Roma, per l'Erede del Zannetti, 1627. in-4. 26pp. Cartonnage du XIXs. Edition Originale. NIESS, Johann
Dilingae: D. Mannasser excudebat, 1627. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Johann Niess was a 17th-century Jesuit priest who is best remembered for his alphabetical reference books theological and religious disciplines. He wrote 'Alphabetum Christi' which was a set of virtues and qualities of Christ presented in alphabetical order, while 'Alphabetum Diaboli' was the same, but for the qualities of the devil, sin, and demonology. Niess describes the horrors of human vices, the dangers of disobedience and unfaithfulness, and fearing the devil himself. Niess provides a detailed vision of hell which became very popular throughout the 17th-century. [Attributes: First Edition]

John Taylor's enormously influential biblical verse paraphrases, designed chiefly for the use of children, were printed six times during his lifetime – separately in 1614 (twice), 1616, 1627, and 1631, and once in the Workes of 1630. They then fell out of use, having a second lease of life only after Ilive's reprint of 1693 and becoming extremely popular in eighteenth-century America. The editions of 1614 and 1616 bore dedications to Queen Anna (in the Old Testament) and Prince Charles (in the New); here there are new dedications to Queen Mary and to Charles as King: ' And though the Volume, and the Worke be small, yet it containes the summe of all in ALL.'All the early editions of Taylor's 'thumb bible' are of the greatest rarity. Of the editions of 1614 three copies are known: the first, with the title reading Verbum Sempiternae, is at Aberdeen only (wanting 19 leaves); the second, corrected to Verbum Sempiternum, is not … [Click Below for Full Description]

1627. Acquaforte misure: mm 152 x 239 Incisore e disegnatore francese. Callot in. et fecit".

Acquaforte, circa 1627, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Martyrdom of twenty-three Franciscan monks crucified in Japan, with crowd attending the torture, and soldiers piercing the monks with spears; St John the Baptist and angels appear in the sky, throwing laurel wreaths, palm leaves and flowers at the martyrs. c.1627 Example of the first state of two, before the imprint of Israel Silvestre. Etching, signed at lower left. A great impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, tirmmed to the platemark and laid down on antique paper, an old restore at the lower right corner, otherwise very good condition. Lettered with name of etcher and two lines of inscription in French: 'Le Pourtraict des premier 23 Martire. Observantin de S. François'. Probably executed on the occasion of the beatification of the monks, in 1627. See cat. exhib. 'Jacques Callot' (Nancy, 1992), No.632.
