FRENICLE (Nicolas).
Paris, Toussainct du Bray, 1625. In-8, 8 feuillets, 160 pages.

He played an important role at the court of Philip IV as spiritual advisor and court preacher. "Ferdinand Chirino de Salazar SJ (1575-1646) echoed century after century of tradition when he wrote: "Christ, 'the anointed', poured out the abundance of his anointing on Mary, making her a saint, a queen and a priest forever. Mary obtained a priesthood more eminent and excelling than that possessed by anyone else. For in unison with priests who are performing the sacred mysteries and together with Christ and in the same mystical way as he does, she always offers the Eucharistic sacrifice, just as, at one with him, she offered the sacrifice on Calvary". Tradition focussed on Mary as a sacrificial priest, a belief that had started in the early Church." LESSIO, Leonardo [Leonardus Lessius] (1554-1623).
Venice: Andraeam Baba, 1625. Venice:: Andraeam Baba, 1625., 1625. Folio. [64], 611, [17], 240, 57, [1] pp. Title vignette, printed in red and black. Original full vellum, title written on lower edge; some worming to upper cover. Bookplate of Piana. Very good. Second edition. Lessius' most important work, a commentary on the Secunda secundae of Aquinas' Summa Theologica. One of the first moral and theological appraisals of the burgeoning mercantile economy of the early 17th century. Lessius traveled to Antwerp to study the expansion of the banking industry, and he attempted to find ways to ethically resolve issues that arose in new markets like insurance. / "The great work of Lessius is De justitia et jure, which was published in 1605 and was dedicated to the Archduke Albert. Many editions followed at Antwerp, Louvain, Lyons, Paris, and Venice. This work, composed with great accuracy, shows best the soundness of judgment, the common sense, and the clearness of mind which distinguishes Lessius. The chapters on interest and other commercial subjects are epoch-making in the treatment of those difficult questions; Lessius was especially consulted by the merchants of Antwerp on matters of justice. Archduke Albert had the book constantly on his desk and referred to it as a guide." – The Catholic Encyclopedia.

Archduke Albert had the book constantly on his desk and referred to it as a guide." - The Catholic Encyclopedia.

Erpenius, Thomas / Elmacinus, G
Leiden, Johannes Maire & Elzevier, 1625. (8), 372, 75, (1) SS. Mit Holzschnittvignette am Titel. Pergamentband der Zeit auf 4 durchzogenen Bünden. 4to. "The translation of the second part of the 'Tarih al-muslimin', an Arabic chronicle written by the Copt Georgios Al-Makin in the thirteenth century. The first part was already missing from the manuscript which Erpenius used. The text and translation were published by Golius, who had to edit the last two chapters, where Erpenius had broken off. There are three editions: a folio edition containing text and translation; this quarto edition of the translation only, and a small-octavo edition of the text only. The manuscript used for this edition was lent to Erpenius by the Palatine Library, a fact which he acknowledges in the dedication to King Frederick of Bohemia [...] Next to the title and the dedication, the preliminaries contain a short anonymous note introducting the work to the reader (no date, no mention of an Arabic text), and a list of the Khalifs mentioned in the translation" (Smitskamp). - Titel etwas gebräunt; kleine, alt hinterlegte Papierdefekte in der Kalifenliste, sonst wohlerhalte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Theodorus (Jakob)
durch N. Hoffman in verlegung J. Dreutels, 1625. 3 parts (or volumes) bound in 2 vol. (the second and third in 1 vol), first title printed in red and black, and all 3 within an elaborate woodcut border, illustrated with some 2500 woodcuts in the text, first title cut down to edge of engraved surface and laid own, inscription erased with some loss of surface and a small piece of the engraving, second title just trimmed at fore-edge and an ownership inscription bleached out, third title trimmed a trifle more, somewhat browned as usual, some water-staining, other various but not alarming blemishes including offsetting from the woodcuts in vol. iii, pp. [xii], 642, [56]: [viii], 598, [2, blank]; 202, [48], folio, uniform contemporary blind-stamped pigskin, later lettering pieces on spine, 1 clasp and catch intact, 3 clasps lacking but tabs present, a little soiled but handsome, printed label inside front cover of the Hartland Collection and the stamp of the Gloucester County Library. The last Bauhin edition of this classic herbal (first published in 1588), the first to contain the final third part. Such browning as is evident in this copy is endemic to German books of the first haf of the 17th century: the woodcuts can still be appreciated, and the text is legible. Theodorus (vulg. Dietrich) is commemorated in the pan-tropical genus of flowering shrubs and small trees Tabernaemontana. The Hartland Collection was sold off by Gloucester County Council in the early years of the 21st century, without however any marks of de-accession. Naperi'.First edition of 'the largest table of original Napierian logarithms that were produced. While Napier calculated his to every minute of the arc, Ursinus's tables were to each ten seconds of arc and were eight deicmal places while Napier's were seven' (Tomash and Williams).'Benjamin Ursinus (the Latin form of Behr, his family name) was a mathematics teacher in Berlin. His earlier publication of a small Napierian logarithm table in his Cursus mathematici practici had aroused Kepler's interest and eventually resulted in the Rudolphine Tables. Ursinus, who was a friend of Kepler, assisted with the calculations for the Rudolphine Tables. Napier's logarithms were not the same as those called Napierian today (which are to base e) . Tables to the base 10 (by Briggs, Gunter and Vlacq) quickly displaced Napier's logs .'The book deals with how logarithms were calculated and their use in both plane and spherical trigonometry. The tables, which have a separate title page, are dated a year earlier than the text but were never issued independently (ibid.).The title of the second part bears a long quote (eight lines) from Kepler's Harmonices mundi (book IV, p 168).Provenance: Erwin Tomash, with his ex libris on front pastedownTomash and Williams U6 and U7; OCLC records Clark, Michigan, US Naval Observatory, Stanford, and McMaster for North … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leiden, J. Maire & Elzevier. Kl.-4to. 4 Bl., 372 (recte 364); 75 S. Pergament d. Zeit (berieben u. verstaubt). [Click Below for Full Description]

It escaped physical damage and in 1646 was surrendered with all its arms, ordnance, and ammunition intact, to become the headquarters of a parliamentary garrison under a new military governor. During the Interregnum it remained a supply base for parliamentary troops in Ireland, and the location of monthly courts held by the county sheriff in the shire hall. In 1659 it was put into a state of defence during the rising of Sir George Booth, and shots were exchanged with the royalists who had entered the city. The Cromwellian governor, Robert Venables, was removed in 1660. Thereafter there seems to have been no garrison until 1662, when Sir Theophilus Gilbey was granted a warrant to enlist, arm, and keep under array about 60 foot soldiers. TASSO Torquato.
[Attributes: Hard Cover]
