Johannes Leo Africanus
Leiden: Elzevier, 1632. 2 parts in 1 vol. 24mo (11,1 x 5,8 cm). 1 - 384; 385 - 800, (16) pp. Contemporary full overlapping vellum, spine with handwritten title. The only Elzevier-edition of Leo Africanus' famous work on Africa. The most authoritative treatise on this subject until the modern exploration of Africa. Although called "A Description of Africa", it is in reality merely a description of those parts of Africa lying north of the equator, that were personally known to Leo or to his informants. The work is divided into 9 Books. Book I provides a general introduction of Africa. Book II covers the Kingdoms of Hea and Marocco and the region of Sus. Book III is about the Kingdom of Fez. Book IV treats the desert of Numidia and the Kingdom of Telensin (= Tlemçen in Algeria). Book V is on the kingdoms of Bugia and Tunis. Book VI is on "Gar" (probably a village in the berber region). Book VII "Nigritarum regionis" (Land of the Negroes, Nubia). Book VIII on "Aegyptus". Book IX with an overview of the rivers, animals, fishes, minerals and plants of Africa. It was not only a very popular work, but also an important one, because of its accurate description of a region of which was very little known to Europeans. And published at a time when the Muhamedan-Ottoman Empire was on collision course with the European forces in the western Mediterranean and West Africa. At the end an alphabetical index. Engraved title page for the first part. Unsigned. Typographic title page (page 385) for the second part, with Elzevier's Non Solus printer's woodcut device. Jean-Louis GUEZ DE BALZAC
chez Toussaint du Bray. Second edition, the first edition being published in the previous year. Vellum flexible full time, dumb back. A torn vellum tail, the seams are somewhat loose. End of the book, 10 pages folded corner. The book is a political picture of Europe under Louis XIII laced with examples from antiquity (note a curious table of contents). The author establishes the portrait of a prince with all the qualities of an honest man seventeenth-and that some designate as a flattering portrait of Louis XIII .. The book is considered remarkable for the clarity of its language and the perfection of his eloquence. Tchemerzine, I, 359. The book was censored 3 years after publication by the Sorbonne. 'Cettte edition has undergone the corner indicated by the faculty of the Sorbonne. Petrus Cunaeus
Leiden: Elzevier, 1632 Second edition. 24mo (11,1 x 5,7 cm). (32), 372 pp. Contemporary full overlapping vellum, spine with handwritten title. One of the most sought-after of the Elzevier Republics. It belongs to the three editions in the Republics-series dealing with classical republican states, i.e. the antique Roman, Greek and Hebrew states. In this "Hebrew Republic", Cunaeus used many Jewish texts, a.o. the Mishneh Torah, authored by Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (Rambam, Maimonides). This work, as one of the first studies by Christian authors of the ancient Hebrew polity, is a milestone on that subject and became one of the most popular and influential works among Protestant theologians. Cunaeus depicts the ancient Hebrew Kingdom as a practical model for a Republican government. As a statement of republican theory, it influenced directly the formation of the government in the early years of the independent Dutch Republic. In his view, the Hebrew State was of a higher order than the Greek or Roman States. Cunaeus was afraid that the Dutch Republic might fall, as Athens and Rome had fallen, because of the political turbulence of that time in the United Provinces. At the end Cunaeus calls for tolerance towards the Jews. With three headpieces and several 4-, 5- and 6-line decorated woodcut-initials. Engraved title page. Especially this second edition of 1632 is rather rare, more so than the first edition of that year. Excellent and remarkably fresh copy. Marino Gio. Battista
appresso Ottavio Beltrano, s.d.

68 pp., one leaf of errata & printer's license, & one blank leaf. Small 4to, attractive antique vellum over boards (title a bit spotted), covers panelled in gilt with gilt fleurons in corners, triple gilt fillet round sides. Florence: P. Nestus, 1632. First edition and a fine copy of one of the great rarities in the Galileian literature. This is the first published criticism of Galileo's Dialogo, issued just a few months after the publication of Galileo's great book. Bérigard (d. 1664), studied medicine and philosophy at Aix-en-Provence and was summoned to Tuscany in 1625 where he taught philosophy at Pisa. "In 1632 Bérigard published the Dubitationes, concerning Galileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems (condemned in 1633). Galileo himself is quoted as saying to Elie Diodati (25 July 1634) that it was more out of obligation than conviction. Bérigard, who must have known Galileo personally, always praised him, but remained firmly convinced of the earth's immobility."-D.S.B., II, p. 13. The text contains many references to Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, and Kepler. Bérigard moved to Padua in 1640 where he became well-known as a teacher and succeeded Liceti in 1653. In his remaining years, he followed Gassendi in reviving atomism. A great scholar, Bérigard remained deeply involved in preparing the future for a rational physics. A fine and large copy of this rare book. Errata leaf and final blank present. ❧ Cinti 90-(with an excellent account of the contents of the book).

Cardinale Guido Bentivoglio
3/1/1632. Lettera autografo Cardinale Guido Bentivogli - Roma 3/1/1632. In-4°, 4 pp., 21 righe, firmata e datata. Ben conservata. BENTIVOGLIO, Guido. [Click Below for Full Description]

Testo inquadrato entro filetto tipografico. Dedica a stampa al Cardinale Antonio Barberini. Alcuni capilettera e fregi tipografici istoriati in xilografia.
