy toning, dampstaining, and soiling. Last few leaves heavily wormed, affecting some text. Small tear to edge of plate; trimmed closely and mounted. About good. First edition of this Peruvian Chronicle, one of the rarest referring to the history of Peru. It deals with the creation of the different churches and religious houses in Peru, but it also describes meticulously the most important historical events up to 1638. Born in Chuquisaca (1584), Antonio de la Calancha was an Augustinian religious man who died in Lima (1654). Our copy has the rare historiated frontispiece and the extraordinary plate representing the martyrdom of Father Diego Ortiz in Vilcabamba, engraved by Pierre de Jode. Few complete copies have survived. Leclerc's copy did not have the engraving. One of the great American chronicles.

Fabricus, Johann (ed.).
Rostock, heirs of Johann Richel, 1638.. 4to. (12), 235, (1) pp. Contemp. vellum.. First edition, second issue (the imprint of the first issue is dated 1637). This anthology of Arabic literature includes the first of the maqama ("sessions") of al-Hariri (d. 1122), the first published text of al-Hariri in Europe. It also contains extracts from Abu al-Ala' al-Ma'arri and Ibn al-Farid and an essay on Arabic poetry based on Golius's lectures. Johann Fabricius (1608-53) was born in Danzig and lived in Rostock where he taught philosophy. He was a pupil of the well-known professor of Arabic Jacob Golius, who encouraged him to publish the present work. As Fabricius states in the preface, the "Specimen" had already been finished six years before, but its publication was delayed due to the difficulty in obtaining Arabic types. Eventually the Arabic types, imitations of those used by Erpenius, were made in Copenhagen. - Bound in between the preliminaries and the text proper of this copy is an apparently unrecorded two-leaf printing containing a poem in Arabic by Fabricius, bearing a Latin dedication to Johann Raue, a philologist and teacher at Rostock, in honour of his appointment as professor of eloquence there on 14 February 1637. The poem offers thanks to God for having preserved the fabric of the university from destruction during the Thirty Years' War. - First few leaves slightly browned due to paper; tear in leaf R4 repaired without loss. From the library of the classical scholar and educator Friedrich Carl Rumpf (1772-1824) with his ms. ownership to front flyleaf, stricken out a … [Click Below for Full Description]

1638 - Dutch struggle for Brazil. Official account of the Dutch raid of Bahia, with a combined force of French soldiers, and natives. 1638. Madrid. 1638. Francisco Martinez. In folio (288 mm x 210 mm). 6 ff. Unbound. Some light foxing, wide margins, strong impression, excellent example. First edition. A rare and first-hand source of information on the events of the 14 June, 1638, when a combined force of Dutch, French, and recruited natives attacked the Spanish/Portuguese city of Bahia. Dutch interest in Brazil -and particularly Bahia- was cause of several incursions, as it stood as the centre of the economic power in Portuguese Brazil. The imprint starts by condemning the French and the Dutch for their greed and obstination, in joining forces with Heretics and Turks, to conquer Spanish overseas possessions. Silva, aware of Dutch presence nearby, expected the pending attack on Bahia, which was part of a larger group of actions beginning on May; Count Bagnuoli, appointed by Governor Pedro de Silva, victoriously rejected the attack. “Official account of the Dutch and French Expedition of 1,600 men against the Spanish in Bahia, in which the Spanish, under the governor Don Pedro de Silva were successful, the Dutch being driven off. The Dutch had made the River S. Francisco, midway between Bahia and Pernambuco, their base this expedition being undertaken to recapture the city” (Maggs, 211, 1926). “The Dutch had held Pernambuco and Bahia, but having lost the latter organized this expedition of 1,600 men for its recapture. It was made from their base on the River S. … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Dominicus Germanus de Silesia, OFM).
Rome, Congreg. de Propaganda Fide, 1638.. 4to (227 x 163 mm). 1 bl. f., 66 pp. (counted as 43; numerous errors in pagination; some parts included in two variants). With woodcut title vignette. Contemp. limp vellum with ms. title to spine.. Very rare polemical work, printed throughout in Arabic and Latin, that aims to compare and contrast Christian and Muslim scripture and doctrines. Dedicated to Cardinal Barberini. The editor Dominicus (1585-1670) taught Arabic at the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide since 1636 and collaborated on their Bible project. His magnum opus, one of the first literal Quran translations, was not rediscovered and published until 1883. In 1636 he published a Arabic grammar (the first publication of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide press to use Arabic type); in 1639 he would produce a dictionary of vernacular Arabic. Four years in the Middle East had convinced him that a missionary must before everything else know the vernacular language (cf. Fück, p. 78). The present work was considered lost quite recently by Antonio Garcia Masegosa in his study "German de Silesia, Interpretatio Alcorani Litteralis, Parte I: La traduccion latina" (Madrid, 2009): "Por la misma epoca, publico un tratado religioso en arabe y en latin titulado Antitheses fidei, que se encuentra perdido en la actualidad, o que al menos no ha podido ser localizado para este trabajo" (p. 14). - Marked brownstaining throughout with waterstain to upper corner. Still an appealing copy. - Schnurrer 248. Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an IV, 237. OCLC 491545005, 54509800.
