PURCHAS, Rev. Samuel
London: (1625). 300 x 340 mm., with tight margin along the left side from binding. One small split upper left with slight loss, another from a stitch lower left.; Although labelled "Greenland" this map depicts Spitsbergen in the arctic. It is flanked by whaling scenes at the sides and bottom. Samuel Purchas was a collector of records of voyages, theologian and author. The map is found in his 'Purchas His Pilgrimes ....' published in London by Henry Featherstone. It was a huge collection of records of voyages, many of which appear for the first time. This map accompanies the account of Robert Featherby who in 1613 accompanied the fleet of Benjamin Joseph to Spitsbergen. The following year 1614 he commanded a voyage on behalf of the Muscovy Company to nearby waters. There were a total of ten ships and two pinnaces one of which carried William Baffin. The images surrounding the map were most probably derived from Fotherby's watercolours, the "Seamorses" refer to whales and walruses. Shirley "Atlases in the British Library" G.Pur 1a no. 43 (incorrectly identifying the map as Greenland); Wieder, F.C. (Spitsbergen) 45.

Erpenius, Thomas / Elmacinus, G.
Leiden, Johannes Maire & Elzevier, 1625. (8), 372, 75, (1) SS. Mit Holzschnittvignette am Titel. Pergamentband der Zeit auf 4 durchzogenen Bünden. 4to. "The translation of the second part of the 'Tarih al-muslimin', an Arabic chronicle written by the Copt Georgios Al-Makin in the thirteenth century. The first part was already missing from the manuscript which Erpenius used. The text and translation were published by Golius, who had to edit the last two chapters, where Erpenius had broken off. There are three editions: a folio edition containing text and translation; this quarto edition of the translation only, and a small-octavo edition of the text only. The manuscript used for this edition was lent to Erpenius by the Palatine Library, a fact which he acknowledges in the dedication to King Frederick of Bohemia [...] Next to the title and the dedication, the preliminaries contain a short anonymous note introducting the work to the reader (no date, no mention of an Arabic text), and a list of the Khalifs mentioned in the translation" (Smitskamp). - Titel etwas gebräunt; kleine, alt hinterlegte Papierdefekte in der Kalifenliste, sonst wohlerhalte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Davila Padilla, A.
Juan de Meerbeque, Bruselas. "Fundamental source of information for the history of New Spain". Folio (305 mm x 194 mm). 4 folios + 654 p. + 3 folios. Contemporary vellum; some loss of paper on the last page affecting a few lines of text. SECOND EDITION, POSSIBLY THE BEST DUE TO TYPOGRAPHY AND CORRECTIONS OF FIRST EDITION. The first edition of this work appeared in Madrid in 1595 and is very rare. A third edition was published in 1634, titled Varia historia de la Nueva España y Florida. Dávila's work is considered the most important chronicle of the Dominican enterprise in New Mexico from 1526 to 1592, when attempts to publish the manuscript locally failed and it was then taken to Spain for publication. This work went on to become a much consulted reference and source on information for anyone writing on the region. It is packed with new information, largely based on the experiences of missionaries, many of which were contemporaries of Dávila and, in many cases, knew him personally. This wealth of information, with ample references on relations with Indians, their activities, beliefs, and conversion to Catholicism, make it a unique work. Included are chronicles and biographies of Fathers Domingo de Betanzos (founder and first Provincial of the Province), Domingo de la Cruz, Domingo de Santa María, Julián Garcés (first Bishop of Tlaxcala) Cristóbal de la Cruz, Pedro de Pravia, and Luis Cáncer (missionary in México and Florida, where he was martyred at the hands of natives). Dávila Padilla (1562-1604) is a native of Mexico, where he studied at university to earn the degree of … [Click Below for Full Description]

EUCLID / Ed. HARDY, Claude.
Paris: Melchior Mondiere, 1625. First edition. Very rare editio princeps of this important text by Euclid, his only work in pure geometry, other than the Elements, to have survived in Greek. It is here accompanied by a commentary, or rather an introduction, by Marinus of Naples (5th century AD), the pupil and biographer of Proclus. Although the importance of the first printing of any Euclidean text goes without saying, the work is of particular interest given contemporary developments in French geometry -- Descartes, Mersenne, Fermat, etc., to whose circle the translator Claude Hardy belonged. "The Data ... is closely connected with books I-VI of the Elements. It is concerned with the different senses in which things are said to be given. Thus areas, straight lines, angles, and ratios are said to be "given in magnitude" when we can make others equal to them. Rectilineal figures are "given in species" or "given in form" when their angles and the ratio of their sides are given. Points, lines, and angles are "given in position" when they always occupy the same place, and so on. After the definitions there follow ninety-four propositions, in which the object is to prove that if certain elements of a figure are given, other elements are also given in one of the defined senses" (DSB IV.524). The most interesting propositions are a group of four which are exercises in geometrical algebra corresponding to Elements 11.28, 29. Proposition 58 reads: "If a given area be applied to a given straight line so as to be deficient by a figure given in form, the breadths of the deficiency are … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carpenter, Nathaniel
Oxford: Printed by John Lichfield and William Turner...for Henry Cripps, 1625. Full contemporary calf, gilt-stamped lettering in second spine compartment (4 raised bands); two parts bound in one volume, 8vo (185x142mm); pp. [14], 274; [14], 286; with separate title-page to second book, 3 folding tables and numerous woodcut illustrations in text (including mariner's compasses, diagrams showing moon eclipses, terrestrial spheres, the solar system, and more). Table at p. 229 appears to be a high-quality facsimile. Spine chipped and tips perished; some scuffing to boards. Light dampstaining to second book, but overall internally nice and clean. First edition of "the most important early geography written by an Englishman, " Carpenter was the first to write on theoretical geography as distinuished from mathematical treatises on navigation or the repetition of narratives of travel. "The great merit of the treatise is Carpenter's blending of the solid part of the work of Aristotle and Ptolemy with that of the explorers and investigators of his own generation. He mentions the magnetical observation of Gilbert, Wright, Ridley, and Norman, and the cartographical improvements of Mercator and Wright" (Rosenbach 19: 110). California is mentioned as an island--a fifth continent. "California heretofore supposed to be a parte of the Westerne Continent, is since by a Spanish chart taken by the Hollanders, found to be a great Iland, " (II: 130). Very Good. [Dutch-Portuguese War]
Madrid: Bernardino de Guzman, 1625. [4]pp. In Spanish. Decorative woodcut initial on first page. Small folio. Dbd. Light contemporary annotations in margins of each page. Early folds. Loss, repaired in silk, to gutter and outer margins and along one fold, affecting a few characters of text on p.[4]. Overall very good. Rare Spanish newsletter reporting on recent victories by the Portuguese against the Dutch, the Persians, and others throughout Asia in 1624. The early 17th century saw the Dutch begin to present a serious threat to Portuguese power and commerce in the East, and by the mid- 1620s the Portuguese were beleaguered by constant attacks by the Dutch navy and its various Asian allies. The present Spanish newsletter celebrates one of the last great series of Dutch defeats by the Portuguese, who are lauded here by their Iberian partners as worldwide defenders of the Catholic faith holding their ground against overwhelming odds. Within a few years the Dutch would clearly gain the upper hand in Asia, both militarily and commercially, and by 1663 would control much of the Malabar Coast, Ceylon, Indonesia, Malacca, and European trade with Japan, leaving Portugal only with bases at Macao, East Timor, and Portuguese India. The newsletter discusses several naval battles off the coast of Persia, down the Malabar Coast to Ceylon, to Malacca, China, and Macao. A significant portion of the pamphlet describes the heavy Portuguese losses sustained by repeated attacks on Macao by the Dutch, who by this time had established a base in the Pescadores Islands. In the last paragraph … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEPLER, Johannes.
Marburg: Caspar Chemlin, 1624-1625. First edition of Kepler's logarithmic tables, the basis of his monumental Rudolphine Tables, constructed by means of his own original method. Of the greatest rarity, especially complete with the correction leaf and the second part, which gives examples of the application of logarithms and details of their construction. Only one other copy of this work has appeared at auction in the past fifty years. Provenance: The Earls of Macclesfield, Shirburn Castle, with engraved bookplate, shelf-mark on front pastedown, and blind-stamped Macclesfield crest on blank margins of first three leaves. It was through the use of these tables that Kepler was able to complete his monumental Tabulae Rudolphinae (1627), the superiority of which "constituted a strong endorsement of the Copernican system, and insured the tables' dominance in the field of astronomy throughout the seventeenth century" (Norman). But logarithms played an even more important role in Kepler's astronomical work, since without them he may never have discovered his third law of planetary motion. Kepler discovered this law early in 1618, at the same time that he first had access to tables of logarithms (see below). Moreover, his initial formulation of the third law was (to use modern terminology) in terms of a log-log plot, rather than the more familiar terms of squared periods and cubed distances: "The proportion between the periodic times of any two planets is precisely one and a half times the proportion of the mean distances" (Werke VI, 302). "In a sense, logarithms played a role in Ke … [Click Below for Full Description]

RARE. George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628). Writen in the month before the death of his king and master, James I. Buckingham had, since June 1624, been hand-in-glove with d'Effiat negotiating or the marriage of Prince Charles to the Louis XIII's sister Henrietta Maria. However that month Louis replaced his chief minister with Cardinal Richlieu, who immediately insisted that no marriage could be contemplated without relaxation of the persecution of English Catholics. Unfortunately Buckingham had given an undertaking to the House of Lords that if a French marriage were to come about, this would never be done. He did however persuade James to give a private undertaking to tis effect that would not be included in the treaty: 'In the French negotiations, as with those he had earlier conducted between the king and parliament, Buckingham was working on the assumption that the essential first step was to get the parties committed. Half-truths and ambiguities were part of the price that had to be paid to bring this about, but the pressure of events—or so he hoped—would make these irrelevant by forcing the constituent parts of the anti-Habsburg alliance into ever closer co-operation. … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIL POLO (Gaspar).
Hanoviae, Typis Wechelianis, 1625. - in-8. Cf. Manfred Tietz, "El Barroco aleman y la literatura espanola" in: Barroco (Verbum, 2013).
