JOACHIM DE FLORE [GIOACCHINO DA FIORE]
1625 - [2]-104-[1] pages In Padova, Pietro Paolo Tozzi, 1625, in-4, [2]-104-[1] pages, vélin ivoire postérieur, Signatures : [n.s.]2 ; A-N4. [Click Below for Full Description]

PLATTER, Felix and Thomas
Ludovici Regis, Basel. FIRST EDITION OF THIS ESSAY ON ANATOMY FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. [xvi] 277 [xi]. Roman and italic letter, printer device on t-p, historiated and floriated initials, ornamental tail pieces, age foxing. A very good copy in a beautiful contemp rigid vellum over board, flat spine gilt with four compartments, double gilt-tooled frames with corner fleurons and central oval ornamental piece, gilt edges, ms. author's name and date on spine, remains of silk green ties. First edition of this essay on anatomy, particularly blood circulation with a useful index at end. Felix Platter's work is a gathering of medical questions divided under five subjects headings: "Physiologicae", "Pathologicae", "Simeioticae", "Hygieinae", and "Therapeuticae". The first (and longest) section answers a wide variety of questions about the human body, from birth (including removal of the umbilical chord) to death (including why corpses sometimes take on a yellowish color) with many tips in between, even a short discussion of 'why the fingers are pale' and suggesting exposure to sunlight, but warning against sunburn. The final four sections deal more with sickness, symptoms, hygiene including diet, and nutrition as well as women's health, and finally a small collection of cures including the use of precious stones to draw illnesses from the blood. With such a wide variety of topics in a question-and-answer format, the book was probably intended for use as a household reference guide for the contemporary ailing humanist. Felix Platter ( 1536-1614) was the son of Thomas Platter, a well-kn … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Alexander (1567-1640) London, 1625. Copper-engraved map (with a strong, dark engraving impression and full margins, some light toning to centerfold, overall a very fine example), sheet: 37,5 x 31,5 cm, image: 34 x 25 cm.
- The 2nd (of 2) states, from Samuel Purchas, Purchase his Pilgrimes (London: William Stansby, 1625). A fine example of William Alexander’s’ ‘New Scotlande’, the first broadly accurate English map of Northeast North America. This highly important map is the first broadly accurate English map to focus on both New England and Atlantic Canada. It was devised by the Scottish colonial proprietor William Alexander in order to promote migration and investment in his New World domains. The map is one of the most important original graphic artifacts pertaining to the early period of English colonization in the North America. The map embraces the all of the area of the continent roughly from the east of the present day location of Montreal and from eastern Massachusetts in the south, northward to Labrador. While far from scientific, Alexander’s map is amazingly accurate for the time, with all key features taking on a form familiar to the modern viewer. The St. Lawrence Valley (modern Quebec), the Gulf of St. Lawrence (labeled here as the ‘Golfe of Canada’) and the outlines of the Canadian Maritimes are generally taken from Samuel de Champlain’s groundbreaking Carte geographique de la Nouvelle France (1612), while the depiction of Newfoundland is improved, based on recent English sources, including John Mason. The depiction of New England is largely taken from English sources, such as John Smith, and is a dramatic improvement over Champlain’s coverage of the region. Important geographical features are clearly defined, including Nantucket, M … [Click Below for Full Description]

Book 12mo. 17cm, in 2 volumes, xxx,461,[ix] & 56,496,[v]pp., in 6 books, in contemporary full calf, raised bands, gilt decorations in the panels, rubbed and worn but a very good sound set. (n14). - Malebranche, Nicolas, 1638-1715. His major work, begun in 1668, was De La Recherche de la Verite. It ran to several volumes and was revised constantly. Like Descartes, Malebranche rejected sensible qualities and held that things are to be judged solely by the ideas that represent them to us according to their intelligible essence. God was seen as the sole efficient casue and natural causes as only "occasional" causes - hence occaisionalism, as Malebranche's system is called. .

Purchas, Samuel
London, 1625. Folio. Late 19th-century dark blue morocco, raised bands, a.e.g., by W. Pratt, handsome gilt device on front and rear covers. Careful repairs in upper margin of titlepage in fifth volume. Map of Virginia trimmed to margin on bottom and left, with loss of margin in gutter about a quarter-inch wide, repaired in expert facsimile, and laid down on linen. Engraved titlepage expertly remargined. Otherwise fresh and clean. A very good, tall, handsome set. A beautiful set of the second great collection of English voyages, expanding upon and greatly adding to the work of Hakluyt, whose manuscripts Purchas took over after Hakluyt's death. Comprised of the first issue of the first volume (which conforms to the pagination in Sabin 66683, with the offensive text concerning the Dutch in uncanceled state), and the fourth edition (as is usual and proper) of PURCHAS HIS PILGRIMAGE as the fifth volume (second issue, with the dedication to King Charles I). The first volume contains the first state of pages 703- 706, with the offending references to the Dutch (e.g. with the headline on page 704 reading "Hollanders lying deuices, to disgrace the English" instead of "Amboyna taken by the Dutch. Ingratitude. Boasting," as in the second issue). See Sabin for a detailed description of other issue points. Purchas collects over 1,200 separate narratives of explorations in every part of the world. Many of the accounts relate to the New World, especially Virginia, and one of the engraved maps is Smith's famous "Map of Virginia" (here in what Philip Burden describes as the tenth state). [MILITARIA - CÁDIZ EXPEDITION].
CCPB 000039164-6 (5 copies); Palau 61143; WorldCat (5 copies); cf. Knuttel 3663 (Dutch ed.). First and only Spanish edition of a pamphlet giving an account of the ill-fated British attempt in November 1625 to capture the Spanish fleet laden with silver and other precious goods from the West Indies and harass Spain with an armada of 100 ships, a debacle that cost the British £250,000 and the lives of more than a thousand men without yielding any booty. The present anonymous account of the events is said to have been written in Spanish but was first published in Dutch in 1626 by Anthony Jansz. Tongerloo in The Hague.George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham, planned the mission as a glorious military triumph like the sinking of the Spanish Armada 37 years before. He sent an armada of 100 ships, but they were poorly maintained and provisioned merchant ships and were led by Sir Edward Cecil, a celebrated army commander with no naval experience. Reaching Spain too late to attempt to take the West Indian fleet, Cecil instead decided to attack Cádiz. Given the insufficient provisions, he let his landing party take wine vats from the local stores. The result was that the Spanish army slaughtered a thousand drunken soldiers who never fired a shot. The captains of the ships, more concerned with protecting their ships than with fighting, let the Spanish ships escape. It was left to the Dutch Admiral Piet Hein to successfully capture the Spanish silver fleet in the West Indies in 1628.With some tears and chips along the gutter fold, not approaching the text, but otherwise in good condi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Briggs, Henry
London. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1625. Map. The famous 1625 Briggs map of North America, showing California as an island. The map from the borders is 11 1/4" by 14". There is a vertical fold in the middle where it was bound in, with the paper binding stub on one side on the back. Map edge has a few small chips and tears at the fold edges. Paper browned with some darker spots in margins. A water mark and a plate mark are visible. The image is cropped slightly due to scanner size; more scans available upon request. This was the first widely published map to put forth a number of features, based on less well known earlier maps. The idea of California being an island influenced cartographers for the next century, basing their own maps on this and another map published around the same time by Abraham Goos. This map was designed by Henry Briggs for publication in Samuel Purchas' "Purchas His Pilgrimes," a set of four volumes of travel accounts with a volume on America. Briggs, a mathematician known for popularizing base 10 logarithms, first published a treatise on the Northwest Passage in 1622, where an earlier version of this map appeared. There is debate over whether Goos' or Briggs' map existed first, but Briggs' map is at least the first English edition to use the names of Hudson Bay, Fretum Hudson (Hudson Strait) and other eastern coastal features. The engraver, noted in the lower right corner, was Renold Elstracke, one of England's early noted engravers. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 1 pp .

Callot, Jacques (1592 Nancy 1635)
Radierung, 1625, auf Bütten. 55,7:36,1 cm. Literatur: Lieure 562, III (von III). ? V, S. 407).

Erpenius, Thomas / Elmacinus, G.
Leiden, Johannes Maire & Elzevier, 1625.. (8), 372, 75, (1) SS. Mit Holzschnittvignette am Titel. Pergamentband der Zeit auf 4 durchzogenen Bünden. 4to.. "The translation of the second part of the 'Tarih al-muslimin', an Arabic chronicle written by the Copt Georgios Al-Makin in the thirteenth century. The first part was already missing from the manuscript which Erpenius used. The text and translation were published by Golius, who had to edit the last two chapters, where Erpenius had broken off. There are three editions: a folio edition containing text and translation; this quarto edition of the translation only, and a small-octavo edition of the text only. The manuscript used for this edition was lent to Erpenius by the Palatine Library, a fact which he acknowledges in the dedication to King Frederick of Bohemia [...] Next to the title and the dedication, the preliminaries contain a short anonymous note introducting the work to the reader (no date, no mention of an Arabic text), and a list of the Khalifs mentioned in the translation" (Smitskamp). - Titel etwas gebräunt; kleine, alt hinterlegte Papierdefekte in der Kalifenliste, sonst wohlerhal … [Click Below for Full Description]

De Bry, Theodor.
Frankfurt/Oppenheim, 1591-1625. Folio. Bound in 9 uniform magnificent late 19th century full green morocco bindings with gilt centrepieces, gilt lines to edges of boards and gilt line-frames to inside of boards. All edges gilt and all volumes signed W. Pratt. A lovely set, exquisitely and uniformly bound, magnificently restored in the most gentle and respectful of manners, of the entire original run of De Bry's "Great American Voyages" (supplied by extra variant copies of volumes IV and VIII), the magnificent work that is responsible for shaping the European image of the New World, inventing it in the minds of the masses. Presenting a broad view of European conquests in America and the first contact with the American Indians, De Bry's Great American Voyages represents the first attempt to introduce in Europe - and on a large scale - a pictorial image of the New World as a whole. With it, the first iconography of the American Indian had been created, and most Europeans glimpsed for the first time the wonders of the New World in the illustrations present here. For more than a century, the European view of the New World was dominated by the present work. Theodor de Bry himself published the first six parts (in German and Latin simultaneously), and after his death, his widow and his two sons issued the three following parts. "It appears that they intended to stop there" (Sabin III, 20). However, 17 years later, Johann Theodor decided to publish another three volumes (1619-24). These are not present here. The present set is a mix of the German and Latin volumes (which appeared s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leiden, Elzevier 1625.. [Click Below for Full Description]

QUIROS, Pedro Fernandez de
London, 1625. Folio, 12 pp. extract from Purchas, printing the Quiros letter (pp. 1422-1432); very good, in appealing modern half calf, marbled boards. An ideal "introductory" copy of Quiros: this extract from the magisterial voyage anthology of Purchas (Purchas His Pilgrimes, London, 1625) is only the second printing in English of Quiros's celebrated Eighth Memorial to the King of Spain describing the wonders of Terra Australis. In English it is predated only by the 1617 London publication Terra Australis incognita, rightly considered one of the highlights of early Australian books. The Eighth Memorial of Quiros is one of the most famous of all voyage texts, and more than any other single cause was responsible for the search for a Southern Continent that only ultimately ceased with Cook's discoveries. Between 1607 and 1614 Quiros submitted about 65 memorials to Philip III and members of his councils seeking support for the further exploration and settlement of the Southern Continent. Circulation of the Spanish memorials was highly restricted and all but a few remained in manuscript. Only one - the Eighth, which appeared originally in December 1608 or January 1609 - was translated (into Dutch, English, French, German and Italian) and published separately outside Spain, becoming as a result the best known and the most influential.Quiros's conviction that the Southland was a reality was formed when he accompanied Mendaña's disastrous attempt in 1595 to revisit and colonise the Solomons. Cartari, Vincenzo
Venetia : Appresso Euangelista Deuchino Small 4to (19.5 cm; 7.75"). [14] ff., 418 pp., fold. plate; illus.. 1625 First published in 1556, Cartari's work brings together a wealth of information about Classical mythology: idols, rites, ceremonies, and practices. It was first issued with illustrations in 1571, those being by Bolognino Zaltieri, and the many in-text engravings of this edition are derived from his. Although this was not the most rigorous of studies, its engaging style, its being in Italian rather than Latin, and its illustrations have made Cartari's Imagini popular and given it a long and successful run of editions. Provenance: Pressure-stamp of private collector Colossio Solari of Cremona. Mid-19th-century quarter cloth with marbled paper sides. Some staining; some gatherings probably supplied or damaged and now tipped to stubs. Light waterstaining here and there. A less than perfect copy priced very much according to its faults and still a worthy copy for an impoverished collector or a person who just doesn't need "perfect"!
