Shakespeare William
[London]: [by Thomas Cotes for Robert Allot], [1632]. From the famed Second Folio of Shakespeare. Folio, handsomely bound in period style full calf paneled in blind and with gilt lettering on the upper board and spine, the spine also with gilt ruled raised bands. 205-232 pp. A very handsome and fine copy, the text with only the very lightest of mellowing from age, the binding proper and pristine. Shakespeare's famous play of pride, divorce, execution and the transformation or religious life in England. From the Second Folio edition of his COMEDIES, HISTORIES, AND TRAGEDIES, a cornerstone--and some would say foundation--of English literature. While the complete Second Folio is one of the book collector's great prizes, a status well reflected in its price these days, this is an opportunity to acquire one of the most famous plays from the volume bound separately. One of the most contemporary of Shakespeare's Histories it deals with the fall and execution of the Duke of Buckingham; the question of the Royal divorce; the pride and fall of Wolsey; the coronation of Anne Boleyn; the triumph of Cranmer over hi s enemies and the Christening of Princess Elizabeth. Its performance in June of 1613 resulted in the burning down of the Globe Theatre.

AESOP.
Landwehr, Emblem & fable books F025 (2 copies); Hollstein XXVII, Van Sichem II, 31; for the panel-stamp: Spoelder, Prijsboeken, Amersfoort 1. Rare second(?) edition (one of three dated "1632") of a popular Greek and Latin school book, edited by the famous Dutch neo-Latin poet, humanist and Leiden Professor of Greek, Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), with 47 beautiful woodcut illustrations by Christoffel van Sichem II. Aesop's fables were prescribed by the States of Holland in the Hollandsche schoolordre of 1625 as one of the books to be read in the 3rd class. Christoffel van Sichem II (ca. 1577-1658), the second of several woodcut artists in that family, studied with Jacques de Gheyn and was one of the leading Dutch book illustrators in the first half of the 17th century. Although the book has no prize certificate or inscription and no owner's name, the coat-of-arms of the city of Amersfoort on the binding of a school book strongly suggests a prize binding for a student at the Amersfoort Latin school. With an occasional contemporary manuscript note in Greek and Latin. With a small dark stain in the lower inside corner of the foot margin of many leaves, not approaching the text, and with very slight browning throughout, but still in good condition. The vellum of the binding is dirty and slightly rubbed but also good. Most endpapers later.

EMMIUS,U.
Leiden (Lugd. Batavorum), Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1632. 24mo. 2 parts in 1: 426,(6 index);323,(7 index & privilegium) p. Calf 11.5 cm (Ref: Willems 364; Berghman 1573; Rahir 345; Ebert 6690) (Details: Back and boards with blind tripple fillet borders. Title engraved by C.C.D(uysend), it depicts around the text of the title a floral cartouche, on top of which rests an eagle (aquila) with spread wings, holding in its talons the deadly thunderbolts (fulmina) of Jupiter. The eagle was called by Aristotle for the lordly manner with which it looked over the earth 'divine among birds'. (HA 619b.6) The eagle is flanked by an owl (wisdom) and two 'kissing' pigeons. The second part has its own title, on it a woodcut printer's mark featuring an old man who stands in the shade of a vine-entwined elmtree, symbolising the symbiotic relationship between scholar and publisher. The motto is enigmatic: 'Non solus' , probably indicating the interdependency of publisher and scholar. They cannot do it alone, and need each other) (Condition: Binding scuffed, corners bumped. Endpapers detached) (Note: Ubbo Emmius, 1547-1625, born in Eastern Friesland was appointed professor of History and Greek literature at the newly established University of Groningen in 1614, where he became also the first Rector Magnificus. In his publications and correspondence with eminent scholars of his time, he defended the right of a people to revolt, an idea that would eventually lead to the French revolution. In the Netherlands he is best known for his Rerum Frisicarum Historia, 1592-1616, the first modern study of F … [Click Below for Full Description]
