Camden, William:
Lug. Batavorum [Leiden], Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1625. Book. 4to. First Elzevir edition, and the first edition overall of the second part. pp. [xvi], xvi, 855, [xli]. With engraved title page but lacking the portrait of Elizabeth I by Crispin van Queboren. An engraved potrait of similar vintage (measuring 12.5 x 7.5 cms) has been mounted and bound in facing the title. It’s clearly derived from van Queboren’s plate, although reversed, and may well be from the 1639 8vo Elzevir edition (Willems 475). Latin text, occasional marginalia. Eighteenth century red morocco, slightly rubbed. Book-label of T. Fentiman & Sons, booksellers in Leeds, on front pastedown. Camden is justly famous for his Britannia, first published in 1586. The Annales, covering the reign of Elizabeth I, were written at the instigation of Lord Burghley, who granted Camden extraordinary access to his personal and state papers. The first part appeared in 1615 but the second part of the work was printed posthumously here. Willems: 227.

Dahlberg, Erik
. . Near contemporary full calf. Spine gilt in compartments. Lettering-pieces. 3 engraved title-pages, 351 engraved plates (117 + 108 + 126), some folding. A very fine copy. Dahlberg (1625-1703) enjoyed a distinguished military career and oversaw Charles X `s extensive fortification programme. Suecia antiqua et hodierna is in the same vein as Merian`s Topographia Gallia, and Dahlberg travelled throughout Sweden to capture the principal towns, buildings, and monuments.

[Dutch-Portuguese War]:
Madrid: Bernardino de Guzman, 1625.. Madrid: Bernardino de Guzman, 1625.. [4]pp. In Spanish. Decorative woodcut initial on first page. Small folio. Dbd. Light contemporary annotations in margins of each page. Early folds. Loss, repaired in silk, to gutter and outer margins and along one fold, affecting a few characters of text on p.[4]. Overall very good. Rare Spanish newsletter reporting on recent victories by the Portuguese against the Dutch, the Persians, and others throughout Asia in 1624. The early 17th century saw the Dutch begin to present a serious threat to Portuguese power and commerce in the East, and by the mid-1620s the Portuguese were beleaguered by constant attacks by the Dutch navy and its various Asian allies. The present Spanish newsletter celebrates one of the last great series of Dutch defeats by the Portuguese, who are lauded here by their Iberian partners as worldwide defenders of the Catholic faith holding their ground against overwhelming odds. Within a few years the Dutch would clearly gain the upper hand in Asia, both militarily and commercially, and by 1663 would control much of the Malabar Coast, Ceylon, Indonesia, Malacca, and European trade with Japan, leaving Portugal only with bases at Macao, East Timor, and Portuguese India. The newsletter discusses several naval battles off the coast of Persia, down the Malabar Coast to Ceylon, to Malacca, China, and Macao. A significant portion of the pamphlet describes the heavy Portuguese losses sustained by repeated attacks on Macao by the Dutch, who by this time had established a base in the Pescador … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roma, Jacobi Mascardi, 1625. Folio. (35x24 cm.). Bound uncut in a fine modern hvellum with calligraphed title on back. Engraved title. (12),100,(8) pp., 22 full-page engravings, textillustrations in woodcut. A small hole to title repaired, light scattered brownspots, 3 leaves at end a little foxed. Otherwise fine. ¶ First edition. The work describes and depicts the rare plants found in the Gardens of the Farnese family in Rome, scarce and exotic plants the seeds of which were brought to Rome by members of the Jesuit Order travelling abroad, and showing species not previous seen in Europe. Aldini was curator for the Gardens, but the work has rightly been attributed to Pietro Castelli, professor of botany in Rome and founder of the Botanical Gardens at Messina. Paris. Chex Andre Pralard. 1625., 1625. 12mo. 17cm, in 2 volumes, xxx,461,[ix] & 56,496,[v]pp., in 6 books, in contemporary full calf, raised bands, gilt decorations in the panels, rubbed and worn but a very good sound set. (n14). - Malebranche, Nicolas, 1638-1715. His major work, begun in 1668, was De La Recherche de la Verite. It ran to several volumes and was revised constantly. Like Descartes, Malebranche rejected sensible qualities and held that things are to be judged solely by the ideas that represent them to us according to their intelligible essence. God was seen as the sole efficient casue and natural causes as only "occasional" causes - hence occaisionalism, as Malebranche's system is called.

Franckfurt am Main, Johann Ammon, 1625. Small folio. Very nice recent hvellum in old style. Gilt title-label on back. Folded engraved title-page with 2 views (one showing Statt Amberg) and 4 illustrations. (6), 113,(5) pp. With all 33 engravings in the text (11 nearly full-page, 22 half-page, and numb. 1-33 in the plate). The last 4 pp. deal with "Bericht der Wagenburg" and should have 4 plates, these are not present as they are not present in some of the other recorded copies. Some browning to a few quires, but in general good.. Scarce first edition on this important work on the manufacturing of bombs, canons and fireworks (wheels and mines). The book describes and depicts (in fine engravings) how these many sorts of weapons are constructed and how gunpowder is produced and used. The real author is probably Franz Helm and not Ammon. Ammon had written a work called "Buch von den probirten Künsten", the manuscript of which was widely circulated, and which was finally printed in 1536. Ammon seems to have used this popular work as a basis for his own, in his own shortened and edited form. Cockle No. 690 (gives no author and no collation) - Graesse I:222 (also without the 4 plates) - Jähns p. 995. - Rumpf No. 1106. - Chris Philip p. 12. A second edition was published in 1669 under the title "Laboratorium Militare"

1625. Strassburg, Rihel, 1625. Small 8vo (160 x 950mm). pp. (38). Modern speckled brown boards. One of the earliest works descibing the discovery of oil. Johann Volck was a student of Leonard Thurneisser who was one of the first followers of Paracelsus. Little is known about Volck apart from the fact that he had a distilling plant at Lampertloch. The English translation of the German title is as follows: Description of the Hanau earth balsam, petroleum and soft agate stone, which are found in the village named Lampertloch, belonging to the most nobly born count Johan Reinhard, Count of Hanau and Zweibrücken etc., etc., together with its qualities, power and efficacy, which various authors ascribe to it.... The work describes the petroleum basins of the Alsace of which the town Hagenau is of major importance. "The interesting aspects of his pamphlet, however, resides in the fact that in the last four pages he expatiates upon technical uses of petroleum which... were not generally accepted until very much later... Comparing Volck's statement with those of a famous technologist such as Agricola... Volck's pamphlet stands out by virtue of acumen of its auhtor, who obviously personally looked for the possible practical uses of crude oil and the distillate therefrom in directions which had not occured to his contemporaries" (Forbes, Studies in early petroleum history pp. 74-75). A very rare item. The Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog only mentions six copies in German libraries..
