Georgio Draudio [Georg Draud]
Francofurti ad Moenum: Balthasaris Ostern, 1625. The original work was split into four continuously paginated sections and a supplement, in two volumes. The four sections had separate headers and were as follows: Libri Theologica, Libri Iuridici, Libri Medicorum and Libri Historici, Geographici et Politici. This volume contains the complete first section, Libri Theologica. In Latin. Though not the complete multi-volume work, any volume of this work is scarce. Might benefit from some work to the binding. Georg Draud, also styled George Draudius, was a German author and bibliographer. This work, his magnum opus, is a comprehensive catalogue of the titles of works which had, until the year 1624, appeared for sale at Frankfurt book fairs. A useful work, particularly as relates to early printed German texts, it updates Draud's earlier work of 1611 and arranges it more structurally and completely. In 19th century marbled paper covered boards. Externally, sound with bumping and rubbing. Front joint split with backstrip lifting. Front hinge strained. Rear joint tender with board loosening. Rear board has been bent and damage is evident to pastedown. Loss to corner of front free-endpaper. Internally, firmly bound aside from straining after preface. Pages browned with scattered foxing. Manuscript notes to a handful of pages, including signature to title page. Overall Condition: Good Only.

A letter from religious official "the most modest servant" Hermannus Averdunck to Pope Urban VIII. Among obligatory veneration and secondary petitions Hermannus complains about the shock imposed by Turks "..plebis suae corda ingenti Turcarum pauore concussa.." as well as asks for Pope's protection against other "Barbarians". The most important part of this letter is Averdunck petitions Urban VIII regarding canonization of Elizabeth Queen of Portugal: "..B. Elizabetha Portugallia Reginae, canonizationis solennitatem expectans..". Per Catholic Encyclopedia, Urban VIII canonized Queen Elizabeth of Portugal May 25th 1625, about two weeks past current petition. Dated May 8th 1625. Size: 10.5" x 8". See other items.

JOHN MINSHEU
London: printed by John Haviland, 1625. Second edition, second issue (STC 17945.5); folio, [4] & 760 columns; last leaf with bottom margin restored (no loss of any text), mild waterstain pervades the bottom gutter and margin throughout, with occasional deterioration of the paper; other modest stains throughout, mostly in the gutter; early 19th century quarter calf, brown morocco label; spine ends chipped, spine worn; a good copy. A famous polyglot dictionary, noted for its emphasis on etymology. "Quite apart from word-lore," writes Ernest Weekley, "Minsheu's work contains vast and various information for every kind of archaeologist, and I can think of few better single volumes for an intelligent Robinson Crusoe." Although this second edition omits two languages contained in the first edition of 1617 (Welsh and Portuguese), it is "preferred by some for its additions and corrections" (see Lowndes, 1569). The book is also a typographic wonder. The liberal use of fonts and design mark the beginning of the conscious design of the lexicon, as such. Kennedy 2718; Alston II, 107; Zaunmuller, p. 304; Graesse IV, p. 533; Vancil, p. 165.

DAHLBERG, Erik].
BAL 772; Berlin Kat. 2256; Lipperheide 1037; Warmholtz, Bibliotheca Historica Sueo-Gothica 207; for Dahlberg: Thieme-Becker VIII, p. 276. A magnificent series of hundreds of plates showing Sweden's (and Finland's) cities, gardens, palaces, churches and antiquities, executed by such prominent artists as Willem Swidde, Jean Marot, Adam Perelle and Jan van Aveelen. Erik Jönsson Dahlberg (1625-1703) was a military engineer and subsequently Director of Fortifications to King Karl X of Sweden. He spent three years in Frankfurt am Main, where he became acquainted with the brothers Matthaeus and Conrad Merian, then working on their epoch-making Theatrum Europeaum and their famous topographies, which greatly impressed Dahlberg. Indeed, his Suecia antiqua et hodierna "was modelled closely upon the format of Topographia Galliae (published 1655) but Dahlberg was also to improve upon his models in making Suecia more exhaustive than they" (BAL).Bookplate on pastedown. A few plates browned, one mounted on another leaf. Front hinge and head and foot of spine expertly restored.

The wealth and power of this small republic were stimulated by the fall of the merchant city of Antwerp, the economic and financial centre of North-Western Europe in 1585, and by the arrival, especially in Amsterdam, of numerous Flemish refugees. Among the refugees were also many Sefardic Jews, many of them merchants. These Jews had fled from Spain after the forming of the Iberian Union of the Kingdom of Spain and Portugal in 1580, and especially after the Reconquista in 1492. ACCOLTI Pietro (1578-1642)
PIETRO CECCONCELLI, 1625. [Click Below for Full Description]

A Lyon, chez Antoine Chard, 1625. 2 volumes in-8. 28ff. 912pp. 15ff. (1f.blanc). + 8ff. 589pp. (i.e. 591). 15ff. [Click Below for Full Description]

Double-page engraved map. This map was published in Samuel Purchas's 'Purchas his Pilgrimes', 1625, in Book IV to illustrate "English Northerne Navigations, and Discoveries, Relations of Greeneland, Groenland, The North-West Passage, and other Arctike Regions, with later Russian Occurrents", and is best known for being the progenitor of the myth of California as an island. Since it may have been published as early as 1622, it is also proposed as the first map to name "Hudsons bay", "Fretum Hudson", "Hudsons R", "Cape Cod", and "De la war bay" (Burden). 'Purchas his Pilgrimes' was a great geographical collection and a continuation and enlargement of Hakluyt's 'The Principal Navigations'. When Hakluyt died he left a large collection of voyages in manuscript which came into the hands of Purchas, who added to them many more voyages and travels. As an editor and compiler, Purchas sought to interest the general public of his day in the dramatic geographical discoveries that had taken place with remarkable rapidity over … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cavacci, Giacomo
In Typographica Pinelliana, Venetiis, 1625. [12],157,[4]pp. (lacking preliminary blank; [cross]4 bound out of place after pi4, and wanting the terminal signature a1-4, the latter printing "Posteritati ex rebus à Leonardo Donato Venetiarum."). Quarto. Modern half morocco and marbled boards. Engraved title and 32 engraved plates. Woodcut historiated initials and decorative tailpieces. Some spotting and occasional ink annotations (including an ownership signature on F2), several tiny holes in plate 2, scattered soiling and occasional discolorations or tidemarks, several old ink spots or smears in text; generally, in spite of the manifest imperfections, a reasonably sound copy. A handsomely illustrated edition of this collection of prose sketches and engraved portraits of religious hermits, edited by Lorenzo Pignoria, and with a prefatory poem by Goergius Camerarius. The fine engraved portraits of the hermits were executed by Francesco Valesio, and generally portray them in rustic settings, usually engaged in contemplation or prayer, or, as in the case of Didymus Celliensis, who is portrayed walking among all sorts of reptiles, including a three-headed dragon, engaged in their most characteristic acts. Another engraving, signed L.P., is a city view. Cavacci was a Benedictine monk in the monastery at Padua, and the first edition appeared in 1612. BRUNET I:1693. [Attributes: First Edition]

THOMAS A KEMPI
Duaci (Douai), Balthazaris Belleri, 1625.
