RAY, John.
Blackmer 1397; Cat. Lindley Lib. 365; Hünersdorff, pp. 1225-1226; Keynes, John Ray 92. First edition of a highly interesting collection of voyages to and in the Middle East and North Africa, edited and translated by the great English botanist John Ray (1627-1705), also a pioneer of classification systems in general. Volume one contains the first English translation of Leonard Rauwolf's Aigentliche Beschreibung der Raiß ... inn die Morgenländer (1582), describing his travels in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, the Holy Land and the Ottoman Empire. Rauwolf was the first Western traveller to describe coffee, and his description played an important role in the introduction of coffee into Europe. The second volume contains extracts from accounts of travels in the Middle East and North Africa by Pierre Belon, John Greaves, George Wheeler, Thomas Smith and some others. It includes a narrative of a caravan journey from Cairo to Mecca, a journey through Arabia and a detailed description of Mecca. Added are three catalogues by Ray of Oriental plants growing in Syria, Crete and Egypt, as well as the 3-page "Catalogue of books printed for, and are[!] to be sold by Sam. Smith and Benj. Walford, ... 1693.", not in all copies. With several owner's inscriptions and bookplates. All but the first few and last few quires somewhat browned, occasional faint water stains, otherwise in good condition. Interesting collection of voyages, compiled by the great botanist John Ray.

DIEU, Ludovicus de (editor).
Darlow & Moule 8962; Rahir 230; Smitskamp, Phil. orientalia 303; Willems 269. The first edition of any early text of the Book of Revelations in the ancient Syriac language, a book that had been lacking in the manuscripts followed by the earlier Syriac New Testaments. It is also the first book the Elzeviers printed with Syriac or any other "oriental" type, their earlier forays into printing with non-Latin types having been limited to Greek and Hebrew. The main text is set in two columns, with the Syriac text set in Syriac type on the outside and the Syriac text set in Hebrew type on the inside, an aid to scholars less familiar with the Syriac script. Two columns in smaller type at the foot provide the original Greek text and a literal Latin translation of the Syriac. The whole is well printed and laid out, showing why the Elzeviers were quickly gaining a reputation as the leading scholarly printers and publishers. In fine condition and with large margins. The binding is very slightly rubbed but still very good. A fine copy of an important work of biblical scholarship and a showpiece of the Elzevier's press at the beginning of its golden age.

KEPLER, Johannes - [BOULLIAU, Ismael (1605-1694)].
Ulm: Jonas Saur, 1627. 2 parts in one volume. Folio(13 2/8 x 9 inches). Roman and italic types, double column, printed shoulder notes (without sectional title-page to part 2 and "Sportula genethliacis") (occasional spotting). Engraved allegorical frontispiece of the Temple of Urania with astronomers, by George Celer after Kepler, LARGE ENGRAVED FOLDING MAP OF THE WORLD (27 x 15 2/8 inches to the neat line) (supplied), a few woodcut text diagrams, including a full-page of diagrams on k3v, woodcut initials. Eighteenth-century vellum (some worming). Provenance: probably from the library of Ismaël Boulliau, (1605 – 1694), French astronomer, with his meticulous scholarly marginalia throughout, (occasionally close-cropped affecting the text). First edition, second issue INCLUDING THE CELEBRATED WORLD-MAP "Nova orbis terrarum delineation", which was "conceived by the German cartographer Philip Eckebrecht at the request of his friend Johann Kepler" (Shirley), to be used with his "Tabulae Rudolphinae", engraved at Nuremberg by J.P. Walch and dated 1630 (but perhaps issued later). On his deathbed in 1601, Tycho Brahe urged Kepler to complete his long-projected astronomical tables, to be based on Tycho's mass of astronomical observations and named after their patron Rudolph II. As Brahe's successor in the post of imperial mathematician, Kepler's principal task was the preparation of these improved astronomical tables. He worked on them for years, with frequent interruptions.
