Ovidius Naso, Publius (43 BC-17 AD); Sandys, George (1561-1629), translator
J. Lichfield,, Oxford, 1632. Folio: ?6 (-blank ?1), 4, A-D4, E4 (-blank E4), F-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Ttt4, Vvv2. (Leaves Q2 and 3 reversed.) With an added engraved title, engraved portrait frontispiece, and fifteen full-paged engravings. The First Illustrated Edition Sandys? important translation of Ovid, including his translation of Book One of Vergil?s ?Aeneid? Sandys never accomplished the task of translating the entire poem. The work that he found ?too heavy a burthen? was later taken up by his admirer, John Dryden. On the front end-paper of this volume is a manuscript quote, attributed to Dryden, which reads, ?English poetry owes much of its present beauty to Sandys? translations.??In 1621 Sandys arrived in Virginia, and during his residence there as secretary of the Colony he occupied his leisure time in completing his translation of Ovid on his estate in present day Sury, across the James River from Williamsburg, publishing it upon his return to England in 1626. His stay in this country was short, but his translation of Ovid is considered ?the first utterance of the conscious literary spirit articulated in America? (Quoted from Wither to Prior). "With the ?Aeneid? Vergil had realized the grandiose project of a Homeric-style poem, a national epic for Roman culture. Ovid in realizing his ambitions for a work of great scope takes another direction. The outer form was to be epic (the hexameter is its distinctive mark), as was the ample scale, but the model, which is based on Hesiod, is that of a "collective poem", one that gathers a series of independent stories linked by a si … [Click Below for Full Description]

PEREZ (Antonio).
En Barcelona, por Pedro Lacavalleria, 1632. - in-4. 2ff. 270pp. (i.e.272). 5ff. Palau, 60332. [Attributes: First Edition]

Marino Gio. Battista
appresso Ottavio Beltrano s.d. [Attributes: First Edition]

TranslatorÕs dedication signed: H.H., i.e. Henry Hawkins. Serre, M. de (Jean-Puget), [1600-1665]
- Paris [i.e. Saint-Omer : Printed by the English College Press], 1632 Octavo 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches 1 ‹? A-X? Y? First and only edition This copy s bound in its original limp vellym binding, soiled and rumpled. HAWKINS, HENRY (1571?Ð1646), jesuit, born in London in 1571 or 1575, was second son of Sir Thomas Hawkins, knt., of Nash Court, Kent, by Anne, daughter and heiress of Cyriac Pettit, of Boughton-under-the-Blean, Kent. John Hawkins [q. v.] and Sir Thomas Hawkins [q. v.] were his brothers. After studying classics in the college of the English jesuits at St. Omer, he entered the English College at Rome, under the assumed name of Brooke, on 19 March 1608Ð9. He received minor orders in 1613, was ordained priest about the same time, and, after spending two years in the study of scholastic theology, left for Belgium and entered the Society of Jesus about 1615. A manuscript ÔstatusÕ of the English College at Rome for 1613 says that he was the Ôson of a cavalier, lord of a castle, a man of mature age, intelligent in affairs of government, very learned in the English laws, and that he had left a wife, office, and many other commodities and expectations, to become a priest in the seminaries.Õ Hawkins on coming to England was captured and imprisoned. In 1618 he was sent into perpetual exile with eleven other jesuits, but, like most of his companions, soon returned to this country, where he laboured, principally in the London district, for twenty-five years. He is named among the Ôveterani missionariiÕ in the list of jesuits found among the papers seized in 1628 at the residen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. English. Authorized (i.e., "King James Version"). 1632.
Robert Barker...by the assignes of John Bill, 1632. [preceded by] Speed, John. The genealogies recorded in the Sacred Scriptures, according to euery familie and tribe. [London: F. Kingston, 1632?]. Folio. [2], 34 pp. [with] Bible. O.T. Psalms. English. Sternhold & Hopkins. 1632. The whole booke of Psalmes. Collected into English meeter.... London: Pr. by R. Badger for the Co. of Stationers, 1632. Folio. [2], 114 pp. (lacking 8 index pp.). Attractive folio King James Bible, set in roman in double columns ruled in red throughout, with woodcut headpieces and decorative capitals. Darlow and Moule suggest that this edition was actually printed in early 1633, as a number of copies are recorded as having their title-page dates altered by hand to read 1633, as is the case here. The Apocrypha are present, with the blank space on the last page of Malachi filled with an early inked "account of the several books in the Apocrypha." => The Psalter following the Bible includes music. The O.T. title-page is engraved and signed (very faintly in this example) by William (here "Guilielmus") Hole, and is framed by an elaborate architectural border displaying the coats of arms of the 12 tribes of Israel and portraits of the 12 Apostles. => The recto of the list of books is a full-page engraving of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, surrounded by animals. The New Testament has a separate title-page, dated 1632, with an ornate wood-engraved border featuring Justice and Truth along with the British lion and unicorn and various architectural motifs. The volume opens with two fly-leaves b … [Click Below for Full Description]

4°, zonder omslag, (12) pag. C2475 Knuttel 1632.

Sir Thomas Overbury
Printed By R.B. For Robert Allot, Paul's Churchyard,London, 1632. Quite an early issue of the celebrated poem by the Seventeenth Century English poet, essayist and courtier of King James I. To cut a long story short, Overbury was imprisoned in the Tower of London by King James for disrespect in 1613 - and slowly poisoned under the orders of Lady Essex, mistress of Lord Rochester . As Robert Carr, soon to become favourite to the King, Rochester was originally Overbury's best friend, but they fell out over the latter's affair with the youthful and already infamous countess of Essex who was led to believe that the poem had been written to open Lord Rochester's eyes to her defects. The murder conspiracy was uncovered after Overbury's death and Lady Essex was brought to trial with other conspirators, whom she had enlisted. Her accomplices were executed but she was pardoned, although she had pleaded guilty. This edition of one of the most widely popular books of the 17th century - its popularity hugely boosted by the notoriety of the whole messy business - contains numerous elegies to the unfortunate poet as well as the lengthy essay, entitled 'Characters or wittie descriptions of the properties of sundry persons,'much of which was not written by Overbury himself. There are 76 characters described here from every level of society. Characterisations include a good woman, a Chamber- maid and milk- maid as well as a tinker, hypocrite and sailor, and even a French cook and a drunken Dutchman. This copy includes other essay fragments - spurious additions to the snowball of Overbury's works … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Contemporary paper boards. Edges uncut and for the greater part unopened. 8o, pag.: lvi, 360 pp.; [2] A-T8, pag.: 304 pp. With an engr. portr. of John Locke by Antonio Baratti. Excellent copy of this rare edition in the original publisher's covers as issued. Rare edition of An Essay concerning Humane Understanding by the British philosopher John Locke (1632-1704). In the Latin translation by the German teacher G.H. Thiele. The editio princeps of Locke's masterpiece about the extend of human knowledge was printed in London in 1690. It took until 1701 for the first complete Latin translation, by Richard Burridge, to appear in London as well. Other Latin editions are known to be published in 1709 (Leipzig), 1729 (Amsterdam), 1731 (Leipzig) and 1741 (Leipzig). Christopherson does not mention this 1758 edition; we could trace only two other copies (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and Pennsylvania State University). [1] a-c8 d4, A-Y8 Z4.B0140.".
