SPEED, John.
London, George Humble, 1627. Coloured. 390 x 515mm. An important map of Middlesex by John Speed, derived from the unpublished map by John Norden. engraved by Jodocus Hondius in 1610, the map has inset town plans of London and Westminster (also after Norden's surveys published 1593) and views of St Paul's and Westminster Cathedral. Norden was a contemporary of Saxton and was the first to plan a series of county histories; however he failed to attract sufficient backing for his enterprise and never completed it. His surveying was superior to Saxton's, and Speed preferred to use Norden as a source where possible. SKELTON: 18.

First quires uniformly browned and likely supplied, two leaves washed, else a nice copy of this rare book.- First edition, including the beautiful engraved title, which is not always present. Important history of the Provinces of current Colombia and Venezuela, one of the earliest ever published focused on that region. Although it says "first part" nothing else was published in the 17thor 18thcentury, although manuscripts of continuations do exist. Simon was well-informed on the region and the modern expeditions and events, having arrived there in 1604 to teach, he accompanied Juan de Borja y Armendia, President of the Real Audiencia de Santa Fe de Bogota amongst other official positions, in a campaign of pacification of the Pijao people between 1605 and 1615. The book, quite large in it's contents, contains the most varied subjects (native population, history, local customs, natural history, etc.), and to-date is one of our most genuine and primitive sources of information of Colombia and Venezuela. "J'ai vu la deuxième et la troisième partie de cet ouvrage en manuscrit de la main de l'auteur, au couvent des franciscains de Santa Fé de Bogota. Artist: Rossi/ Sanson Giacomo Giovanni/ Nicolas ( - 1691 ) Rom; issued in: Rome; date: ca 1677, 1627. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 40 x 56; - description : Decorative and detailed map of total Asia and Southeast Asia with a title cartouche. The map provides an excellent depiction of the Philippines and China and it provides a fine detailed treatment of Asia, based upon the work of Nicolas Sanson. The region north of Japan portrays Hokkaido as a part of a large, boot-shaped peninsula attached to the mainland. The name Ieco, which usually is associated with Hokkaido, is here identified with a large landmass to the east that is separated from the peninsula by the St. d'Vries. Korea is shown as a long thin peninsula in the manner of the Mercator-Hondius version. Asia is Earth's largest and most populous continent, located primarily in the Eastern and Northern Hemispheres. The history of Asia can be seen as the distinct histories of several peripheral coastal regions: East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, linked by the interior mass of the Central Asian steppes. The coastal periphery was home to some of the world's earliest known civilizations, each of them developing around fertile river valleys. The civilizations in Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley and the Yellow River shared many similarities. These civilizations may well have exchanged technologies and ideas such as mathematics and the wheel. Other innovations, such as writing, seem to have been developed individually in each area. Cities … [Click Below for Full Description]

黃鳳池 (Huang Funchi) (ed.)
杭州市 (Hangzhou): 集雅齋 (Ji ya zhai), 1627. First edition. Softcover. g- to vg-. Small folios. 12.5x8.5". Unpaginated. Four softcover volumes housed in a dark blue cloth portfolio, with a pink paper label on the front cover and bone fasteners. Softcover volumes in dark blue paper wrappers, with gold string-tied bindings. French-fold leaves. The volumes have been rebound, with the original sheets re-backed onto newer paper, with some marginal loss. The collection contains the first 4 vols, of a total of 8, published during the reigns of the Wanli Emperor (萬曆年間) (1572-1620) and the emperor Tian Qi (天啓年間) (1621-1627) containing poetry, calligraphy and painting. The gorgeous woodblock prints in b/w and the masterful calligraphy of this late Ming-era collection are based on work of Tang-era poets, including 王維 (Wang Wei), 元稹 (Yaun Zhen), 李白 (Lee Bai), 杜甫 (Du Fu), and 白居易 (Bai Juyi). The first three volumes, contain calligraphy by noted artists 董其昌 (Dong Qichang) and 陳繼儒 (Chen Jiru). Most of the illustrations, which feature landscapes, figures, and other detailed natural imagery, are by 蔡冲寰 (Cai Chong Huan) with the woodblock printing done by engraver 劉次泉 (Liu Ci Quan). We have compared our set to three digitized copies and have found a number of discrepancies. According to the work of a Chinese graduate student at Nanjing Normal University in 2014, the original first editions of the work were printed without any publisher's information or table of contents*, corresponding to the state of our own copy. This fact and some other differences lead us to believe that our volumes a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Speed was born at Farndon, Cheshire and went into the tailoring business of his father, Samuel, later in life. While working in London, Speed was a tailor and member of a corresponding guild, and came to the attention of "learned" individuals. These individuals included Sir Fulke Greville, who subsequently made him an allowance to enable him to devote his whole attention to research. By 1598 he had enough patronage to leave his manual labour job and "engage in full-time scholarship". As a reward for his earlier efforts, Queen Elizabeth granted Speed the use of a room in the Custom House. Speed, was, by this point, as "tail … [Click Below for Full Description]

According to the editor's conceit, the original text of the work was found in the belly of a fish. On June 23, 1626, scholar and theologian Dr. Joseph Mede (or Mead) of Christ's College, Cambridge, was walking through Cambridge's market, when a fishwife found a book wrapped in sailcloth inside the stomach of a codfish caught at King's Lynn. These texts were attributed to protestant reformer John Frith (1503-1533), who was imprisoned in a fish- cellar in Oxford and later burned at the stake. "Attributed as a whole to John Frith in part 1, which is sometimes attributed to Thomas Goad. Part 2, 'The preparation to the Crosse and to death,' is a reprint of 'Of the preparation to the Crosse, and to deathe,' 1540 (STC 11393), translated by and sometimes attributed to Richard Tracy as well as to Frith. GENEVE: "Novum Testamentum Graece" cum vulgata interpretatione latina graeci contextus lineis inserta. BLAEU, Willem
[Amsterdam, c.1627]. [Amsterdam,, c.1627].. Engraved chart. Rare chart of west Cornwall from The Lizard to Land End, published in Blaeu's rare pilot 'Zeespiegel Inhoudende Een...'. The ‘Zeespeigel' was the second of Blaeu's great pilot guides: the first, ‘Het Licht der Zeevaert', was published in various editions and languages between 1608 and 1630. Blaeu's copyright to this work appears to have run out in 1618, and from 1620 Johannes Janssonius was publishing his own counterfeit versions. Blaeu responded to this threat from his rival by publishing the present work in 1623. The new work covered much the same geographical area, i.e. the northern, eastern (the Netherlands to the White Sea) and western (the Netherlands to the Barbary Coast) navigations, however on a much larger scale and with more than twice the number of charts (111 compared to the Zeevaert's 42). Although the new pilot proved hugely successful and would continue to be published for the next 30 years, its practical application aboard ship accounts for its extreme rarity today.
