ILLUMINIERTE URKUNDE MIT DEN WAPPEN VON PAPST URBAN VIII. & ALESSANDRO ORSINI, KADINAL DER RÖMISCHEN KIRCHE - ANNO 1625 __________________________________________________________________________________ TITEL Genehmigung zur Abhaltung besonderer Gedächtnismessen. Lateinische Urkunde auf Pergament. VERFASSER Urban VIII. __________________________________________ … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

printed by John Haviland, 1625. Second edition, second issue (STC 17945.5); folio, [4] & 760 columns; last leaf with bottom margin restored (no loss of any text), mild waterstain pervades the bottom gutter and margin throughout, with occasional deterioration of the paper; other modest stains throughout, mostly in the gutter; early 19th century quarter calf, brown morocco label; spine ends chipped, spine worn; a good copy. A famous polyglot dictionary, noted for its emphasis on etymology. "Quite apart from word-lore," writes Ernest Weekley, "Minsheu's work contains vast and various information for every kind of archaeologist, and I can think of few better single volumes for an intelligent Robinson Crusoe." Although this second edition omits two languages contained in the first edition of 1617 (Welsh and Portuguese), it is "preferred by some for its additions and corrections" (see Lowndes, 1569). The book is also a typographic wonder. The liberal use of fonts and design mark the beginning of the conscious design of the lexicon, as such. Mary obtained a priesthood more eminent and excelling than that possessed by anyone else. For in unison with priests who are performing the sacred mysteries and together with Christ and in the same mystical way as he does, she always offers the Eucharistic sacrifice, just as, at one with him, she offered the sacrifice on Calvary". Venice: Andraeam Baba, 1625. Venice:: Andraeam Baba, 1625., 1625. Folio. [64], 611, [17], 240, 57, [1] pp. Title vignette, printed in red and black. Original full vellum, title written on lower edge; some worming to upper cover. Bookplate of Piana. Very good. Second edition. Lessius' most important work, a commentary on the Secunda secundae of Aquinas' Summa Theologica. One of the first moral and theological appraisals of the burgeoning mercantile economy of the early 17th century. Lessius traveled to Antwerp to study the expansion of the banking industry, and he attempted to find ways to ethically resolve issues that arose in new markets like insurance. / "The great work of Lessius is De justitia et jure, which was published in 1605 and was dedicated to the Archduke Albert. Many editions followed at Antwerp, Louvain, Lyons, Paris, and Venice. This work, composed with great accuracy, shows best the soundness of judgment, the common sense, and the clearness of mind which distinguishes Lessius. The chapters on interest and other commercial subjects are epoch-making in the treatment of those difficult questions; Lessius was especially consulted by the merchants of Antwerp on matters of justice. Archduke Albert had the book constantly on his desk and referred to it as a guide." – The Catholic Encyclopedia.

ZUCCOLO, Lodovico (1568-1630)
In Venetia, appresso Marco Ginammi 1625. . 4to. [XL],278,[2 blank]p., lvs a3 and a4 bound between b4 and c1. With woodcut priner's device on title and numerous woodcut initials. Contemp. carta rustica. Uncut with ample margins, upper margin unopened, vague water stain in blank outer margin throughout, small loss in lower margin of b4, far from printed text. Second much augmented edition. A first edition of 1615 was a small volume containing seven dialogues only. The present edition is the first to include the important commentary on Thomas More's Utopia', as well as Zuccolo's own utopia': Il porto overo della Republica d'Evandria'. Zuccolo was read widely and achieved some fame in early modern Europe through his Aristotelian treatise on reason of state. The interpretation of Zuccolo as the author ofa couple of utopian writings is of particular interest for the study of the relationship with themainstream discourse of reason of state. In Evandria' Zuccolo combines the use of stylistic and structural elements of the utopian genre with the development of a republican theory based on civic virtue and public education.' Lateinische Urkunde auf Pergament. VERFASSER Urban VIII. In: Religionswissenschaft review, Band 24, Ausgabe 3-4, 1950. s. 266-300. [Click Below for Full Description]

Book in its binding to time format in 12, 18 sheets unencrypted containing, the epistle as the preface to the reader, 571 pages, 3 white sheets unencrypted: read the fascinating article of Maurice Nédoncelle, we quote below. A turbulent Monk: J. Barnes, forerunner of the provincials and unfortunate ecumenist. In: Religious studies review, volume 24, issue 3-4, 1950. pp. 266-300. "With a haughty moralism and a fearless candour which can only tribute he repeats probably the proverb that Cervantes bequeathed to the English: honesty is the best policy." The author therefore turns on the Casuistry of the Jesuits. "II must fight this scum," exclaims unceremoniously, as soon as his preface. It aims especially Lessius of Leuven, discussed, and powerful theologian against which others that he had vainly carried out the attack and that the Pope Urbain wine admired. To listen Lessius, he thinks, nothing is easier to lie without offending God: just speak ambiguously and is perfectly legitimate if serious interest advises. Lessius he associated two other fathers of the company, Spain's Valencia and mostly English Parsons, remarkable and exciting missionary who had written both on the ambiguity and the religious issue in England. In addition, Parsons looked the Benedictines as opponents of his order and "did not hesitate to give them the assault in terms devoid of any measure" "." Hanoviae, Typis Wechelianis, 1625. in-8. Cf. Manfred Tietz, "El Barroco aleman y la literatura espanola" in: Barroco (Verbum, 2013).
