JONSTON, John
Apud Guilielmum Blaeu, 1632. FIRST EDITION. 12mo [xii] 501 [iii]. Roman and Italic letter, woodcut initials and tail-pieces, t.p. with printer's device of an orrery. Light age browning, otherwise a good clean copy with C17 annotations, in contemporary English calf, covers triple-ruled in blind, spine remounted, a.e.r. FIRST EDITION of Jonston's most popular work on "admiranda" or wonders of nature organised into ten categories (heaven, earth, and topics relating to meteors, 'fossils' or minerals, plants, birds, quadrupeds, insects and 'bloodless' animals, fish, and humans). The work draws heavily from classical sources such as Aristotle, Pliny, and Seneca, but also from the more recent work of Aldrovandi, and in the section on plants includes descriptions of the flora and fauna of the New World, as well as tobacco. Each section is headed by a useful index to its contents, and the work concludes with a poem in praise of Jonston by the Bohemian poet Venceslaus Clemens. John Jonston (1603 - 1675) emigrated from Poland to Scotland in 1622 and studied natural history at St. Andrew's for four years. He received the degree of Doctor of Physic from both Leyden and Cambridge. Despite the compact size of Thaumaturgia, his earliest work, its wide range of material prefigures his later, large-scale works on Fish, Insects, Birds, and Trees, made possible by his extensive travel through Europe and access to its libraries, as well as firsthand observation. Venceslaus Clemens (1589 - 1640?), Protestant and prolific Neo-Latin poet, was forced to leave his native Bohemia after the Battle of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leiden: Ioannis Maire. Good. 1632. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. A charming pocket edition of Suetonius' collected works, containing XII Caesares, De grammaticus and De rhetoribus', as well as fragments. First Boxhorn edition. The book is in good antiquarian condition. It is a small 12mo, measuring 2.5” x 5” in what appear to be the original leather boards, spine has been rebacked with a different leather and a red leather label. Interior has an old bookplate (Jos. Fortescue) and some chipping to the first free endpaper, also some chipping to the title page at the fore-edge. Interior has some minor underlining and marginalia but is otherwise clean and unmarked, minor foxing and aging but quite nice all told. [36], 628, [4] p. 12° OCLC 797447133. The editor was Mark Zuerius Boxhorn (1612-1653) an eminent philologist, historian and antiquary who edited a number of classics for Elsevier. In addition to working on classical editions, he was the first to have suspected an ancient common European language (now called Indo-European) which he called “Scythian.” Boxhorn was known as quite a prodigy – indeed this work was printed when he was only 20 years old. As the nineteenth-century Cambridge historian George Long wrote:His language is very brief and precise, sometimes obscure, without any affectation or ornament. He certainly tells a prodigious number of scandalous anecdotes about the Caesars, but there was plenty to tell about them; and if he did not choose to suppress those anecdotes which he believed to be true, that is no imputation on his veracity. As a great collection of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Al-Wazzan al-Fasi, al-Hasan ibn Muhammad known as Joannes Leo Africanus.
Leyden, Elzevier, Leyden, 1632. (2 parts in 1 vol.) Description of Northern Africa written by the geographer and traveller Leo Africanus, 384 pp/ 387-800 pp., + 2 blanks, with one engraved title (with small defects, fully mounted on paper). Born Al-Hassan ibn Muhammed al-Wazaan al-Fasi, probably in Granada in ca. 1494, and upon completing his education in Fez, the author travelled through most of northern Africa between 1507 and 1520. In 1520 he also journeyed to Constantinople and Egypt, only to be captured by pirates and presented to Pope Leo X in Rome, where he converted to Christianity. This work was originally published as part of Ramusio's "Delle navigatione et viaggi". It was translated into French by Jean Temporal and published by the translator in Lyon in the same year as the Antwerp edition. Of the Lyon edition, Alden writes: "Extracted and translated from Ramusio's Venice, 1550, Primo volume delle navigationi, and including also Vespucci's narratives. The latter are not found in the Antwerp editions of Leo Africanus of this year" (Alden 556/25). About the first edition: "During the years 1511-1520, Leo Africanus travelled to Fez, Morocco, Tunis, and across the Sahara Desert to Timbuktu. He visited the native states on the Upper Niger to Kario, Houssa, Bornou and Lake Chad. He also made a voyage to Constantinople and Egypt and then crossed the Red Sea to Arabia. He was subsequently captured by the Venetian pirates and presented to Pope Leo X whose name "Leo" he adopted as his surname. Najera, A. de
Antonio Alvarez, Lisboa, 1632. "Early Scientific Treatise by a Portuguese Astronomer - Important for Early Studies on Climate -". 8vo; Roman letter, titles and index in Italic, astrological tables and diagrams in text, title-page woodcut of St. Anthony of Padua bearing the Christ child; contemporary vellum; missing last folio of index. FIRST EDITION. A scientific treatise by the Portuguese mathematician and astronomer Antonio de Najera. In this work, written in Spanish, Najera gives an extensive account of the influence of planets, and in particular the Sun and the Moon, on earthly climate changes: halfway between astronomy and astrology, the 'Summa' is in fact mainly conceived as an tool for weather and eclipse prediction and their effects on harvests. The treatise, which terminates with a brief section relating to the stars and their principal effects, is of remarkable interest for the history of early modern studies on climate, thanks to its peculiar fusion of 'scientific' astronomy with empiric astrology. * WorldCat: 4 copies in USA. Cantamessa, II 3084. Thorndike VIII, p. 129. Salva 3793. (Picatoste). *Palau 187293; Maggs 1927 652; Salva 3793; Picatoste y Rodriguez 530.
