Jacques CALLOT (Nancy 1592 - 1635)
Etching, signed at bottom right. From Le Combat a la Barrière. The prints in the Combat series were created to commemorate a tournament sponsored by Duke Charles IV of Lorraine, in his palace at Nancy, late in 1626, in honor of his beautiful cousin the Duchess of Chevreuse who was in exile in Lorraine after the discovery of her role in the plot against Richelieu. Excellent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "double C ..." watermark (Lieure 29), trimmed to marginal line, in very good conditions. Lieure 581 ; Meaume 498 240 152

BELLARMINO, Roberto.
Vinciana 4727, altre ediz. Guigard I, 328. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BOYLE, ROBERT.
, . . Fulton 22and pp. 9ff, 110a, and pp. 73-74; cf. DSB I, pp. 377-379. Interesting convolute of these three very rare Latin translations of three major works by Robert Boyle (1627-1691), the best-known English scientist of his day and the greatest experimental scientist of the mid-seventeenth century. Although Boyle's first scientific interest was chemistry, this is the author's first published scientific work - on pneumatics -, the one that established his fame. The work is also known as the Spring and weight of the air. With a translation of A defence of the doctrine touching the spring and weight of the air (first published together with the 2nd edition of the New experiments in London, 1662, in which he developed this last discovery into a quantitative relationship: that volume varies inversely with pressure, rightly called Boyle's law).Book block almost loose. In the first pamphlet Saldenus tries to restore the peace between the Remonstrants and Contra-Remonstrants, and in the second he discusses the religious dispute in the Dutch Protestant Church concerning the person of Jean de Labadie, a 17th century French pietist. A third pamphlet bound in between is replaced by modern blank leaves. Good copies.
