PYROTECHNICS - FIREWORKS - MALTHE, FRANCOIS de. (FRANCIS MALTHUS).
Paris, Pierre Gvillemot, 1632. 8vo. Cont. full limp vellum, remains of ties. Titlelabel in red leather on back, this with a small nick. Top of spine strenghtened with a strip of vellum. Engraved title with Neptun & Mars. (6),277,(10) pp., 28 half-page textengravings and 15 large wood-cut illustrations. A few scattered brownspots. A good copy. Second enlaged edition of this scarce treatise of fireworks for war and recreation. The work is divided in five sections: the first 56 pp. to war, pp. 57-146 to 'recreation' and pp. 147-277 to sundials, fortification, geometry and arithmetics. Of the English edition of 1629, Cockle says "This work, though in advance of anything so far written on the subject in English, does not attain to the standard of Thibourel and Appier. Yet it is with foreign treatises it must be weighed, for Malthus received his training in pyrotechnics abroad. It was Malthus who about the year 1634 introduced the mortar into the French service." - Klaus Jordan: 2328 (ed. 1629) - Chris Philip: M 040.3 - Cockle Nos 118 a. 939. MATTHIEU, PIERRE.:
London, printed by John Haviland for Godfrey Emondson, 1632.. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION 1632, translated by Sir Thomas Hawkins. Small 4to, 190 x 140 mm, 7½ x 5½ inches, engraved pictorial title page, dated title page to second part but register and pagination continuous, pages: (4), 299, bound in contemporary full vellum, hand lettered to spine. Most copies like ours just have the engraved title without the letterpress title, a few have just a letterpress title. Some discolouration to vellum, some light rust staining to lower cover, head of spine just slightly worn, ties lacking, short closed tear to fore-edge of front endpaper and title page, neatly repaired with no loss, signature on front endpaper, occasional small pale stain, otherwise contents clean and bright. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce book. The first part is a translation of "Aelius Sejanus, histoire romaine" by Pierre Matthieu. It is translated into English as a satire on the fall of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham. The second part is a translation of "Histoire des prosperitez malheureuses d'une femme cathenoise, grande seneschalle de Naples" also by Matthieu, based on a story from "De casibus illustrium virorum" by Giovanni Boccaccio. Both works are supposed to have been written by Matthieu originally to represent the rise and fall of Concino Concini and his wife, Leonora Galigai. Concino Concini, (d. 1617), was a Florentine adventurer, favourite of Marie de' Medici, queen of France, who exerted great influence after the assassination of Marie's husband, Henry IV in 1610, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lugduni Batavorum , Apud Elzevirios, 1632. 24mo, 114 x 60 mms., pp. 379 [380 note on author, 381 - 384 Index], including engraved frontispiece, with "ob-" as catchword on A5r, "LX.V" in last line Aa6v, contemporary vellum, "Ex Libris Nolles" on lower margin of title-page; front cover slightly stained. Little seems to be known about the French scientiest, topographer, and translator, Pierre Gilles (1490 - 1555). His De Topographia Constantinopoleos et de illius antiquitatibus libri IV, was translated into English in 1729 by John Ball, as The Antiquities of Constantinople; most of his books were published posthumously and edited by his nephew, Antoine Gilles, who edited the present volume. At an early age he was interested in ichthyology, published De Vi et Natura Animalium in 1533. The present book is one of the earliest commentaries on the Thracian Bosphorus and its topography and people.

Amsterdam:: Apud Iohann Ianssonium,. 1632.. 16mo: a - f^8 A - 2Q^8. 2Q8 a blank. 4-1/2" x 2-1/4". 1st Edition in Latin. [96], 621, [3 (blank)] pp. First word of title transliterated from Greek.. Bound in plain binder's board.. Bookplates to front eps ("Comte Etienne Karolyi"). A VG copy.. Bohme a German philosophical mystic who had a profound influence on such later intellectual movements as idealism and Romanticism. Born of poor parents in Goerlitz Germany, as a boy he tended cattle, later becoming a shoemaker, marrying & fathering 4 children. Boehme, at the robust age of 37 in 1612, wrote his first treatise Aurora, oder Die Morgenroete in Aufgang. In 1613, an unauthorized copy of the manuscript was copied and circulated by Karl von Ender. Its reception "raised him out of his homely sphere, and made him the centre of a local circle of liberal thinkers, considerably above him in station and culture." However, the local pastor primarius of Gorlitz, Gregorius Richter, leveled a charge of heresy. The local muncipal council administered an admonishment to no further "meddle in such matters." This charge Boehme [publicly] followed for 5 years. In 1618 Boehme again started writing expository & polemical treatises. The majority of his works were written, though not formally published, from 1619 - 1624. A second major work, Der Weg zu Christo, was published in 1624, and signaled a renewal of clerical hostility. Boehem, however, was destined to suffer but a short period of this second persecution; he died of an illness on 17 November 1624. Boehme has been said to have a "fer … [Click Below for Full Description]

Owners entry on title-page: "Missionis Warendorpiensis S(ocie)tatis Jesu 1729". " . Blosius published a broad variety of works focusing on practical spiritual advice for the common believer, outlining central Christological themes, offering guidance on prayer and self-perfection, presenting basic doctrines of theologia mystica and providing the reader with anthologies of texts from older Christian authors. Althoug BLosius' oeuvre is characterized by a relatively high degree of ecclecticism and its originality lags behind such authors as Meister Eckhart, John of the Cross or Teresa of Avila, it provided to be a valuable reservoir of spirituality for the 'vommon monk' and the 'common believer': in the two and a half centuries following Blosius' death his works were printed in different editions throughout Europe almost annually." Juan de Santa María, fray.
Pr. by Thomas Harper for Richard Collins, 1632. Uncommon first edition of this English translation of Fray Juan de Santa María's Tratado de República y policía christiana, published in 1615. A Christian perspective on the powers and responsibilities of monarchs, the work was inspired by the Franciscan author's opposition to the government of the Duke of Lerma. The English rendition was often assigned to Edward Blount (who signed the dedication), but is now generally considered the work of => scholar and poet James Mabbe, known for his translations of Cervantes and other works of Spanish literature and theology. The title-page here is a cancel, changing the publisher from Edward Blount to Richard Collins. The work was additionally issued in the same year with yet another title-page, under the title, Policy Unveiled: Wherein may be Learned the Order of True Policie in Kingdomes and Commonwealths, the Matters of Justice, and Government. . . . Uncommon: ESTC, OCLC, and NUC Pre-1956 find only 9 U.S. holdings.

Piatti, Girolamo] 1545-1591
J. Cousturier, Rouen 1632 - An example of Catholic writings suppressed by the English government in the 16-17 centuries. Their printing was prohibited so most were produced in France or Belgium. Many of the nearly a thousand works briefly recorded in Allison & Rogers "Catalogue of Catholic books in English printed abroad or secretly in England, 1558-1640" lack title pages or are otherwise defective. Without collations it is impossible to know whether a title is on a single preliminary leaf or part of a gathering. The two issues of this Piatti in A&R (its 653 and 654, STC 20001 and 20001.5) have the title as a single leaf, the first without, the second with imprint, but both have the tell-tale Jesuit connection and "Permissu superiorum", reason sufficient to explain its abscence from this copy, its deft removal from hostile viewing. Original limp vellum, lacking ties, spine with a later inked inscription of the title. At top of the first page is a brief inked notation, the only evidence of provenance. Well-printed, on good paper, clean. (More, Henry 1586-1661. Recusant literature. Monastic and religious life.) Size: 23.2cm. [8]613[4,blank]p.

Shakespeare William
[London]: [by Thomas Cotes for Robert Allot], [1632]. From the famed Second Folio of Shakespeare. Folio, quarter brown calf and marbled boards, gilt lettered and ruled on the spine. 107-150. A large and handsome copy, the binding in excellent order, the textblock quite nice and with only occasional and typical light spotting or aging. RARE EXAMPLE FROM THE SECOND FOLIO OF SHAKESPEARE. Two plays of Shakespeare’s great series of Roman plays, of which JULIUS CAESAR is without question the most famous. Complete and extracted from the Second Folio edition of his COMEDIES, HISTORIES, AND TRAGEDIES, a cornerstone--and some would say foundation--of English literature. While the complete Second Folio is one of the book collector's great prizes, a status well reflected in its price these days, this is an opportunity to acquire two of the most famous plays from the volume bound separately. Both of these works, along with the other Classical dramas, are believed to have been derived from Sir Thomas North’s great translation of Plutarch. Shakespeare’s version of JULIUS CAESAR is of such high regard that for many modern people, when they think Caesar, they are actually thinking Shakespeare.

Shakespeare William
[London]: [by Thomas Cotes for Robert Allot], [1632]. From the famed Second Folio of Shakespeare. Folio, quarter brown calf and marbled boards, gilt lettered on the spine. 1-38. A handsome copy, the binding in excellent order, the text with occasional spotting or light typical staining, the “Tempest” leaves trimmed a bit more then those of the “Two Gentlemen” and from another copy. TWO OF SHAKESPEARE’S ENGAGING COMEDIES, INCLUDING “THE TEMPEST”, extracted from the Second Folio edition of his COMEDIES, HISTORIES, AND TRAGEDIES, a cornerstone--and some would say foundation--of English literature. While the complete Second Folio is one of the book collector's great prizes, a status well reflected in its price these days, this is an opportunity to acquire two of the plays from the volume bound separately. THE TEMPEST is one of Shakespeare’s most famous romantic dramas. Its magical themes have inspired numerous later works of art such as; Milton’s COMUS, an unfinished opera by Mozart, Shelley’s ‘Ariel to Miranda’, music by Tchaikovski and Berlioz, Auden’s THE SEA AND THE MIRROR and even the groundbreaking science fiction motion picture ‘Forbidden Planet’ in 1954. Its influence is far reaching and with good reason. Though many incidences and classical works are considered as somewhat inspirational for it, no source for the story has ever been know, it is one of Shakespeare’s most original works.

Sagard-Theodat, Gabriel:
Paris. 1632.. [22],380,[2]pp. With the extra engraved title. [bound with:] DICTIONAIRE DE LA LANGUE HURONNE. Paris. 1632. 12,[146],[14]pp. Small octavo. 18th- century calf, spine gilt, edges stained red. Slight separation at upper front hinge. Leaves washed, titlepage expertly remounted on matching paper. A few unobtrusive marginal repairs in main text, bottom edge of leaves of DICTIONAIRE... expertly restored. Withal, a very good copy. In a half morocco and cloth box. Sagard was a Recollet missionary who spent 1623-24 in Huronia as a missionary to the Huron nation. His book, based largely on his own experiences and those of his associates, as well as contemporary letters and documents, are considered to be the main authority for the history of the first Recollet mission in Canada in 1615- 29, and the main source for Indian life and relations with the French which does not stem from the Jesuits. "Sagard and Champlain were the first explorers to give any very definite statements about the Huron Indian country and what they had learned from these Indians about the Great Lakes Country" - Greenly. Most of the work is devoted to the life of the Hurons, and has been called "a brilliant, astonishingly precise fresco." The Huron dictionary is the first printed Huron vocabulary, a collection of French expressions translated into Huron, to be used as a manual by traders and missionaries. Sagard assembled it from his own work and those of other missionaries, and it remains "the most complete compilation extant dealing with the old Huron language." A major and important rarity of Canad … [Click Below for Full Description]
