FINCH, Henrie [i e Henry]
London, printed for the Societie of Stationers. 1627. 8vo., (8) + 496 + 499 - 506 + (16)pp., including the first and final blanks, with a very slight old waterstain on first three or four leaves and occasionally elsewhere, contemporary calf, ruled in blind, skilfully and appropriately rebacked and restored, the spine with raised bands, and title label. A very good copy indeed. First edition in English. STC 10871. Sweet & Maxwell I, p.238 #10. A classic text in English law. Sir Henry Finch (1558-1625), serjeant-at-law, was engaged with Bacon, Noy, and others on an abortive attempt at codifying the statute law. 'As an exposition of the common law it was not superseded, on common law, until Blackstone, and on jurisprudence, until Austin'. [Walker, Oxford Companion,> p.471. 'The English version is the product of second thoughts, and a great improvement upon the French; and it is obviously the version that has influenced subsequent writers. ..... Finch's book is a pioneer book of the institutes of English law.' [Holdsworth H.E.L. V.pp.399-400]. 'Finch's Law>, till the publication of Blackstone's Commentaries,> was regarded as the best elementary book to be placed in the hands of the law students. It is one of the few attempts that have been made to reduce the common law into system; and the author prided himself ve … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ferdinand Iii, Holy Roman Emperor.
Ferdinand I I I , Holy Friedrich Wilhelm II, King of Prussia., 1627. Ferdinand I I I , Holy Friedrich Wilhelm II, King of Prussia.. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1627. Paper. (Estate of John F. Lewis). Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor. Document Signed. 5 September, 1627.1 piece. Folio, docketed. The manuscript above is one among many important manuscripts which John Frederick Lewis, a highly regarded philanthropist, lawyer, and early 20th-century collector, used as primary source material for a comprehensive genealogy of his forbears. His chronological narrative was meant to chart the various world-historical developments and circumstances which ultimately led to the confluence of Mr. Lewis' Continental ancestors and those of the Mayflower Colony, and it extended even to his own lifetime. Housed in altogether fifteen portfolio volumes, the project was the culmination of decades of painstaking research and discerning collecting of the highest order. Most of the manuscripts in Mr. Lewis' collection have not appeared at auction for a century, or more, as evidenced by the clipped catalog descriptions which accompany them; Signed by Author .

Littleton, Sir Thomas
1627. Littleton's Tenures in English Littleton, Sir Thomas [1402-1481]. Littletons Tenures in English, Lately Perused and Amended. London: Printed for the Companie of Stationers, 1627. 142, [2] ff. Collates complete. Octavo (5-1/4" x 3-1/2"). Contemporary sheep with later calf rebacking, binding varnished, blind rules to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine, endpapers renewed, early repair to front board. Some rubbing to joints and spine ends, corners somewhat worn, shallow scuffing to boards, hinges starting. Light toning to text, faint dampstaining and foxing to a few leaves, tiny tear to foot of title page mended with archival tape. Early doodles to front endleaves and title page, interior otherwise clean. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown. An appealing copy. * Written during the reign of Edward IV [1442-1483] and first published around 1481, Littleton's Tenures is probably the most revered treatise in the history of the common law. Much admired for its learning and style, it is concerned with tenures and other issues relating to real property. This venerable work, which Coke called "the ornament of the Common Law, and the most perfect and absolute work that ever was written in any humane science," is considered a landmark because it renounced the principles of Roman law (and Latin) in favor of guidelines and doctrines drawn from the Year Books and, when necessary, hypothetical cases. OCLC locates two copies in law libraries (Harvard, Library of Congress). Holdsworth, A History of English Law II:573. English Short-Title Catalogue S108678.
