(Huang Funchi) (ed.)
(Ji ya zhai), 1627. First edition. Softcover. g- to vg-. Small folios. 12.5x8.5". Unpaginated. Four softcover volumes housed in a dark blue cloth portfolio, with a pink paper label on the front cover and bone fasteners. Softcover volumes in dark blue paper wrappers, with gold string-tied bindings. French-fold leaves. The volumes have been rebound, with the original sheets re-backed onto newer paper, with some marginal loss. The collection contains the first 4 vols, of a total of 8, published during the reigns of the Wanli Emperor (萬曆年間) (1572-1620) and the emperor Tian Qi (天啓年間) (1621-1627) containing poetry, calligraphy and painting. The gorgeous woodblock prints in b/w and the masterful calligraphy of this late Ming-era collection are based on work of Tang-era poets, including 王維 (Wang Wei), 元稹 (Yaun Zhen), 李白 (Lee Bai), 杜甫 (Du Fu), and 白居易 (Bai Juyi). The first three volumes, contain calligraphy by noted artists 董其昌 (Dong Qichang) and 陳繼儒 (Chen Jiru). Most of the illustrations, which feature landscapes, figures, and other detailed natural imagery, are by 蔡冲寰 (Cai Chong Huan) with the woodblock printing done by engraver 劉次泉 (Liu Ci Quan). We have compared our set to three digitized copies and have found a number of discrepancies. According to the work of a Chinese graduate student at Nanjing Normal University in 2014, the original first editions of the work were printed without any publisher's information or table of contents*, corresponding to the state of our own copy. This fact and some other differences lead us to believe th … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRASSI, Orazio [pseudonym: Lothario SARSIO SIGENSANO].
Matthaeus Nuccius, Naples, 1627. First Italian edition, very rare, of Grassi?s counter-polemic against Galileo?s Il saggiatore (1623). This is the concluding work in the series of publications which document the ?controversy of the comets,? one of the most infamous polemics in the history of science. According to Drake, these texts ?deserve study for their bearing upon the origin of modern scientific method ? The controversy is of both scientific and philosophical significance because it was in this connection that Galileo disclosed his conception of scientific method.? The Ratio ponderum was first published at Paris the year before, but that edition was very unsatisfactory (see below) ? the present Naples edition ?took care of the numerous errors and omissions in the mangled Paris edition? (Feingold, p. 152). It was dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Boncompagni, the Archbishop of Naples (which explains why it was published there). Galileo preferred not to reply to the Ratio ponderum, and thus the controversy came to an end. ?The dispute over comets had consequences of great significance both to Galileo and to science in general, as the favorable reception of [Il saggiatore] led him to proceed with the publication of the much more famous Dialogue, for which he was later imprisoned by the Inquisition. That fateful event was in turn intimately connected with the rift between Galileo and the Jesuits, which was widened and made permanent, if indeed it did not originate, in the public dispute about comets. Thus the controversy is closely linked with some of the most dramatic event … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antoine de Montchrestien
A Rouen : Chez Pierre de la Motte, 1627. (1bl), (8), 480, (1bl). [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Company of Stationers, 1627. Small Octavo. Bound in period-style full panelled calf; with decorative blind tooling to boards, raised bands and gilt titles to spine. Binding is tight and shows well. Internally clean, with two very minor incidents of worm damage, showing in margin from title to p.37 and at hinge pp.12-105. A pleasing seventeenth century copy of one of the most significant works in the British legal tradition, commonly understood to be the first textbook on property law. Written during the reign of Edward IV and first published in 1481, Edward Coke, the supreme jurist of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, described it as "the ornament of the Common Law, and the most perfect and absolute work that ever was written in any humane science", which may suggest something of the esteem in which it has been held. DRAYTON (Michaell)
London Printed for William Lee, 1627. FIRST EDITION. Folio, 246 x 143 mms., pp. [xii], 218, recently rebound in full antique-style sheepskin, gilt spine, red morocco label; lacks portrait, but a very good copy. Drayton (1563 - 1631) was one of England's most prolific early authors, and the first incarnation of this volume was a poem on the battle of Agincourt published in 1600. "A volume of miscellaneous works, The Battaile of Agincourt, appeared in 1627. Drayton may have hurried the title poem into print as background marching music for the duke of Buckingham's imminent campaign in France. The collection's best-known poem is 'Nimphidia, the Courte of Fayrie', an entertaining mock-heroic; its fascination with the materials, costumes, and stuffs of its minuscule fairies has been read as satirizing the court's obsession with fancy dress and imported goods. In the same volume are 'The Shepheards Sirena', which combines nostalgia for Elizabeth with anti-court satire, an interminable complaint by Margaret, wife of Henry VI, and 'The Quest for Cynthia'. " Were he alive today, Drayton might have some sympathy for men accused of sexual harassment: "On 8 March 1627 Drayton appeared before the London consistory court in St Paul's, accused of 'suspicion of incontinency with Mary Peters, wife of John Peters'. Elizabeth Welsh, keeper of a lodging house in St Clement Danes, had charged that one January afternoon in 1627 a maidservant had seen Mary Peters raise her skirts, 'unto her navel before Mr Michael Drayton and that she clapt her hand on her privy part and said it was a sound and a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Simon Halbmayer, Nuremberg. First complete edition and the first edition of the fourth part (the first part was published in 1616, the first three parts together in 1618). The first book is a treatise on general mathematics and the principles of geometry. The second deals entirely with techniques of surveying. The third part describes a surveying instrument (the 'mensula praetoriana') invented by the scientific instrument maker Johann Praetorius (Richter) and its application. The fourth part is in fact a German translation of Curzio Casati’s 'Geometricum problema' (1602). He shows himself to be particularly well acquainted with the contemporary Italian mathematical literature, giving in particular a resumé of some of the work of Pietro Antonio Cataldi: "The use of limited continued fractions in the expression of a relationship between large numbers is found in the 'Geometria practica' of Daniel Schweneter (1627), published soon after Cataldi’s death." (DSB, III, p.128). Cantor, Vorlesungen II, p.666-70; Zeitlinger/Sotheran, 2nd suppl, 2421; Poggendorff II 878. Four parts in one volume. 4to: 200 x 154 mm. Contemporary vellum. With two engraved and two woodcut titles, and two engraved portraits. Some browning throughout. Liechtenstein book plate to front paste down and "Anno 1640" inscribed at top. (12), 296; (8), 198, (6); (12), 101, (3); 83, (5) pp. [Attributes: First Edition]

Peccana, Alessandro
In Verona, Nella Stamparia di Angelo Tamo, [1627], Prima edizione, rarissima a trovarsi sul mercato. «Probabile unica edizione» (Piantanida). Cm. 12, pp. (24) 767 (1). Bellissimo frontespizio inciso in rame raffigurante Cardano. Cfr. Iccu; Willems, 272; Brunet I, 1573..
