CERVANTES, Miguel de
Huberto Antonio, 1625. In-8 (167 x 100 mm) de 8 ff.n.ch., 608 pp. ; vélin à rabats, titre à l'encre au dos (reliure ancienne). Rius, I, 233 ; Heredia, II, 2641 ; Salvá, 1747 ; Losada Goya, 189. Papier … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAUDIER, Michel.
- WorldCat (9 copies); cf. Atabey 73-74 (1625 & 1641 eds.); not in Blackmer. Second edition of "the most complete treatment of Islam up to its time in France" (Atabey). Written by Micheal Baudier (ca. 1589-1645), historiographer to the Court of France. The book is presented as a history of the religion of the Turks, who controlled, at that time, a large part of the Islamic world, and gives a detailed description of Islam and its prophet Muhammad.Bottom of title-page restored, covering a fraction of a millimetre of the date in the imprint, and a small corner torn off, another corner torn from leaf K3, just touching the text. Further some thumbing, several wormholes and a few water stains. Still a good copy of a classic description of Islam.

Erpenius, Thomas / Elmacinus, G.
1625. 4to. (8), 372, 75, (1) pp. With woodcut title vignette. Contemp. vellum. Quarto edition of Elmacinus's great chronicle, "Tarih al-muslimin" ("Kitab al-magmu` al-mu-barak"), translated by Erpenius. This "History of the Saracenes" is actually a history of Islam from the days of the Prophet up to the year 1118. Erpenius, professor at Leiden, is remembered as "one of the men whom the study of oriental languages owes its resurrection" (cf. VI, 329). "The translation of the second part of the 'Tarih al-muslimin', an Arabic chronicle written by the Copt Georgios Al-Makin in the thirteenth century. The first part was already missing from the manuscript which Erpenius used. The text and translation were published by Golius, who had to edit the last two chapters, where Erpenius had broken off. There are three editions: a folio edition containing text and translation; this quarto edition of the translation only, and a small-octavo edition of the text only. The manuscript used for this edition was lent to Erpenius by the Palatine Library, a fact which he acknowledges in the dedication to King Frederick of Bohemia [...] Next to the title and the dedication, the preliminaries contain a short anonymous note introducting the work to the reader (no date, no mention of an Arabic text), and a list of the Khalifs mentioned in the translation" (Smitskamp). - Title page insignificantly browned; slight paper defects in the list of Caliphs (with old repairs), otherwise well-preserved. Freitas, Seraphim de.
Valladolid, Hieronymus Morillo, 1625. 4to. (8), 190, (28) ff. Title printed in red and black with woodcut arms of Spain. Modern brown calf, gilt spine in five compartments with two red labels. Rare first edition. The principal printed justification of Portugal's imperial claims in the East Indies in the face of the attack posed by Hugo Grotius's "Mare liberum". Freitas's treatise is a powerful refutation of Grotius, claiming that the sovereign has the right to refuse admission of commerce or foreigners to his territory and forbid his subjects all trade and intercourse with them. - Calf somewhat worn. Some minor marginal dampstaining and foxing, with some 20 leaves quite heavily browned. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). Palau III, 275. Not in Kress or Goldsmiths'. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
