SANDYS, George.
London, At the Bell in St. Pauls Churchyard. 1638. [Colophon: London, Printed by John Legatt 1637.]. Folio, pp. [22], 55, [13], 171, [1], 15, [1], 33, [1], wanting 3A1 (the very rare divisional title 'A paraphrase on the Lamentations of Jeremiah by G. S.', cancelled or torn for cancellation in almost all known copies; manuscript correction to one word on B3 recto (as in other copies we have seen); old repairs to foot of prelims, a little dusty, a few spots and stains; withal a good copy in contemporary calf, panelled gilt, covers scraped at foot, joints cracking.First edition, the issue with the Dedication to Charles I on the title-verso. The 'poet-adventurer' George Sandys, whom Dryden named 'the best versifier' of his age, had published an octavo collection, A Paraphrase upon the Psalmes of David, in 1636; here he adds paraphrases of Job, Ecclesiastes, and the Lamentations of Jeremiah, and a few songs collected out of prose books of the Bible, with commendatory poems from, among others, Henry King, Sidney Godolphin, Thomas Carew, and Edmund Waller, several meditating upon the growing troubles of the kingdom. Twenty-four of the Psalms are 'Set to new Tunes for private Devotion: and a thorow Base, for Voice, or Instrument' by Henry Lawes (1596-1662), 'the most famous songwriter of his age' and a friend of Milton (Oxford DNB). Probably intended for performance by the Chapel Royal, they are the first works by Lawes to appear in print, and some are still in use as hymn tunes today. Light browning and spotting of text, inner margin with scattered light rust spotting, leaf K4 with tear in blank fore-margin outside text, closed tear in Aa2 without loss, corners of first two leaves frayed. Provenance: illegible ink signature to half-title and lower pastedown, faint old stamp to first title. A very good copy in an untouched contemporary binding. ---- Caillet 4036; Ferguson I, p. 284; Gardner 237; NLM/Krivatsy 4140; Shaaber F150; Wellcome 2331. FIRST EDITION. This is Robert Fludd's last (posthumous) work, the mature expression of his philosophy. In it, deeply informed by arguments drawn from alchemical and cabbalistic sources, he delves into the mystical origins of all things, which he believed built upon the three primary elements of darkness, light, and the waters or the Spirit of the Lord. A significant thinker in the Rosicrucian tradition, he had earlier written against Kepler's criticisms of his theories. This cosmogenic work is significant in part simply because it does delve into the origins of the universe in a quasi-scientific fashion, and Fludd's thought, while flawed, was profound an … [Click Below for Full Description]

MURRELL, John
Printed by M. F[lesher] for Iohn Marriot, and are to be sold at his shop in Saint Dunstans Church-yard in Fleet-street, 1638. 8vo. [vi], 188, [xiv]. 3 parts in 1. Black letter, titles and prefaces in Roman. First title within double rule border, woodcut initials, woodcut and typographical head pieces and ornaments, "Mary Freeman her Book 1715" on front free endpaper, the same dated "1733" on verso. Light age yellowing, margins of title page fractionally dusty, small section torn away from blank lower margin of M4 with loss of signature letter, miniscule wormhole in upper margin, occasional marginal thumb mark. A very good copy, crisp and clean in contemporary calf, covers bordered with triple blind rule, ink stain to upper cover, spine ends worn, a.e.r. Very rare, probably second edition of this hugely important and fascinating cookery book, one of only a handful of surviving copies of any of the early editions, and one of the first cookbooks to establish cookery as a fashion, rather than simply a practical guide to running a household. The work is divided into three parts, each with its own title page, the first two on new recipes for cooking, and the third "a New Booke of Carving and sewing". In its prefaces and its dedications (to Mrs Martha Hayes in the first book and to Lady Browne in the second) the author disparages previous cookery books "the most of which nevertheless have instructed rather how to marre than to make good Meate". Murrell's work was new in that it established a new spirit of cookery as 'Fashion', and fashion as characteristic of the cosmopolitan life … [Click Below for Full Description]

The whole engraving consists of two superimposed separate views. On the top is a battle on the banks of the Scheldt, the right is a church; in the shallow water drift some sailing boats and many drowning soldiers. The bottom image is drawn in the form of a map with a view on the Scheldt; here are shown fortifications and many fighting soldiers. On the bottom of the pictures is the legend: 1-18. In 1638 Cardinal Infante Ferdinand, governor of the Spanish Netherlands, fought successfully against the Dutch and French armies. Finally, he was able to expel the invaders from the land. The Dutch built some hills around the Scheldt. In the battle which sparked by an attack of the Spaniards against these buildings, many soldiers were drowned, but the hills were finally able to be occupied by the Spaniards. This collision occurred in the 1638. Etching on paper, lower border trimmed on platemark; total: 297 x 372 mm. PH4F

Beverwyck, (Beverwijck) Johan van
Leyden, Elsevir, 1638, 12, (16), 305, (15) pp., Pergamenteinband der Zeit feines Exemplar. First Medical Treatise to contain an Endorsement of Harvey's Discovery! The rare first edition of Johan van Beverwijck's (1594-1647) monograph present in the first book (pp. 1-208) Beverwijck's treatise on calculi in the kidney and bladder. The second part (pp. 209-305) contains letters addressed by Beverwijck to some prominent physicians, including Nuñez, Back, Saumaise, and Zacuto whom he consulted on that subject, along with their replies. Several consilia by Sanctorius, Spiegel, Horst, and others follow. At the end of 1637 Beverwyck wrote a letter to Harvey in which he expressed his admiration for Harvey's discovery of blood circulation. At the same time he sent him a copy of the present book. It is the first medical treatise to contain an endorsement of Harvey's discovery, a remarkable fact in view of the negative attitude within the academic circles in Holland. The passage in question "Harvei doctrina de Circulatione sanguinus comprobata" (pp.20-24) is discussed by Walter Pagel in his William Harvey's Biological Ideas (1967), who reproduces the title-page of our book and two pages of the passage on Harvey. Harvey replied to Beverwijck's letter in April 1638, praising his book as "learned and elegant, and truly original." Osler notes the significance of Beverwyck's correspondence with Harvey but was unable to obtain a copy of this rare book. Beverwijck , was born in Dordrecht on 17 November 1594. He was the son of Bartholomeus van Beverwijck ( -1615), a textile trader, … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition, with a fine provenance, of Niceron's important treatise on perspective, geometrical optics, and anamorphic projection, which gains added significance in the history of science for containing (in Book IV) "perhaps the first published reference to Descartes' derivation of the law of refraction (1638) and thus gains some historical significance" - DSB. / The work is famous for its study of the application of illusion to optical science: "The classic phase of anamorphosis, during which it came to relate vitally to a series of scientific and theological concerns, occurred in France and Rome in the 1630s and 1640s. The theorist at the centre of the Paris-Rome developments was Jean-Francois Niceron" - Kemp. / "This richly illustrated manual on perspective revealed for the first time the secrets of anamorphosis and trompe l'oeil. It contained the first published reference to Descartes's derivation of the law of refraction. LEMOYNE, Jean.
Ad 1: Guilmard, Les maítres ornamentistes, p. 102; Berlin Kat. 341; ad 2: Berlin Kat. 341; for Lemoyne see: Thieme-Becker XXIII, p. 32; Jessen, pp. 212-213. Attractive collection of 2 ornamental print series (second and first edition respectively) by the French engraver Jean Lemoyne (1638-1713), who was closely connected to the studio of Jean Bérain (1640-1711). His style was attractive and modern: "...früh in sein Rankenwerk [hatte er] auch die kommende Mode, Linien- und Bandzierat, geschmiegt." (Jessen). The engraved ornaments include (mythological) animals and figures, grotesques, flowers, garlands, etc. Both of the present works by Lemoyne were engraved in the studios of Bérain, which can be seen in the resemblance of Lemoyne's and Bérain's fantastic and decorative grotesques. Added at the end is the engraved title-page of the print series Premier des magnifiques carosses de Monseigneur le duc d'Ossuna, by the French engraver Bernard Picart (1673-1733), also showing ornaments and figures. The plates illustrated the ornate sculptural coach used for the entry of the Duke of Osuna into the Dutch city of Utrecht in 1713.Ad 1 lacking 1 plate: Guilmard mentions 6 plates, while Berlin Kat mentions 7. Plates slightly browned, some slightly soiled, with a few small spots, or creased, otherwise in good condition. Binding worn along the extremities, especially the spine, but still good.
