Konrad, von Scheyern Philosophus
London: Typis Gregorij Hænlin, 1623. Written by Konrad, von Scheyern Philosophus.; Georg Christian Joannis; Stephan Reitperger; Abbot of Scheyern Stephanus; Gregor Hanlin Scheyern Abbey, formerly also Scheyern Priory (Kloster Scheyern) is a house of the Benedictine Order in Scheyern in Bavaria. The monastery at Scheyern was established in 1119 as the final site of the community originally founded in around 1077 at Bayrischzell by Countess Haziga of Aragon, wife of Otto II, Count of Scheyern, the ancestors of the Wittelsbachs. The first monks were from Hirsau Abbey, of which the new monastery was a priory, founded as it was against the background of the Investiture Controversy and the Hirsau Reforms. The original site proved unsuitable for a number of reasons, including difficulties with water supply, and the monastery moved in 1087 to Fischbachau. When that site too proved unsuitable, they moved to Petersberg, in 1104. In Latin. The dedication is to the Holy Cross and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary: the abbey has had in its possession since 1180 a relic of the Holy Cross from Jerusalem, and is still today a place of pilgrimage for this reason. By the 13th century the abbey had already gained a reputation for its school of illumination and its scriptorium. Including decorative title page. With monastic bookplate to front pastedown. In a vellum binding. Externally worn, with dampstaining to the boards and slight loss in places. Backstrip lifting. Internally, firmly bound. Ink inscription and library label to front pastedown. Pages are quite bright, with some scattered ligh … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hello and thank you for looking. For your consideration is a beautiful compete set of The National Shakespeare, A Facsimile of the First Folio of 1623, Illustrated by Sir J. Noel Paton in 3 Volumes (Comedies, Tragedies, Histories), London, William MacKenzie. While there is not a copyright for this set, it has been dated to the mid-late 19th century. All 3 leather bound books have been very well maintained. The front and back covers are fully attached and intact, and the binding is tight. Please refer to the numerous pictures which illustrate the wonderful condition of all 3 books. This set came from a wonderful collection of antique books I have recently acquired. I have just begun listing some of the titles from this collection, so feel free to check in with my other listings. I have perfect feedback selling rare and valuable specialty items so please bid with confidence. Thank you. NOTE: I have listed domestic shipping at a flat rate of $25 as eBay is having some glitch that limits flat rate shipping cost of books to $25. As this listing is for 3 very large books, shipping will most likely be a bit more, but will not exceed $40 for domestic. I will send an updated invoice to the winner of this auction based on shipping cost that will not exceed $40. Thank you.

LE NORMANT, Jean
apud Oliuarum de Varennes, viâ Iacobaeâ, sub signo Victoriae, 1623. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. pp. [xx], 960 (iv) ; a¹⁰, A-3O⁸, (-)2. [last blank].Roman letter, some Italic. Woodcut floriated initials, woodcut headpieces with double H's, typographical ornaments. Light age yellowing, a little browning to a few quires, very pale waterstains in lower outer corner towards end. A very good copy in contemporary vellum over thin boards, remains of ties, lacks fly. First edition, published simultaneously at Paris by Nicolas Buon, and a French translation in two volumes, entitled 'Histoire Veritable et Memorable de ce qui c'est passé sous l'exorcisme de trois filles possedées es païs de Flandre' also published by Olivier de Varennes. The latin edition is even rarer than the French, itself very rare. Extremely interesting accounts of the diabolic possession and exorcisms of the Nuns of the Monastery of St. Brigitte in Lille in 1613, conducted by the Dominican inquisitor Sebatien Michaëlis and recounted by his disciple Le Normant. Michaelis was vice-inquisitor in Avignon during the 1580s and was involved in a number of witch trials: a series of cases in 1581 and 1582 led to eighteen women being convicted and burnt. In 1587 he published a work on demons, the 'Pneumalogie ou discours des esprits'. By 1610 he was prior of the Dominican community at Saint-Maxim near Aix-en-Provence where he was later involved in one of the most notorious witch trials, and cases of demonic possession, in the history of France, that of the priest Louis Gaufridi, who was convicted of sorcery, tortured and burnt, on … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Shakespeare
London, 1623. Original Shakespeare single leaf from FIRST FOLIO. The Life of Henry the Fift. This is an original leaf. It is NOT a reproduction, photocopy, poster or later impression. This leaf was salvaged from a woefully derelict copy of the First Folio, printed in London in 1623, and was part of a collection of leaves formed in England in the early 20th century. This leaf was compared to the same leaf in the Brandeis copy to verify accuracy of description. This leaf is leaf 81/82. All the text is complete. There is some folding as seen in the pictures but no loss of text. A bit of fingerstaining appears in the margin. Edges are frayed with some edge-browning as seen in the illustrations. There is some mild soiling, mostly from ingrained dust. One corner has a short tear as illustrated. This leaf is entirely original as found in the collection and has not been restored or mucked with. The leaf measures about 8 x 12 1/2 inches. This leaf has the crown watermark. There are but 232 known copies of the First Folio remaining in the world from a printing of about 750-1000 copies. Many are incomplete. This leaf is therefore very rare and it is unlikely to appear elsewhere in any condition. I have been an antiquarian book dealer since about 1975 and although I have had material (including complete plays) from the Fourth Folio I have never, until now, had any material from the First Folio or the Second Folio. I know of no other leaves from these folios that are in dealer inventories (except the few that some dealers have bought from me). RODRIGUEZ DE SAA Y MENEZES, Juan.
Goldsmith, BMC STC Spanish & Portuguese R-163; Lach & Van Kley III, p. 951-952; Palau 274944. Very rare first and only edition of a first-hand account of the rebellion of the Sinhalese natives, supported by the Dutch, against the Portuguese government of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), concentrating on the years 1623 to 1630, when the author's father was governor of the island. The main text in Spanish, comprising a prologue and sixteen chapters, begins with a general description of the island, its emperors before the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505, the customs of the natives, and the Portuguese government. These are followed by an account of the author's father, Constantino de Saa y Noroña (1586-1630), his taking office as governor and captain general, his principles of government and his reforms, his victories and conquests, and his achievements generally. Finally comes the rebellion itself, led by the King of Kandy, and its immediate aftermath, including the death of De Saa. Although the Dutch came to Ceylon in 1602 and encouraged disgruntled natives to fight against the Portuguese twenty years before De Saa took office, it was largely after his defeat and death in 1630 that the Dutch gained the upper hand in the struggle for control of Ceylon. It was only in 1658, however, that they succeeded in ousting the Portuguese and bringing the island under Dutch control. With the front board partially detached from the bookblock, otherwise in very good condition. An essential primary source on the native rebellion in Ceylon.

SHAKESPEARE, William.
London 'Printed by Isaac Iaggard and Ed. Blount. ' facsimile; E. and J. Wright c. 1807. Folio, (xviii) 993pp., engraved pictorial title-page, slight horizontal crease to title, minor spotting and marks to endpapers and dedication, otherwise very good, contemporary calf, beautifully gilt-panelled to boards, gilt devices to spine panels, all edges gilt, a lovely copy. The original First Folio, of which this is a copy, was the first collected edition of William Shakespeare's plays, collated and published in 1623, seven years after his death. Shakespeare wrote around 37 plays, 36 of which are contained in the First Folio. Most of these plays were performed in the Globe, an open-air playhouse in London built on the south bank of the Thames in 1599. As none of Shakespeare's original manuscripts survive (except, possibly, Sir Thomas More, which Shakespeare is believed to have revised a part of) we only know his work from printed editions. Of the 36 plays in the First Folio, 17 were printed in Shakespeare's lifetime in various good and bad smaller quarto editions, one was printed after his death and 18 had not yet been printed at all. It is this fact that makes the First Folio so important; without it, 18 of Shakespeare's plays, including Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, Macbeth, Julius Caesar and The Tempest, might never have survived. PROCOPIO di Cesarea
In 4to (32x22cm); pp. (5), XXIII, 135, (1), 142, (10).

(SURVEYING)
A finely illustrated manuscript on surveying techniques in Japan. Before the 18th century, surveying techniques were kept in manuscript and passed from master to apprentice. The students "submitted a pledge in their own blood that they would not disclose their knowledge to anyone. This was to protect the members of the trade at a time when patents were unknown. The custom of secrecy must have originated with the development of the techniques and the organization of its craftsmen and helps to account for the dearth of records on surveying in ancient and medieval Japan."-Kazutaka Unno, "Cartography in Japan" in History of Cartography, Vol. II, p. 359. Our manuscript depicts 45 surveying problems and situations, each requiring different techniques: measuring heights, depths, distances, etc. In the preface, we learn that the methods of surveying all come from Caspar Schamberger (1623-1706), a German surgeon active in the East Indies and Dejima in Nagasaki, where he established an influential Dutch school of surgery. He was highly regarded by the Japanese government and treated a number of high-ranking officials while on a special embassy to Edo. The first leaf provides a brief history of the European influence on Japanese surveying, describing the Shimizu school of mathematics. There are a number of surveying problems depicted, involving what are clearly riparian rights, the establishment of property boundaries for taxation purposes, navigation principles, etc., etc. Several surveying instruments are depicted. First few leaves with some marginal worming at foot, but in nice and … [Click Below for Full Description]
