ELMACINUS, G. (al-MAKIN GARGAS IBN al-'AMID).
Leiden, J. Maire & Elzevier. Kl.-4to. 4 Bl., 372 (recte 364); 75 S. Pergament d. Zeit (berieben u. verstaubt). [Click Below for Full Description]

It escaped physical damage and in 1646 was surrendered with all its arms, ordnance, and ammunition intact, to become the headquarters of a parliamentary garrison under a new military governor. During the Interregnum it remained a supply base for parliamentary troops in Ireland, and the location of monthly courts held by the county sheriff in the shire hall. In 1659 it was put into a state of defence during the rising of Sir George Booth, and shots were exchanged with the royalists who had entered the city. The Cromwellian governor, Robert Venables, was removed in 1660. Thereafter there seems to have been no garrison until 1662, when Sir Theophilus Gilbey was granted a warrant to enlist, arm, and keep under array about 60 foot soldiers. The castle, whose strategic importance on the route to north Wales and Ireland continued to be recognised, was then felt to be in need of defence against s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mary obtained a priesthood more eminent and excelling than that possessed by anyone else. For in unison with priests who are performing the sacred mysteries and together with Christ and in the same mystical way as he does, she always offers the Eucharistic sacrifice, just as, at one with him, she offered the sacrifice on Calvary". London: Isaac Jaggard, 1625; 1620. First complete English edition (second edition of the first volume, first edition of the second volume). Vol. I woodcut title border [McKerrow & Ferguson 212], vol. II border of six woodcuts, repeated throughout text. Collation: A^6(-A1, blank) B-V^6 2A^8 2B-2N^6(-N6, blank); π^4(-π1, blank) ¶-2¶^4 3¶^2 B-2Z^4 3A^6. 4to. The Stationer's Register records a 1587 translation by John Wolfe, but no copies survive. Boccaccio's masterpiece was influential on the authors of Elizabethan England -- at least fifty-four English plays, including several works by Shakespeare, have plots derived from the Decameron. The two volumes were first issued in 1620, both under the title The Decameron. When the first volume was reprinted in 1625, "No complementary edition of the second volume was published. Possibly because, when the present was called for, Jaggard was still able to supply copies of the first edition" (Pforzheimer). ACCOLTI, Pietro
Florence, Pietro Cecconcelli, Alle Stelle Medicee, 1625. Folio (290 x 206 mm.), [6] leaves, 152 pages, [2] leaves, title page with the engraved arms of the dedicatee, cardinal Carlo de'Medici, numerous diagrams and figures in the text. A pale waterstain in the upper white margin, lightly browned, cover material with few defects, but a very genuine copy in contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title on spine. First and only edition, rare. Pietro Accolti (Pisa 1579-1642) was a painter, mathematician and architect member of a noble family from Arezzo.?The treatise is divided into three parts-plane figures, solids, and shading--which is distinguished for showing how perspective practice derives from principles of visual perception. In this erudite work, he critiqued classical and modern theories of vision (including those by Witelo, Euclid, Aguilonius, Guidobaldo del Monte), and criticized modern writers on perspective for underestimating the importance of light and shadow. He emphasized the need to distinguish parallel solar rays from diverging point sources of light such as candlelight. He presented some original ideas on arranging compositions with multiple vanishing points, and on foreshortening pictures within pictures. He reproduced a perfected version of Dürer's perspective window with a frame, hinged shutter and strings. Chapters on anamorphosis and quadratura ceiling painting are typical of 17th-century interests. Also noteworthy is his flexible attitude towards perspective rules, which he cited only to "open the eyes and minds" of students without intending to set rest … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRIGGS, Henry
[London,: William Stanley for Henrie Featherstone, 1625-1626]. DescriptionDouble-page engraved map. NotesThis map was published in Samuel Purchass Purchas his Pilgrimes, 1625, in Book IV to illustrate English Northerne Navigations, and Discoveries, Relations of Greeneland, Groenland, The North-West Passage, and other Arctike Regions, with later Russian Occurrents, and is best known for being the progenitor of the myth of California as an island. Since it may have been published as early as 1622, it is also proposed as the first map to name Hudsons bay, Fretum Hudson, Hudsons R, Cape Cod, and De la war bay (Burden).Purchas his Pilgrimes was a great geographical collection and a continuation and enlargement of Hakluyts The Principal Navigations. When Hakluyt died he left a large collection of voyages in manuscript which came into the hands of Purchas, who added to them many more voyages and travels. As an editor and compiler, Purchas sought to interest the general public of his day in the dramatic geographical discoveries that had taken place with remarkable rapidity over the previous 140 years. During a time when travel literature had the patriotic purpose of inspiring Englishmen to engage in overseas expansion and enterprise, his collections were read with enthusiasm. Henry Briggs (1561-1630) was a noted scholar and mathematician of the time. His map, engraved by Reynold Elstracke, is desirable today as the first map to show California as an island, a geographic misconception that endured for centuries and has inspired numerous books and generations of map collectors. This work, his magnum opus, is a comprehensive catalogue of the titles of works which had, until the year 1624, appeared for sale at Frankfurt book fairs. A useful work, particularly as relates to early printed German texts, it updates Draud's earlier work of 1611 and arranges it more structurally and completely. CONDITION In 19th century marbled paper covered boards. Externally, sound with bumping and rubbing. Front joint split with backstrip lifting. Front hinge strained. Rear joint tender with board loosening. Rear board has been bent and damage is evident to pastedown. Loss to corner of front free-endpaper. Internally, firmly bound aside from straining after preface. Pages browned with scattered foxing. Manuscript notes to a handful of pages, including signature to title page. Overall Condition: Good Only.

JOHN MINSHEU
London: printed by John Haviland, 1625. Second edition, second issue (STC 17945.5); folio, [4] & 760 columns; last leaf with bottom margin restored (no loss of any text), mild waterstain pervades the bottom gutter and margin throughout, with occasional deterioration of the paper; other modest stains throughout, mostly in the gutter; early 19th century quarter calf, brown morocco label; spine ends chipped, spine worn; a good copy. A famous polyglot dictionary, noted for its emphasis on etymology. "Quite apart from word-lore," writes Ernest Weekley, "Minsheu's work contains vast and various information for every kind of archaeologist, and I can think of few better single volumes for an intelligent Robinson Crusoe." Although this second edition omits two languages contained in the first edition of 1617 (Welsh and Portuguese), it is "preferred by some for its additions and corrections" (see Lowndes, 1569). The book is also a typographic wonder. The liberal use of fonts and design mark the beginning of the conscious design of the lexicon, as such. Kennedy 2718; Alston II, 107; Zaunmuller, p. 304; Graesse IV, p. 533; Vancil, p. 165.
