EMMIUS,U.
Leiden (Lugd. Batavorum), Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1632. 24mo. 2 parts in 1: 426,(6 index);323,(7 index & privilegium) p. Calf 11.5 cm (Ref: Willems 364; Berghman 1573; Rahir 345; Ebert 6690) (Details: Back and boards with blind tripple fillet borders. Title engraved by C.C.D(uysend), it depicts around the text of the title a floral cartouche, on top of which rests an eagle (aquila) with spread wings, holding in its talons the deadly thunderbolts (fulmina) of Jupiter. The eagle was called by Aristotle for the lordly manner with which it looked over the earth 'divine among birds'. (HA 619b.6) The eagle is flanked by an owl (wisdom) and two 'kissing' pigeons. The second part has its own title, on it a woodcut printer's mark featuring an old man who stands in the shade of a vine-entwined elmtree, symbolising the symbiotic relationship between scholar and publisher. The motto is enigmatic: 'Non solus' , probably indicating the interdependency of publisher and scholar. They cannot do it alone, and need each other) (Condition: Binding scuffed, corners bumped. Endpapers detached) (Note: Ubbo Emmius, 1547-1625, born in Eastern Friesland was appointed professor of History and Greek literature at the newly established University of Groningen in 1614, where he became also the first Rector Magnificus. In his publications and correspondence with eminent scholars of his time, he defended the right of a people to revolt, an idea that would eventually lead to the French revolution. In the Netherlands he is best known for his Rerum Frisicarum Historia, 1592-1616, the first modern study of F … [Click Below for Full Description]

From Histoire du règne de Charles Gustave, roy de Suède. Issued from C. Riegel, 1697. - vita of the artist: Baron Samuel von Pufendorf (1632 ?1694) was a German jurist, political philosopher, economist, statesman, and historian. His name was just Samuel Pufendorf until he was ennobled in 1684. In 1677 Pufendorf was called to Stockholm as Historiographer Royal. To this new period belong Einleitung zur Historie der vornehmsten Reiche und Staaten. In his historical works, Pufendorf wrote in a very dry style, but he professed a great respect for truth and generally drew from archival sources. This work propounded for the first time the so-called "collegial" theory of church government (Kollegialsystem), which, developed later by the learned Lutheran theologian Christoph Mathkus Pfaff, formed the basis of the relations of church and state in Germany and more especially in Prussia.

This is chapter 8 from the book (1698), pages 243 through 260. "In 1594, Spelman's purchases of leases of Blackborough and Wormegay Abbeys from the crown lessees caused him to be involved in extensive litigation in chancery, which was not settled until 1625 by the Lord Keeper, Sir Thomas Coventry. When Sir Francis Bacon heard the case, he found against Spelman, which perhaps explains his involvement in petitioning Parliament against the Lord Chancellor. It was in his unhappy tribulations over these former church properties that Spelman first discerned the infelicity of meddling with consecrated places. He was still collecting material on the punishment meted out to those committing sacrilege in 1633, but his work, The History and Fate of Sacrilege, although sent to the printers in 1663, was delayed in the press and temporarily lost during the fire of London. It was subsequently recovered by Edmund Gibson, but rem … [Click Below for Full Description]

Petrus Gyllius
Leiden: Elzevier, 1632 First edition. 24mo (11,2 x 5,5 cm). 428 pp. Contemporary overlapping full vellum. Spine with handwritten title. Gyllius's work on the topography of Constantinople provides a description of Constantinople. This description of Constantinople consists of four books. He describes initially the geographical location, the natural environment, the water supply and the climate of the region. He reviews the city's mythological and historical past, and subsequently, each one of the seven hills of the city. He then describes the monuments, temples, statues, Basilicas, walls, gates and towers &c. He comes back to the most ancient monuments on every hill and ends with the description of Galata and the Ottoman monuments. That is followed by a description of Constantinople at the time of the emperors Arcadius and Honorius around 400. At the end an index. Willems (367) quotes two editions of this work (Copinger 2037 & 2038); Brunet does not. Ours is the first of these two (Copinger 2037), with the Index Capitum printed between the Praefatio and the actual text; on p. 31, 1st line admonuisse i.s.o. admonuisset; on p. 33, line 5. With a fine engraved title page, depicting a bird's eye view of Constantinople and its harbour. The work contains 4 headpieces, 3 culs-de-lampe and 7 decorated woodcut initials. This edition not in Broman, nor in Traister, both only the second edition. Also not in Elsevier Heritage Collection. A very fine and remarkably fresh copy. Mercator, Gerard
Europe: Amsterdam, Johannis Cloppenburgji. 1632. Copper engraved map of the Duchy of Genoa/ Genova and the Ligurian Coast, from" Gerardi Mercatoris, Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica mundi et fabricati figura, "Latin text to verso. Good impression; dark damp stain to upper margin; some spotting; Left blank margin with slight paper loss; wormthole just outside right scale. The "Atlas Minor" of Gerhard Mercator appears in various formats, the first published by Jodicus Hondius in 1607 with plates he most likely engraved himself. Thereafter there appeared a number of editions. In 1628 Johannes Janssonius published a new series of editions, the plates engraved by Petrus Kaerius and Abraham Goos. Both of these were small format atlases in the tradition of that published by Langenes. In 1630 Johannes Cloppenburg published a French edition in a somewhat larger size, followed by this Latin edition in 1632. The plates were in the main engraved by Petrus Kaerius. Cloppenburg published the Altas at his own expense "sumptibus"as the imprint states. There was one more edition in 1636 with French text. Due to thier larger size the maps from the Cloppenberg editions have more information, than those of Hondius and Janssonius, and are considered by some scholars as a true reduction of the maps of Mercator, as they appear in the folio Atlas. Dyck, Anthonis [Anthony] van (1599 - 1641)
Format (Platte): 245 x 154 mm. Blattgröße: 375 x 230 mm. *Blatt aus der "Iconographie". - Wibiral 1, VI.
