Dialogo...sopra I due Massimi Sistemi del Mondo Tolemaico, e Copernicano

Finely engraved frontis. by Stephano della Bella showing Aristotle, Ptolemy, & Copernicus and several woodcut diagrams & illus. in the text. 5 p.l. (including frontis.), 458, [32] pp. 4to, attractive modern brown morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spine lettered in gilt, t.e.g. Florence: G.B. Landini, 1632. First edition and an excellent, fresh, and large copy; the famous frontispiece is a rich impression with generous margins. Our copy is much less browned than is usual with this book. "The Dialogo was designed both as an appeal to the great public and as an escape from silence. In the form of an open discussion between three friends -- intellectually speaking, a radical, a conservative, and an agnostic -- it is a masterly polemic for the new science. It displays all the great discoveries in the heavens which the ancients had ignored; it inveighs against the sterility, wilfulness, and ignorance of those who defend their systems; it revels in the simplicity of Copernican thought and, above all, it teaches that the movement of the earth makes sense in philosophy, that is, in physics. Astronomy and the science of motion, rightly understood, says Galileo, are hand in glove. There is no need to fear that the earth's rotation will cause it to fly to pieces. So Galileo picked up one thread that led straight to Newton. The Dialogo, far more than any other work, made the heliocentric system a commonplace."-Printing & the Mind of Man 128. From the library of Jacob Bronowski (1908-74), the mathematician, biologist, historian of science, poet, and inventor. ❧ Cinti 89. Dibner, Heralds of Science, 8. Horblit 18c.       1632. MONTAIGNE, Michel de. John Florio, trans. THE ESSAYES OR, MORALL, POLITIKE, AND MILITARIE DISCOURSES OF LORD MICHAEL DE MONTAIGNE, Knight of the noble Order of Saint Michael, and one of the Gentlemen in Ordinary of the French Kings Chamber. The Third Edition. Whereunto is now newly added an Index of the principall matters and personages mentioned in this Book. London: Printed for M. Flesher, for Rich : Royston, in Ivie-lane next the exchequer office, 1632. Third edition of the first English-language translation by John Florio (the first edition being 1603). Folio (in 6s). 29 cm. [14],631,[13] pp. There are some errors in pagination, including the last page, which is numbered 131. Engraved architectural title-page by Martin Droeshout, which faces the explanation leaf "To the Beholder of This Title," has been trimmed close to the plate, inlaid in a leaf, and bound in. Separate title-pages for the second and third books, dated 1631. Clean text but for Q4&5, which have shallow soiling at bottom edges. In addition, Q5 and three other leaves have small chips in margins which do not affect text. Contemporary blind-ruled calf boards were skillfully rebacked, with the original elaborately gilt-tooled backstrip laid-down, but the upper joint is now cracked and the lower joint is starting. Nonetheless, the binding is sound and not unattractive. Armorial bookplate of Hugh Cecil Lowther, fifth Earl of Lonsdale, on front pastedown. Montaigne's Essayes is one of the great books of world literature and a seminal work in the development of modern thought. His essays were the epitome of sixteenth century skeptical philosophy and gave direction to European philosophy in the next century, from Descartes to Newton. Florio's translation was familiar to all the leading literary figures of the seventeenth century, such as Jonson, Burton, and Browne, not to mention Sir Francis Bacon, who developed the English version of Montaigne's new essay format.       Apud Iohann Ianssonium Amsterdam:: Apud Iohann Ianssonium,. 1632.. 16mo: a - f^8 A - 2Q^8. 2Q8 a blank. 4-1/2" x 2-1/4". 1st Edition in Latin. [96], 621, [3 (blank)] pp. First word of title transliterated from Greek.. Bound in plain binder's board.. Bookplates to front eps ("Comte Etienne Karolyi").A VG copy.. Bohme a German philosophical mystic who had a profound influence on such later intellectual movements as idealism and Romanticism. Born of poor parents in Goerlitz Germany, as a boy he tended cattle, later becoming a shoemaker, marrying & fathering 4 children. Boehme, at the robust age of 37 in 1612, wrote his first treatise Aurora, oder Die Morgenroete in Aufgang. In 1613, an unauthorized copy of the manuscript was copied and circulated by Karl von Ender. Its reception "raised him out of his homely sphere, and made him the centre of a local circle of liberal thinkers, considerably above him in station and culture." However, the local pastor primarius of Gorlitz, Gregorius Richter, leveled a charge of heresy. The local muncipal council administered an admonishment to no further "meddle in such matters." This charge Boehme [publicly] followed for 5 years. In 1618 Boehme again started writing expository & polemical treatises. The majority of his works were written, though not formally published, from 1619 - 1624. A second major work, Der Weg zu Christo, was published in 1624, and signaled a renewal of clerical hostility. Boehem, however, was destined to suffer but a short period of this second persecution; he died of an illness on 17 November 1624. Boehme has been said to have a "fertility of ideas" and a "trasncendent greatness of religious insight." Boehme was studied by Sir Isaac Newton and influenced the work Henry More, as well as [and especially] William Law [1686 - 1761]. "Poets such as Milton, Tieck, Novalis and William Blake found inspiration in Boehme's writings. ... Hegel went as far as to say that Boehme was 'the first German philosopher.'" [Wiki]. .
