It is very precise and erudite on various alloys of lead and tin, and gold, among the Romans in particular, on the use of currencies and the system on which they are based. Thomas Gataker
London : Printed by John Haviland, 1627-01-01. 2nd. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. Bound in modern fine leather. Gilt spine. 4 raised bands. Fine binding and cover. Late 18th-century armorial bookplate and signature of Sir Richard Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone, 1st Baronet. Clean, unmarked pages with some toning. STC 11671; ESTC S102918. <br><br>Originally published in 1619, Gataker's landmark work on lotteries, provoked controversy for its alleged advocacy of the gambling and gaming. Using a great number of historical examples from the writers of antiquity and the Bible, he set out to distinguish the lot and casual events from divine lots. It was Gataker's lenience towards lotteries for sport that drew the ire of his contemporaries, especially that of James Balmford. Balmford's argument was the Puritan line that all lots were invoking the power of God, a stance that Gataker himself deplored, that therefore all lotteries were wrong. Gataker has the "distinction of being the first to suggest the employment of random-selection devices as a means of resolving the problem of indifferent choice in public policy situations" (Rescher, Studies in the History of Logic, 2006), a half-century prior to Pascal's scientific treatise on probability and Fermat.

TACCHINI, Pietro (1838-1905). -
In - 4. First edition of a scarce work. The first to calculate the transit of Venus was Kepler in 1627 and this rare event, which happens twice within a few years time but then over a century goes by before it occurs again, has always been used for important astronomical observations. The transit of 1875 was not visible in Europe, therefore a group of Italian scientist led by Tacchini went to India. «The principal aim of this expedition was to make extremely accurate observations of the contacts of the disk of Venus with the limb of the sun by using the spectroscope» (DSB XIII, 232). With 13 lithograph plates, 3 folding, 8 printed in colour. Orig. cloth slightly worn.

(Fürst, I, 248. Steinschneider, 'Catalogus librorum hebræorum in bibliotheca Bodleiana', 569). Quelques rousseurs. KEPLER, Johannes.
First edition of Kepler's logarithmic tables, the basis of his monumental Rudolphine Tables, constructed by means of his own original method. Of the greatest rarity, especially complete with the correction leaf and the second part, which gives examples of the application of logarithms and details of their construction. Only one other copy of this work has appeared at auction in the past fifty years.<br/><br/> <i>Provenance</i>: The Earls of Macclesfield, Shirburn Castle, with engraved bookplate, shelf-mark on front pastedown, and blind-stamped Macclesfield crest on blank margins of first three leaves. <br/><br/> It was through the use of these tables that Kepler was able to complete his monumental <i>Tabulae Rudolphinae</i> (1627), the superiority of which "constituted a strong endorsement of the Copernican system, and insured the tables' dominance in the field of astronomy throughout the seventeenth century" (Norman). But logarithms played an even more important role in Kepler's astronomical work, since without them he may never have discovered his third law of planetary motion. Kepler discovered this law early in 1618, at the same time that he first had access to tables of logarithms (see below). Moreover, his initial formulation of the third law was (to use modern terminology) in terms of a log-log plot, rather than the more familiar terms of squared periods and cubed distances: "The proportion between the periodic times of any two planets is precisely one and a half times the proportion of the mean distances" (<i>Werke</i> VI, 302). "In a sense, logarithms played a role … [Click Below for Full Description]

[France]: 1627. - Single sheet, float mounted and framed (sheet size: 6 5/8 x 4 ½ inches; framed size: 11 ¾ x 9 ½ inches). Extremely fine etching of the Martyrs of Japan, with faint but visible thread lines and a watermark of an anchor, signed and identified within the plate. A strong impression of Callot's famous depiction of the 26 Christian martyrs of Japan, produced on the occasion of their beatification. The martyrs are displayed on crosses, their sides pierced by a lance. In the foreground on the left is a man on a horse; to the right there are soldiers sitting in the shade. In the sky, cherubim are guided by St. John the Baptist, preparing palms and crows for the martyrs. In the left corner within the plate it is signed "Callot fec." Along the bottom margin it reads, "Le Pourtraict des premier 23 Martire mis en Croix par la predicaon. de la S. foy au Giappon | soubs l'Empe Taicosam en la Cité de Mongasachi, de lordre des freres mineurs Observantin de S. BLAEU, Willem
c.1627]., [Amsterdam, - Blaeu's rare chart of west Cornwall Engraved chart. Rare chart of west Cornwall from The Lizard to Land End, published in Blaeu's rare pilot 'Zeespiegel Inhoudende Een.'.The 'Zeespeigel' was the second of Blaeu's great pilot guides: the first, 'Het Licht der Zeevaert', was published in various editions and languages between 1608 and 1630. Blaeu's copyright to this work appears to have run out in 1618, and from 1620 Johannes Janssonius was publishing his own counterfeit versions. Blaeu responded to this threat from his rival by publishing the present work in 1623. The new work covered much the same geographical area, i.e. the northern, eastern (the Netherlands to the White Sea) and western (the Netherlands to the Barbary Coast) navigations, however on a much larger scale and with more than twice the number of charts (111 compared to the Zeevaert's 42). Although the new pilot proved hugely successful and would continue to be published for the next 30 years, its practical application aboard ship accounts for its extreme rarity today.

MAYNWARING, Roger
Printed By I.H. For Richard Badger, London 1627 - [2], 33pp, [1], 56pp. Nineteenth-century morocco backed marbled boards. Rubbed, with loss to head of spine and corners. Soiling/spotting to title and final leaf. Original stab-holes to gutter margin. Nineteenth-century institutional blind-stamp to title, A2 and final leaf. Roger Maynwaring (1589/90-1653), bishop of St. Davids. Following a promising academic career at All Souls, Maynwaring, patronage ensured a perpetual curacy at St Katherines Cree, Aldates in the City of London, and other clerical positions in the capital before proceeding BD and DD in 1625. Appointed a royal chaplain in the same year, his loyalty was proven beyond doubt in the wake of protest at Charles I's imposition of forced loans in 1626/7 when he preached two sermons especially supportive of absolute divine right. In promoting the rights of a King above the rule of common or statute law, and advocating absolute obedience to the King's rule in the particular circumstances of forced loans rather than in a general sense, his thought was verging on contemporary political extremism. Charles, in delight at his young chaplain's words, ordered the publication of both - hence the inclusion of 'By His Majesties Special Command' on the title - against the better judgement of Laud. Public and parliamentary reaction ensued: Maynwaring and his works were investigated by a committee on religion in 1628, he was charged in the strongest terms with insulting parliament, fined, imprisoned, disbarred from holding ecclesiastical office, the reprinting of this work banned, … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEED, JOHN.
No place or date but London [1627] - Hand-coloured copper-engraving, 15 x 20 inches. A fine, strong impression, the centre fold has been strengthened on verso with some minor repairs evident. The colouring, which has some age but is not original, is very attractive. A fine example with English text on verso. John Speed's justly renowned map of the county from the second edition of his great early 17th century atlas of the British Isles. His survey was based on the earlier work of Philip Symonson with the addition of his own embellishments, and separate plans of Canterbury and Rochester. One of the most attractive and decorative maps of Kent. KENT MAPS KENT
