CERVANTES, Miguel de
Brusselas: por Huberto Antonio, 1625. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (168 x 103 mm). [16], 608 pp. Woodcut initials in text. Contemporary calf, spine with 4 raised bands, titled and richly gilt in compartments, boards with single gilt ruling (slight wear to extremities), red-sprinkled edges, endpapers browned at outer margins by binder's glue. Light even browning of text, very little occasional spotting, torn lower blank corner in leaf B4, well away from text. Provenance: old illegible stamp on title-page. A fine, quite fresh, clean and untouched copy. ---- Palau 53412; Peeters-Fontainas 241; Simon Diaz 8, 561; USTC 5038771. The second Brussels edition of Cervantes' Novelas, originally published in Madrid in 1613. Very rare with only four copies recorded at auction in the past 50 years. Novelas exemplares ("Exemplary Novels") is a series of twelve novellas written by Miguel de Cervantes between 1590 and 1612. First published in Madrid in 1613 by Juan de la Cuesta, the novellas were well received in the wake of the first part of Don Quixote. They are usually grouped into two series: those characterized by an idealized nature and those of more realistic nature. Those idealized in nature are characterized by plots dealing with amorous entanglements, by improbable plots, by the presence of idealized characters and psychological development, and the low reflection of reality. The novellas show the political, social and historical problems of Cervantes' Spain and show off his immersion in Spain's life and how aware he was of the prevailing problems. [Mexico; Manila; Japan] San Francisco, Diego de (O.F.M.).
1625 [i.e.1626]. Manila [i.e. México]. Colegio de S. Thomas de Aquino, por Thomas Pimpin. 8vo (188 x 126 mm). 4 ff. (title page with woodcut arms of the Franciscans), 64 ff. (of 70ff., full details below). Fine dark blue morocco gilt signed Brugalla, 1956, in excellent condition. Excellent copy, light toning overall.- An absolute bibliographical rarity, acontrefaconprinted in Mexico, but giving it as a Manila impression by Pimpin; this is the “third” edition, following a complicated printing history between Manila and Mexico -see below. An extremely rare book. García identifies 3editions between 1625-1626 as follows: First Edition: Manila, 1625 issued after the first 88 pages of the edition below were sent to Mexico.: See Retana Orígenes Nº 30. 4ll. 136pp. Second Edition:(hybrid edition Manila and México 1625-1626). First 88 pages completed by Thomas Pimpin in Manila at the Dominican printing press, sent by ship to Mexico andcompleted there in 1626 as shown in title page on p.89.4 unnumbered leaves + 158pp. Third Edition: entirely reprinted in Mexico in 1626 but with a false place of publication (Manila) shown by its title page which is reproduced by Retana. This is the one with 4 ff. and text up to f.57, followed by Actos and Actae. 4 ff. unnumbered + 70f f. Our copy corresponds to this edition although it lacks the Actae in Latin. Bibliographers are not agreed as to whether the first edition is the complete Manila edition of 1625 or the hybrid Manila-Mexico of 1625-1626 (see summary of debate by García). García concludes that accord … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venice, Evanelista Deuchino, 1625, title with woodcut device, dedication dated 1624. Pp [iv], 418, [ xxvi table of contents not numbered]. Some rather erratic pagination, but catchwords follow as they should. With 88 text engravings after Bolognino Zaltieri. There is a manuscript note fixed to verso of front pastedown with further owner inscription of J. H. Barrow dated 1822 at front, and with his bookplate . A full vellum binding with worn title label to the spine, small 4to. Some toning to pages, ffep lacks one corner, some thumbing, plates generally well struck. Complete. A strange work with memorable emblematic imagery, and a pleasing copy. First published in Venice in 1556 as Le Imagini con la Spositione de i Dei de gli Antichi, with the first illustrated edition in 1571. The woodcuts are based on those of Bolognino Zalteri as printed in the Venice 1571 edition. The work is recognised as being a source book for Renaissance artists and was popular in its time, with Zaltieri's lively and strange illustrations of the supposed iconography of the Gods. Cartari. was born in Reggio Emilia around 1531 and died around 1571and was probably in the court of the dukes of Ferrara.

[Shipwreck] [Almada, Francisco Vaz de].
1625 [eighteenth-century counterfiet edtion, ca. 1735]. Lisbon. Pedro Craesbeeck [i.e. António Pedroso Galrão?]. 4to, (190 x 140 mm). 2 ff., 5-95 pp. Recent antique half calf over marbled boards. Manuscript foliation, "17-64" in upper outer corner of the recto of each leaf; text block edges rouged, scattered small foxing spots, else a fine copy.- Second [?] edition; a counterfeit of the 1625 Craesbeeck edition -also included in Gomes de Brito'sHistoria tragico-maritima. TheSao Joao Baptistasailed from Goa on March 1, 1622. In July, after its companion ship disappeared near the Cape of Good Hope, two Dutch ships attacked the Sao Joao.Following a vicious 19-day battle she finally escaped, rudderless and battered, and drifted northward until the sailors managed to beach her at about 33° South. In early November the 279 survivors decided to attempt to reach Mozambique on foot. Vaz de Almada describes their battles with the Kaffirs, their desperate struggles to find food, and the fate of those who became too weak to keep up with the group. The captain attempted to maintain his authority by arbitrary beheading and hanging; in at least one case, the survivors ate the bodies of those executed. Vaz de Almada, elected leader after the captain's death near Lourenço Marques, showed considerable prudence but could not avoid the attack of over a thousand Kaffirs, who took what possessions the shipwreck victims still had and left them to stagger naked into Ponta da Barra (about 24° South). There a Portuguese ship from Sofala finally collected 32 survivors in August 1623. Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Claes Jansz VISSCHER (1587 - 1652)
Jacques CALLOT (Nancy 1592 - 1635)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1625, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Thesis: the triumph of the Virgin; allegorical figures holding inscribed shields in the lesser part, surrounding an armed woman trampling a dragon; in the centre, the Virgin on a carriage, wearing a triple crown, holding a lily and a sphere, surrounded by figures playing music, with groups of the damned on each side; fortified cities and ships in the background; cherubs, allegorical figures, inscribed banderoles and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ottavio LEONI detto "Il Padovanino" (Roma 1578 circa - 1630)
"Etching and engraving, 1625, signed and dated on plate in the example of the second state. A magnificent impression of the rare first state of two, before the letters, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, in excellent condition. Famous for his portraits of all the Roman aristocracy in the early seventeenth century, Ottavio Leoni, R … [Click Below for Full Description]

Claes Jansz VISSCHER (1587 - 1652)
Dimensioni 545x460. Around 1625 Visscher published a new prototype of map with a decorative border which has been then copied by Janssonius ans Jodocus Hondius jr. The map is signed on plate by Nicolas Iohannis Visscher, while the engraver Abraham Goos signed it on lower left. The border is d … [Click Below for Full Description]

An early edition of this work, and an unusual imprint. Most early editions of this work on the market are in Latin, whereas this work is in Italian. This is not the first Italian translation, which appeared in 1602, however surviving Italian language translations from this period appear to be of a higher scarcity. Valeriano took inspiration from the culturally important and contemporaneous rediscovery of Horapollo's Hieroglyphics. His tutor, Giorgio Valla produced writings on Horapollo and some consider this work to be a sort of continuation. This work formed the most concise Renaissance dictionary of symbols, which was an area of study that was gathering much interest during that period. Each entry to this work is dedicated to noted Renaissance figures who assisted or inspired Valeriano in his writings. Valeriano mostly discusses natural history through the em … [Click Below for Full Description]
